That year, the stock market was making headlines due to investors' excitement about internet companies. He wanted to bet on the stock market with his Bar Mitzvah money of roughly $12,000. At the time, there was no pattern day trading rule, which meant he didn't need a minimum of $25,000 to day trade. "My best-performing strategy right now is over the weekend because the stock market is closed over the weekend. "There's reason to believe that the pessimism we saw at the start of the year is giving way to a stronger-than-expected market." Murray has increased his allocation to small-cap stocks, which tend to be among the most direct beneficiaries of economic growth. Other rebounding segments in June include the S&P 500 energy sector, which has gained 6% this month and S&P 500 industrials, up 5.7%. Ten of the 11 S&P 500 sectors are firmer for the month to date, compared to only six for the year. Stronger-than-expected jobs growth and robust consumer spending have been among the data points that have bolstered investors' economic outlook.

We won’t know for sure what it will be or where, but we can predict that these extreme weather events are becoming more common. Katharine Hayhoe, a leading climate scientist suggests one of the most important things we can do about climate change: talk about it. My second grader added, “And we can get power from the sun, compost and walk instead of drive!” We haven’t thought about this as a singular “climate change talk,” but rather as part of how we talk — how we try to help them make sense of the world. Investors are hoping that next week's Federal Reserve meeting offers more clarity about the path interest rates could take. Rising interest rates squeeze consumers, while a cut to follow should help boost economic activity. These pricey purchases are often financed, and higher rates mean higher costs. "Even if the sticker price of the thing doesn't change, the interest rate still matters a lot for their monthly budget." The "brakes were hit very hard in 2022," largely due to higher rates on the new-home construction side, he said.

NEW YORK, June 9 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks have defied fears of a recession, a banking crisis and soaring Treasury yields to rise 20% from their October lows - one definition of a bull market. Here are some features of the index's rally, and a look at where stocks might go from here. More recently, however, the market's gains have shown tentative signs of broadening out to other stocks. A 20% gain from bear market lows has in the past heralded further upside for stocks. In four of the last six bear markets, the S&P went on to rise 20% or more in the six months after hitting this milestone.

New data from the Census Bureau reveals construction spending by US manufacturers more than doubled from last year. According to data from the Census Bureau released last week, construction spending by US manufacturers more than doubled over the past year. The IRA has sought to create new jobs in manufacturing, construction, and renewable energy, estimated to create up to 1.5 million jobs by 2030. Construction spending in most areas of the US economy has fallen in contrast, including office, health care, and educational construction. Census Bureau data reveals manufacturing construction spending has escalated from January 2020 until April 2023 in every region except New England and the Mid Atlantic.

Despite hitting an 18-month low of 4.70% in April, analysts do not expect India's inflation to fall to the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) 4% medium-term target in a sustainable manner for some time. India has raised rates by 250 basis points (bps) since May 2022, but surprised analysts in April by keeping them unchanged. India's hold on rates contrasts with recent central bank actions elsewhere. "Our goal is to achieve the inflation target of 4% and keeping inflation within the comfort band of 2-6% is not enough," Das said. Das said that the central bank would remain "nimble" with its liquidity operations amid spikes in overnight rates despite surplus liquidity in the banking system.

"Inflation has clearly subsided, and yet labor market strength has remained intact," wrote BMO Capital Markets chief investment strategist Brian Belski in a recent note. “Moving past the debt ceiling and at least having some economic data that looks ok is actually enough to get some people interested,” said Keith Lerner, co-chief investment officer at Truist Advisory Services. Lerner on Monday shifted his expected S&P 500 range for this year up to 3,800-4,500, from 3,400-4,300 previously, citing improving earnings trends among other factors. NEW YORK, June 6 (Reuters) - Merck & Co (MRK.N) sued the U.S. government on Tuesday, seeking to halt the Medicare drug price negotiation program contained in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which it argues is violates the Fifth and First Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. The Biden administration's drug pricing reform aims to save $25 billion annually by 2031 through price negotiations for Medicare. Merck called the talks with CMS coercive and forces drugmakers to participate in "political Kabuki theater" by pretending negotiations are voluntary. The first ever Medicare drug price reduction process is due to begin in September when CMS identifies its 10 most costly drugs. Merck's top selling drug, cancer immunotherapy Keytruda, could be subject to negotiations as soon as 2028.

If you're among the cohort lacking a retirement account, just about every financial planner would tell you to get started as soon as possible. There are plenty of different ways to invest out there, including workplace retirement accounts, individual retirement accounts, accounts designed for medical expenses and regular old brokerage accounts. Still, there are some general guidelines that financial pros typically prescribe when it comes to where you park your retirement savings. Priority 3: Get triple tax savings with an HSANot every retirement saver can invest using a health savings account. Global drugmaker Merck on Tuesday sued the Biden administration over Medicare's new powers to substantially reduce drug prices for seniors under the Inflation Reduction Act, the opening salvo in the pharmaceutical industry's efforts to weaken the program. In a scathing complaint filed in federal court in Washington D.C., Merck excoriated the negotiation process as a "sham" and "tantamount to extortion." The Inflation Reduction Act, which became law last summer, was a major victory for President Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress, who have long pushed to empower Medicare to combat rising drug prices. The pharmaceutical industry has fiercely opposed the law, arguing it will stifle new drug development. Merck has asked a judge to block HHS from compelling the drugmaker to participate in the program.

"We'll make your life easier and help you set up shop here," he told ProLogium's Chief Executive Vincent Yang. It is one of four such gigafactories Macron hopes will transform the poor, former coal mining area near Belgium into a hub for the EV battery industry, creating jobs and helping to put France at the forefront of Europe's energy transition. "Results don't just fall from the sky," Macron told Reuters in Dunkirk. At the moment, however, France lags well behind Germany when it comes to attracting battery makers. Still, the IRA almost threw ProLogium's investment in France off course, one French presidential adviser told Reuters.

Forever in debt: Why U.S. loans are getting longer

NEW YORK, June 5 (Reuters) - Consumers facing high asset prices and rising interest rates have a few loan options. But if you must go ahead, either face taking on a big monthly payment, or stretching out the loan term to keep the monthly bill down - as many are doing. New car loans lasting 73-84 months (over six years) rose to 34.4% of the market in 2022 from 28.6% in 2018, according to auto information site Edmunds. A few borrowers are going even longer, with less than 1% of new car loans lasting 85 months or more. MAKE SOME HARD DECISIONSIf you must keep pushing out the loan term to afford an asset, that may be a signal to get real.

Fund managers in the latest BofA Global Research survey named shorting the dollar as the market's third "most crowded" trade. The dollar is "in a very messy transition from bull market to a bear market," said Aaron Hurd, senior portfolio manager, currency, at State Street Global Advisors. Hurd expects the dollar to remain buoyant over the very short term, but decline steadily over the next few years. Most investors believe the dollar will likely remain elevated until U.S. data turns decidedly weaker, allowing the Fed to cut rates. "The dollar strength is entirely related to the fact that U.S. data is actually pretty good," said Alvise Marino, a strategist at Credit Suisse.

Hundreds of thousands took distributionsData suggests hundreds of thousands of people took coronavirus-related distributions — and that few have repaid it. Nearly 6% of investors in workplace retirement plans took a CRD in 2020, according to internal administrative data from Vanguard Group. That amounts to about 268,000 people out of 4.7 million retirement investors for whom Vanguard provided administrative services that year. It was one the president deployed once again behind closed doors at the White House. With Memorial Day on the horizon, senior White House officials said protecting veterans’ benefits was a top priority. They also knew it was a sensitive issue for Republicans’ politically, especially as House Republicans parried White House allegations about cuts to veterans’ services. White House officials would engage in conversations where their Republican counterparts would outline a potential resolution on issues. For months, White House officials hoped – and to some degree based on past battles, expected – Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell would engage in finding a resolution.
