Many U.K. pensions are rushing to raise cash to satisfy collateral calls triggered by rapid moves in usually staid government bonds. Adding to the urgency: the Bank of England’s plans to end its emergency bond-buying this Friday, after which many fear volatility could surge again.

Many households are facing soaring energy bills this winter even with price caps or subsidies. Some people are installing solar panels on their roofs to help bring down costs. The solar panels generate energy even when it is cloudy or raining, he said, and it will be his first winter using them. John Reader, 74, from Cornwall, says it cost close to £7,000 ($7,800) to get 16 solar panels installed on his house. The amount of electricity the solar panels produce varies from between seven to more than 30, depending on how sunny it is.

"We are really a government in waiting and we have a chance to set out our ideas for the country. Labour is positioning itself as the party of fiscal responsibility and say it stands for "sound money". Almost half of voters say that Labour has not produced a clear set of policy ideas, according to polling from Savanta ComRes. In the most recent poll, Labour now has a six-point lead. But Curtis said the Conservatives still lead on the crucial question about who is best placed to make voters and the country wealthier.
The dockworkers at Felixstowe, the largest port in the UK, have started an eight-day strike in protest over their wages and inflation, overlapping with an ongoing strike at Port of Liverpool. Together, the two port strikes threaten imports and exports across industries —much bound for the U.S. — during a critical ramp up in the holiday shipping season. The combined value of weekly trade that moves out of the ports of Felixstowe and Liverpool, according to MDS Transmodal, is nearly $7 billion. The Port said in a statement Tuesday that it was "very disappointed that Unite has announced this further strike action. "This time, it's more likely that supply chains will be under pressure and trade could be affected by the overlapping Liverpool strike," warned Brazil.

"(It) creates a sense of fear inside the civil service at senior level which will prevent them for giving the honest advice to ministers that they need to hear," he told Reuters. Mark Serwotka, general secretary of the Public and Commercial Services Union, the largest trade union representing British civil servants, agreed. "I think the whole attitude towards civil servants from the political side is worsening," said one former civil servant on condition of anonymity. Former civil servants such as Kerslake fear for its future. "I call it the 'how high' phase, which is ministers saying jump and civil servants say how high," Kerslake said.

Britain's Labour Party leader Keir Starmer speaks during the tribute to Britain's Queen Elizabeth at Britain's Labour Party's annual conference in Liverpool, Britain, September 25, 2022. Starmer, who has led Britain's main opposition party for the past two years, said he would reintroduce the top rate of income tax to 45% after the government abolished the rate in a mini-budget. "I would reverse the decision they made," Labour leader Starmer said. However, Starmer said a Labour government would not reverse the government's decision to cut the basic rate of income tax to 19% from 20%, saying that tax cut would benefit working people. Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, earlier said Labour should oppose all the tax moves outlined by the new government.

REUTERS/Peter Nicholls/File PhotoLIVERPOOL, England, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Britain's Labour Party will unveil on Monday its plans to set up a national wealth fund to invest in green projects which will benefit the public, part of the opposition party's answer to the Conservative government's tax-cutting approach. The so-called mini-budget has opened up a divide between Prime Minister Liz Truss's Conservatives and the Labour Party of Keir Starmer, who wants to use the years before an expected election in 2024 to prove his team is ready for power. "That is a real plan for growth," she will say, taking aim at the "Growth Plan" presented by finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng on Friday, when Labour accused him of prioritising the wealthy over working people struggling with rising prices by turning to the discredited theory of "trickle-down economics". Ed Miliband, Labour's climate policy chief, said Labour's plans would return jobs to Britain.
