A midsummer City Council meeting in New York can often be a sleepy event, but the gathering on Thursday was a clear exception. Everyone, after all, was still talking about the Bite. A day earlier, Susan Zhuang, a first-year Democratic councilwoman from Brooklyn who ran on a law-and-order message, was charged with assault after the police said she had bitten an officer at a protest over a proposed homeless shelter. So, as the Council convened its so-called stated meeting, the formal gathering during which bills are introduced or passed, Ms. Zhuang drew much of the attention — and she wasn’t even there. She held her own news conference near the scene of her alleged crime in Brooklyn, although a police photo of the bloody circular gash on the officer’s arm put Ms. Zhuang more in the position of explaining the confrontation than denying it.

J. Michael Cline, the co-founder of Fandango, an online ticketing company that changed how Americans went to the movies, died this week after falling from the twentieth floor of a Manhattan hotel, according to the police. New York City police officers, who responded to a 911 call at the Kimberly Hotel on Tuesday, “found an unconscious and unresponsive male with injuries indicative of a fall from an elevated position,” a spokesman for the police said in a statement. The medical examiner’s office ruled the death a suicide. Mr. Cline, who was 64, co-founded Fandango in 2000 and left the company in 2011, according to his LinkedIn profile. The company — familiar to many from its splashy logo, an orange “F” in the shape of a ticket stub — was later acquired by Comcast and is currently owned by NBCUniversal and Warner Bros. For years, the company dominated movie-ticket sales, handling ticketing for several major theater chains and making money by charging a processing fee for online ticket sales and by selling advertising on its site.

In the aftermath of Katrina, the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act of 2006 was passed. However, development and implementation of pet evacuation and sheltering plans during disasters remains widely insufficient, if it is even addressed at all. At least 15 states do not have any provisions for the evacuation, rescue and recovery of pets during disasters, according to Michigan State University’s Animal Law and History Web Center. More commonly, pet owners will sneak back into active evacuation sites to rescue their pets, risking injury and even death. Allowing pet owners to evacuate their animals may prevent significant psychological distress and can strengthen the emotional resiliency of evacuees.

An assumable mortgage allows qualifying buyers to acquire the interest rate, current principal balance, and other conditions of a seller's existing loan. In June, we bought it for $400,000, assuming the seller's mortgage at a 2.75% interest rate with 26 years left on a 30-year fixed-rate loan. The assumable mortgage process was actually straightforwardBefore starting the assumption, we thought it would be very difficult. It seemed that they were trying to steer us away from the assumable mortgage and toward getting a new one. They even offered us a lower interest rate below the current rate, but it was still significantly higher than what I was getting through this assumable process.

But one narrative has quickly taken hold in parts of the right-wing media ecosystem: The security failure was the result of workforce diversity initiatives and women working as Secret Service agents. United States Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle speaks during a press conference at the Secret Service's Chicago Field Office on June 4 2024 in Chicago, Illinois, ahead of the 2024 Democratic and Republican National Conventions. A U.S. Secret Service official on Wednesday said that a local Pennsylvania police SWAT team was actually in another building than the one whose roof was used by a would-be assassin to shoot at former President Donald Trump on Saturday. The Secret Service official's new account contradicts a prior claim by Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle that the 20-year-old gunman, Thomas Crooks, was on top of the building containing the SWAT team near Trump's campaign rally in the town of Butler. Also Wednesday, a source familiar with the shooting probe told NBC that local police saw Crooks with a range finder, which is used to measure shooting distances, and that they had informed the Secret Service they were looking for Crooks with that device before Trump took the stage at the rally. The new disclosures come a day after news that the Secret Service before Saturday's shooting boosted security for Trump when it was told of a plot to kill him by Iran's government.
