Britain identifies its first case of new mpox variant
  + stars: | 2024-10-30 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Britain has detected its first case of new mpox variant clade Ib, the country's health security agency (UKHSA) said on Wednesday, adding that the risk to the population remained low. Close contacts of the case are being followed up by UKHSA and partner organisations, the UKHSA added. There have been cases of mpox clade Ib reported in Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Sweden, India and Germany, as well as Congo. Mpox is a viral infection that typically causes flu-like symptoms and pus-filled lesions, and while usually mild it can kill. Clade Ib is thought to cause more severe disease than clade II.

The focus on advanced technologies has put the two countries into a different kind of arms race. The US Air Force secretary suggested that AI could be decisive in future warfare. On Tuesday, Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said China has been effectively modernizing the People's Liberation Army, fielding systems with the intent of challenging US forces, especially its high-value combat assets like carriers and satellites. China has built up its Rocket Force, developing capabilities that put US military assets at military bases and airfields across the Indo-Pacific within striking range. The Air Force secretary said that he doesn't think people who say that AI is "going to determine who's the winner in the next battlefield" are "all that far off."

Swiss banking titan UBS on Wednesday posted a large profit beat, after completing its first wave of client migrations following its integration of collapsed domestic rival Credit Suisse. Net profit attributable to shareholders came in at $1.43 billion, compared with a mean forecast of $667.5 million in a LSEG poll of analysts. UBS defends it is not "too big to fail." UBS still faces the lofty tasks of integrating its IT system with that of Credit Suisse, along with migrating clients — with the latter transition set to take around 18 months, Reuters reported earlier this month. The UBS results come after the profit beat of Germany's largest lender Deutsche Bank last Wednesday and join this week's spate of third-quarter reports from European lenders, including from BNP Paribas and Santander.

NEW YORK — Anthony Volpe’s jersey was caked in dirt as he fielded grounders at shortstop before the ninth inning of Game 4 of the World Series. The New York Yankees were on the brink of a victory that would keep their season alive. He launched a go-ahead grand slam in the third inning, giving the Yankees a 5-2 lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers. “Definitely number one.”Yankee Stadium hadn’t erupted like it did Tuesday in 15 years, not since Game 6 of the 2009 World Series. London CNN —At Frieze London this year, three large artworks by the artist Nengi Omuku were hung away from the walls so viewers could walk around them. The other presented strips of sanyan, a thick traditional Nigerian fabric that Omuku uses to replace the usual canvas fabric painters often use as their base. “The fact I’m painting on a vintage surface gives soul to my work,” Omuku said over Zoom two days before the fair opens. AMD's GPU sales are nearing CPU sales, driven by AI data center demand. AMD raised its 2024 GPU sales forecast to over $5 billion, up from $4.5 billion. AdvertisementWhat could also keep this dynamic from becoming permanent is the immaturity of the ecosystem around AMD GPUs. UBS analysts warned that 2025 may be yet another transition year in which AI data centers and GPU sales don't reach maturity — predicting higher GPU sales in 2026 than in 2025. The analysts expect $5 billion in GPU sales this year to reach around $8 billion next year.

The EU and China have reportedly agreed to start talks on the planned imposition of tariffs on Chinese-made EVs. China's commerce ministry said it "does not accept" tariffs imposed by the European Union on Chinese electric vehicles, after the bloc increased tariffs on Chinese EVs to as high as 45.3% on Wednesday. The commerce ministry said "China will continue to take all necessary measures to resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies." China's commerce ministry also highlighted the EU has indicated it will continue to negotiate with China, adding that both sides are conducting a new round of consultations. On Oct. 25, Reuters reported the two sides were looking at possible minimum price commitments from Chinese producers or investments in Europe as an alternative to tariffs.

Harris plays cleanup on Biden 'garbage' comment
  + stars: | 2024-10-30 | by ( Dan Mangan | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday distanced herself from President Joe Biden's controversial comment that appeared to label supporters of former President Donald Trump as "garbage." Harris also said that Biden had "clarified" the comment he made Tuesday. "Just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a 'floating island of garbage,'" Biden said on the call. In this version, it seemed that Biden was saying the "garbage" was Hinchcliffe's demonization of Latinos, not Trump supporters. In 2020, Biden beat Trump in the state by fewer than 81,000 votes, a margin of less than 1.2%.

Chipotle says it's tried to ensure "consistent and generous portions" after customer complaints. The move and unusual price fluctuations for avocados have hit the chain's profitability. "We are committed to ensuring that we give the right portion to every guest that walks into the building." Every year, my mom and I plan a trip anchored by a different food festival. Food festivals reduce the pressure of planning and allow us to immerse ourselves in new places. We've traveled across the country and to various continents, but there's one activity that serves as the glue to our trips — food festivals. By attending food festivals around the world, we're able to experience the local culture in a unique way. As an added bonus, festivals also make our trips easier to plan and always turn into an unforgettable experience.

With bitcoin approaching a major breakout attempt and new all-time highs, it continues to attract all of the attention and rightly so. While it may seem like ether has been out of favor for a considerable length of time, it's not anything different than we've seen before over the years.
