How Miuccia Prada Reinvented Fashion
  + stars: | 2023-10-19 | by ( Nick Haramis | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +111 min
A few seasons earlier, for Miu Miu’s spring 2022 collection, Prada delivered raw-edge chino micro-miniskirts belted below the hip bone. Firstview (8); courtesy of Prada PRADA STILL resides in the Milanese apartment where she and her two older siblings, Marina and Alberto, grew up. In 1993, her days of on-the-ground protest behind her — she’d long stopped handing out flyers at rallies — Prada and Bertelli created Milano Prada Arte, which later became the Fondazione Prada. Styled by Suzanne Koller FOR THE PAST few years, Miuccia Prada hasn’t had to do quite as much all by herself. © TriStar/Everett Collection Bening and Warren Beatty in “Bugsy.” Everett Collection Bening in “American Beauty” (1999).

CNN —There’s a difference between “long” and “epic,” although in movie terms the two frequently get confused. Martin Scorsese delivers the former but not the latter with “Killers of the Flower Moon,” his second consecutive three-and-a-half-hour movie derived from a true story and underwritten by a prestige-hungry streaming service. Notably, “Killers of the Flower Moon” will receive a wide big-screen launch that includes playing on hundreds of Imax screens. Either way, Scorsese has served up a movie that also plunges into a dark history and comes away with less bang for its bucks. “Killers of the Flower Moon” premieres October 20 in US theaters and will later play on Apple TV+.

Hydrogen Demand Is Set to Boom, but Growth Faces Big Hurdles
  + stars: | 2023-10-18 | by ( Yusuf Khan | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +5 min
A new report from consulting firm McKinsey forecasts a fivefold rise in hydrogen demand to 600 million metric tons a year by 2050, if climate change is limited to 1.5 degree Celsius. Using green hydrogen as fuel for steelmaking can cut emissions by up to 95%, according to H2 Green Steel, a Swedish low-carbon steel startup. Higher interest rates have made securing funding for big infrastructure projects more expensive, with fewer willing to put up the cash, according to Franc. Last week, $7 billion of subsidies dedicated to hydrogen projects in the U.S. were announced by the Energy Department. Faster permitting times are needed to bring more hydrogen projects online, as well as the renewable energy to power their electrolyzers, industry experts say.

President Joe Biden weighed in – cautiously – on a high-stakes question of who was responsible for the deadly explosion at a Gaza hospital, telling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that it appears "the other team" was to blame. Israel quickly denied responsibility, saying the lack of structural damage at the hospital means it could not have been an air attack. Israel pointed to video taken by Al Jazeera that it said revealed a "failed rocket launch" by Islamic Jihad militants. Gaza has been awaiting a counterattack by Israel, which is determined to eradicate Hamas. As for the hospital explosion, Kirby said Biden had directed his national security staff "to gather as much information and context as possible so that we can learn more about how this happened."

For the first time in a long time, tech workers are in a funk. This rare combination of generous compensation and a reasonable work-life balance kept tech workers happier than employees in other industries. Economy wide, there were on average 6.6 front-line workers per manager in 2018 and 2019, but post-pandemic, the ratio dropped to 6 to 1. It's possible that as tech companies have grown into more complex organizations, more management layers are necessary. Fundamentally, it's about listening to and elevating the voices of front-line employees.

Multiple airstrikes have been reported around the Rafah Crossing since the war started, including one on Tuesday. Located in Egypt’s north Sinai, the Rafah Crossing is the sole border crossing between Gaza and Egypt. That has left the Rafah Crossing with Egypt as the territory’s only entrypoint to the outside world. Israel then opened the Rafah Crossing, which it controlled until it withdrew from Gaza in 2005. Most of the nation's power lines are above ground because its cheaper to do it that way. But more utilities have been burying power lines in response to bigger and more destructive natural disasters. That fire was started by lightening, not PG&E's power lines, but it is a reminder of the lasting damage that wildfires can cause. The Public Utilities Commission is considering two other plans that would include both burying power lines and using protective coverings. While burying power lines is the most effective way to prevent wildfires, it is not a quick fix.

The strike killed hundreds of people and occurred during Israel's intense 11-day bombing campaign in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said "barbaric terrorists" in Gaza had attacked the hospital, not Israel's military. News of the hospital strike and high death toll prompted condemnation from many countries on the eve of U.S. President Joseph Biden's visit to Israel. Earlier on Tuesday the United Nations said an Israeli strike had hit one of its schools where at least 4,000 people were sheltering. The Israeli military has signalled that the next steps of its campaign against Palestinian militant group Hamas need not be a long anticipated ground incursion. The siege, which human rights groups have criticized for breaking humanitarian law, comes in response to a brutal terrorist attack by Hamas on Oct. 7. The death toll from the conflict so far has risen to at least 1,400 people killed in Israel and more than 2,700 people killed in Gaza. The Israeli government says that Hamas is holding at least 199 hostages kidnapped from Israel. Israel's Gaza evacuation order could amount to a crime of "forcible transfer" in breach of international law, according to a spokesperson for the U.N. human rights office.

DALLAS (AP) — A miniature X-wing Starfighter used in a “Star Wars” film sold for over $3 million during an auction over the weekend of items both collected and created by longtime Hollywood model-maker Greg Jein. The auction house said that everyone from model-makers to collectors and science-fiction fans attended, making the event its best-attended in years. The Red Leader X-wing Starfighter that was used in the 1977 film “Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope" sold for about $3.1 million after a bidding duel between two collectors, the auction house said. Also going for an eye-popping amount was a “Star Wars” Stormtrooper costume that sold for $645,000. Zutavern said his friend had a love of Hollywood history, and a passion for seeking out items for his collection.

Describing that anticipated outcome while keeping open the possibility of future rate increases will be one challenge Powell faces. Another will be discounting speculation about the prospect of rate cuts or changes to other aspects of Fed policy, such as the ongoing reduction of the central bank's balance sheet. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note is just about six-tenths of a percentage point below the Fed's policy rate; when the gap between the two shifts from negative to positive is when monetary policy gets perhaps its truest test. Recent data on balance don't fully back the Fed's view of a gently slowing economy and steadily easing inflation. "Assuming the economy keeps growing ... the Fed will get back to hiking," Blitz said.

Gaza explained: What to know about the enclave

As Israel prepares for a ground offensive into Gaza, here’s what you need to know about the 140 square-mile enclave – one of the most densely-populated territories on Earth. Israel won, but Gaza remained under the control of Egypt and the region saw an influx of Palestinian refugees from Israel. During the conflict, which became known as the Six-Day War, Israel seized Gaza and held it for nearly 40 years until 2005, when it withdrew its troops and settlers. Even before Hamas’ attacks and Israel’s retaliation on Gaza, living conditions in the enclave were dire. More people have been killed in this week’s bombardment of the enclave than during the six-week Israel-Hamas war of 2014.

LOS ANGELES, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Pop singer Taylor Swift ruled movie box offices over the weekend as her concert film transformed darkened theaters into dance floors and hauled in an estimated $126 million-plus around the world. Moviegoers dressed in concert T-shirts and sequins for screenings of "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour." That would surpass the $73 million that Justin Bieber's 2011 release "Never Say Never," the current record holder for a concert film, collected over its entire run. "This is a superstar debut," Jeff Bock, senior box office analyst at Exhibitor Relations Co., said of Swift's film. Global inflation is seen dropping from 6.9% this year to a still-high 5.8% next. Italian central bank governor Ignazio Visco said there was an impression markets were "reevaluating the term premium" as investors become more nervous about holding longer term debt. One debt restructuring deal emerged: Zambia finally agreed a debt rework memorandum of understanding with creditors including China and France. Sri Lanka said on Thursday it reached an agreement with the Export-Import Bank of China covering about $4.2 billion of debt, while talks with other official creditors are stalling. There was much talk ahead of Marrakech on revamping the IMF and World Bank to better reflect the emergence of economies like China and Brazil.

With lifespans longer and families more spread out, it's essential that I think about long-term care. Long-term care insurance comes in many forms at many costs. The days of an unmarried woman taking care of elderly relatives are a thing of the past, which is why long-term care insurance products are more popular. Long-term care insurance goes beyond the standard health care insurance policy. A long-term care insurance policy protects against the risk of having to pay out of pocket for in-home and/or out-of-home care services.

Cloudline: The blimp is back – and this time it’s tiny

CNN —You’d be forgiven for thinking the resurgence of airships and blimps was a load of hot air. South African startup Cloudline has received millions of dollars in investment for its mini blimps. Cloudline first received venture capital backing in 2019, and after years of research and development and prototyping, the company is preparing to launch commercial operations. “The ability of companies like Cloudline to expand is highly subject to the complexity of regulations experienced across the continent,” Chokossa adds. However it looks to fill its airships, Cloudline is hoping it can break through in this revived transport sector.

Tiny but bountiful, Antarctic krill make up one of the planet’s largest biomasses, nourishing everything from fish to marine mammals and seabirds. At Steinberg’s lab, researchers are examining how warming oceans — Antarctic krill need water colder than 4 degrees Celsius (39 Fahrenheit) to survive — are altering krill’s life cycle. However, a leading marine biologist the industry once relied on to burnish its environmental credentials has since denounced krill fishing. She accepted with the hope that she could help mitigate the effects of krill fishing on the Antarctic ecosystem. Today, she believes that krill fishing should be banned.

[1/6] Palestinian rescue worker Ibrahim Hamdan and his colleague wait for an emergency call, amid fear and exhaustion under Israeli air strikes, in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip October 12, 2023. Explosions from air strikes echo every few minutes - killing more than 1,500 people in Gaza so far including hundreds of children, local health authorities say. Lacking enough heavy machinery such as mechanical diggers and bulldozers, rescue workers also rely on shovels and other tools they wield by hand to pull away rubble. On Wednesday, four Palestine Red Crescent emergency medical workers were killed when their ambulances were hit in two different incidents. Israel and Hamas have repeatedly clashed during that time, with air strikes hitting targets in Gaza.
