In the weeks around early July, New York residents David and Susan Schwartz visited three Costco stores, known as warehouses, on the outskirts of Shanghai and the neighboring city of Suzhou. China's retail sales slowed to a 2.5% year-on-year increase in July, adding to growing uncertainty about the country's future growth. And so what is considered center and moderate now is dramatically different than what it was five years ago. We started this conversation talking about how you entered politics at a particular moment, and not a good one. There have been times where this work has been extremely challenging, and I didn’t know if I would survive in this position. And so I’m motivated by an extraordinary sense of responsibility, not just for representation, but to deliver on policy. At 33 years old, first winning my election at 28 — this has taken a large degree of learning.

That's the equivalent of each household moving once every 23 years, an increase of six years from 2021, the monthly report found. Demand for homes in the last four weeks is down 34% compared to the average of the last five years, as higher mortgage rates and cost-of-living pressures weigh on the market, Zoopla said. While house prices have seen a small uptick, sales numbers have been hit hardest by higher borrowing costs, Richard Donnell, executive director at Zoopla said in a press release. "Cash buyers are more immune and on track to account for more than one in three sales in 2023," Donnell said. Mortgage rates have started to come down but remain high, with the average rate for a 2-year fixed mortgage for a 95% loan at 6.7% for the week of Aug. 21, online real estate company Rightmove said last week.

New York CNN —3M has agreed to pay $6 billion to resolve roughly 300,000 lawsuits alleging that the manufacturing company supplied faulty combat earplugs to the military that resulted in significant injuries, such as hearing loss. 3M is prepared to continue to defend itself in the litigation if certain agreed terms of the settlement agreement are not fulfilled,” the company said. 3MThe earplugs were used by the US military in training and combat from 2003 to 2015. REUTERS/Toby Melville/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Aug 30 (Reuters) - The number of house purchases in Britain this year is on course to drop by 21% to its lowest since 2012 as a result of rising borrowing costs, property website Zoopla forecast on Wednesday. "While UK house prices are 0.1% higher over the year, it is the number of sales that have been hit hardest by higher borrowing costs, especially amongst mortgage-reliant buyers," Zoopla's executive director, Richard Donnell, said. Zoopla forecast that house purchases funded by mortgages would drop 28% this year, while cash buyers would fall just 1% and account for more than a third of sales. The most recent official data showed that there were 22% fewer house purchases in the three months to the end of June than a year earlier. German consumer morale to fall in September -GfK

REUTERS/Michael Dalder Acquire Licensing RightsBERLIN, Aug 29 (Reuters) - German consumer sentiment is expected to fall in September, due to declining income expectations and propensity to buy, a GfK institute survey showed on Tuesday. "The chances that consumer sentiment can sustainably recover before the end of this year are dwindling more and more," said GfK consumer expert Ralf Buerkl. Persistently high inflation rates are hindering any improvement in consumer sentiment, said Buerkl. The consumer climate indicator forecasts the development of real private consumption in the following month. According to GfK, a one-point change in the indicator corresponds to a year-on-year change of 0.1% in private consumption.

One Fair Wage, the group leading the movement, wants businesses to be required to pay employees the state’s minimum wage, plus tips. And, similar to the crisis that ultimately toppled Lehman Brothers in 2008, much of China's troubles are rooted in its property sector. New York CNN —Central bank officials from across the world have descended upon Jackson Hole, Wyoming this week to discuss policy decisions that will shape the economy for years to come. That’s because Jackson Hole is the most economically unequal place in the United States, according to the Economic Policy Institute. What’s happening: The snow kissed peaks and verdant valleys of Jackson Hole, Wyoming — where Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is due to give a highly anticipated speech on Friday — aren’t just awe-inspiring. Among the top 1% in Teton County (where Jackson Hole is located), the average annual income is a jaw-dropping $22.5 million. The extreme wealth disparity in Jackson Hole is a perfect example of that dichotomy.

Home affordability is the worst it has been since 1984

Washington, DC CNN —Buying a house requires a much bigger slice of people’s income now — making this the most unaffordable housing market since 1984, by one measure. The number of cost-burdened renters increased by 1.2 million, to a record 21.6 million households, between 2019 and 2021. In all, 40.6 million households were housing-cost burdened in 2021, including 20.3 million who were severely burdened. Affordability picture remains grim this yearHopeful house hunters continued to face challenging affordability conditions in July as rising mortgage rates and historically low housing inventory pushed prices higher, said Edward Seiler, the Mortgage Bankers Association’s associate vice president for housing economics. “Unfortunately, given today’s lack of inventory and affordability levels, it may take years before home affordability returns to more ‘normal’ levels,” he said.

Moody's says that consumer savings rates are rising after bottoming out in June 2022. "We still see it as a normalization, not a deterioration story when we talk about consumer credit.'' But consumer loan delinquency rates are at 2019 levels, and below any level ever seen before 2014, according to Federal Reserve data. Overall, the Bureau of Economic Analysis says consumer spending on new vehicles rose $40 billion to $642.4 billion in the first half of the year, with most gains coming in the second quarter.

REUTERS/Toby Melville/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Asking prices for homes in Britain fell sharply this month as rising mortgage costs caused sellers to lower their expectations of what they can get for their properties, an industry survey showed on Monday. Website Rightmove said average asking prices for homes dropped by 1.9%, the biggest monthly fall for August since 2018 and twice as steep as the usual summertime fall. Mortgage lenders Nationwide and Halifax both previously reported falls in selling prices in July. Rightmove's survey also showed the number of home sales was down 15% compared with 2019, before the pandemic. Average asking prices for homes were 2% below their peak in May but, reflecting the surge in demand during the pandemic, remained 19% higher than in August 2019, Rightmove said.

Bill Perkins wants to spend every penny before he dies, he explains in his book "Die With Zero." He thinks most people are saving too much for retirement, given that a lot of it goes unused. Instead of leaving a large inheritance, he'd rather use his money on experiences, helping his children while they're starting out, and spending the money on his needs. While some people did use up their money, many retirees actually see their net worth increase with time. "Retirees with less than $200,000 saved up for retirement ... had spent down only one quarter of their assets 18 years after retirement."

US consumers have spent all of their excess savings from the pandemic, according to JPMorgan. The bank highlighted the softening of the consumer as one reason why stocks are poised to continue their decline. In a Thursday note, he said consumers have spent down the entirety of their excess savings from the pandemic, which at one point totaled more than $2 trillion. A softening consumer is just one reason why he is preaching continued caution towards the stock market amid its 5% decline, according to the note. Another headwind for the stock market is the fact that rich valuations make buybacks less attractive for companies when they're funded by debt, he added.
