On the day before the F.B.I. obtained a search warrant almost two years ago to look for classified materials at former President Donald J. Trump’s private club and residence in Florida, one of the agents on the case sent a reassuring email to his bosses. “The F.B.I. A municipal candidate for the far-right Alternative for Germany party was slashed with a box cutter in the western German city of Mannheim, the authorities said on Wednesday. While the police said that the incident on Tuesday night did not appear to be politically motivated, it came four days after a knife attack on members of an anti-Islam party in the same city, which raised concerns about more violence in the prelude to Sunday’s vote in Germany for the European Parliament. The attack on Tuesday occurred after the candidate, Heinrich Koch, who is running for municipal office in Mannheim, noticed a man “taking down and slashing” Alternative for Germany campaign posters, according to Emil Sänze, a party spokesman in the state of Baden-Württemberg, which includes Mannheim. After Mr. Koch confronted him, the man attacked Mr. Koch with a box cutter, Mr. Sänze said. Mr. Koch was taken to a hospital for stitches on Tuesday night but is expected to make a full recovery, according to Mr. Sänze.

RFK Jr. may have already peaked in the presidential race

CNN —Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is perhaps the biggest X factor remaining in the presidential race. That’s better than any third-party or independent candidate has polled in an individual survey at this stage in the cycle since Ross Perot in 1996. Biden is likely aware that Kennedy voters tend to skew younger – a demographic that traditionally leans Democratic. Perhaps more concerning for the independent candidate is what’s going on under the hood. He’d previously never had a net negative favorable rating in the double digits.

CNN —The United States flew a B-1B bomber over the Korean Peninsula on Wednesday in the first live munitions drop over South Korea in seven years as part of joint air exercises between the two countries, the US and South Korea said Wednesday. As part of the exercise, the US B-1B Lancer and two South Korean F-15K Eagles dropped precision 500-pound JDAMs (joint direct attack munitions), simultaneously striking multiple targets, the US said. The American bomber then flew with advanced South Korean F-35A and KF-16 fighter jets, as well as US fighters and tankers. “This training showcases the incredible capabilities of our combined forces to simultaneously strike multiple targets in a contested environment,” said Lt. Gen. David Iverson, US Force Korea deputy commander and Seventh Air Force commander. The joint training on Wednesday marked the first time the B-1B has conducted “a live munitions drop” on the Korean Peninsula since 2017 to demonstrate its capability to “precisely strike deep target,” South Korea’s defense ministry said.

The pilots of the Delta flight aborted their takeoff run following a frantic call from the air traffic controller in the tower. The two planes came within 1,400 feet of colliding, NTSB data released earlier this year found. It also follows two recent runway incursions at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, including one being investigated by the NTSB. Known as ASDE-X, the NTSB says the system helped stop the impending collision at JFK, but it is deployed at only 35 major airports in the United States. Such a recording would have provided key details about what happened, the NTSB said.

Federal regulators have reached a deal that allows them to proceed with antitrust investigations into the dominant roles that Microsoft, OpenAI and Nvidia play in the artificial intelligence industry, in the strongest sign of how regulatory scrutiny into the powerful technology has escalated. Under the arrangement, the Justice Department will take the lead in investigating whether the behavior of Nvidia, the biggest maker of A.I. will play the lead role in examining the conduct of OpenAI, which makes the ChatGPT chatbot, and Microsoft, which has invested $13 billion in OpenAI and made deals with other A.I. At about 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, a federal prosecutor, Derek Hines, brandished the headliner in question — Mr. Biden’s notorious laptop, a silver Apple MacBook Pro encased in a plastic cover. He waggled it about with his left hand while reminding a government witness, Erika Jensen, an F.B.I. special agent, of all the data that had been seized during the Department of Justice’s investigation of Mr. Biden. The jurors and courtroom spectators gazed at government Exhibit 16 as if expecting sparks to fly from it. Three seconds later, Mr. Hines returned the laptop to the prosecutors’ table, soon to be buried under a heap of other government evidence.

The unanimous vote by the 16 advisers recommends a formula aimed at combating the variant JN.1, which dominated infections in the United States in February, or a version of it. In recent weeks, JN.1 has been overtaken by descendants known as KP.2 and KP.3. is expected to formally recommend a variant target for vaccine makers for the next round of shots in the late summer or early fall. Any decision involves some educated guesswork, given that any new vaccine formula won’t be available until months after a variant becomes dominant. “It’s becoming clear that the ideal timing for a vaccine composition decision remains elusive,” said Jerry Weir, an official with the F.D.A.’s vaccine division.

F.D.A. Panel Weighs MDMA Therapy and Its Risks

The Food and Drug Administration is weighing whether to approve the use of MDMA, also known as Ecstasy, for treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. An independent advisory panel of experts will review studies on Tuesday and is expected to vote on whether the treatment would be effective and whether its benefits outweigh the risks. The panel will hear from Lykos Therapeutics, which has submitted evidence from clinical trials in an effort to obtain agency approval to sell the drug legally to treat people with a combination of MDMA and talk therapy. Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is a synthetic psychoactive drug first developed by Merck in 1912. After being resynthesized in the mid-1970s by Alexander Shulgin, a psychedelic chemist in the Bay Area, MDMA gained popularity among therapists.

PTSD Treatments Are Falling Short for Many Patients

They withdraw — often reluctant to talk about what they’ve experienced and unable to trust others or themselves. The treatments for PTSD — including several forms of psychotherapy and medication — are effective for many patients, but they don’t work for everyone. Sometimes, they can be so distressing that patients stop the treatment before it’s complete. On Friday the Food and Drug Administration declined to approve what would have been the first new treatment for PTSD in decades, a therapy that combined the psychoactive drug MDMA with talk therapy. approve the treatment, citing concerns about safety and issues in clinical trials.

Ron Edmonds, a photographer for The Associated Press who won a Pulitzer Prize for a dramatic series of pictures of the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan and the takedown of the gunman outside a Washington hotel in 1981, died on Friday in Falls Church, Va. His wife, Grace Feliciano Edmonds, said he died in a hospital from pneumonia linked to a bacterial infection. It was only Mr. Edmonds’s second day on the White House beat when he was assigned to cover a speech by President Reagan to an A.F.L.-C.I.O. group at the Washington Hilton on March 30, 1981. After rushing to leave the hotel ahead of the president, Mr. Edmonds positioned himself on the other side of the presidential limousine, expecting that Reagan would do little more than wave to onlookers before returning to the White House.

An independent advisory panel of the Food and Drug Administration rejected the use of MDMA-assisted therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder on Tuesday, highlighting the unparalleled regulatory challenges of a novel therapy using the drug commonly known as Ecstasy. Before the vote, members of the panel raised concerns about the designs of the two studies submitted by the drug’s sponsor, Lykos Therapeutics. The panel voted 9-2 on whether the MDMA-assisted therapy was effective, and voted 10-1 on whether the proposed treatment’s benefits outweighed its risks. Other panelists expressed concerns over the drug’s potential cardiovascular effects, and possible bias among the therapists and facilitators who guided the sessions and may have positively influenced patient outcomes. A case of misconduct involving a patient and therapist in the study also weighed on some panelists’ minds.

President Biden’s campaign has been clear: He will debate former President Donald J. Trump only one-on-one. That hasn’t stopped Robert F. Kennedy Jr. from trying. As the deadline to qualify for the June 27 debate draws closer, Mr. Kennedy, who is running for president as an independent, has said he’s confident he can still meet host CNN’s requirements, while ramping up accusations that the news organization rigged the process. But Mr. Kennedy’s rivals do have a mutual interest in boxing him out, as The New York Times previously reported. Mr. Kennedy is drawing support away from both Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump, and both campaigns are concerned about the potential for him to swing the election in key battleground states.

Ford EV and hybrid sales surge 65% in May

DETROIT – Ford Motor's U.S. new vehicle sales rose 11.2% last month compared with May of last year, boosted by strong sales growth for all-electric and hybrid models. The Detroit automaker on Tuesday reported roughly 65% increases in sales of both hybrid and all-electric vehicles. The boost to EV sales is a conundrum for investors. The spike in hybrid sales is part of Ford's plan to double down on the technology. Ford reported total year-to-date U.S. sales through May of 877,685 units, up 5.6% compared with the same time period in 2023.
