By Sergio GoncalvesLISBON (Reuters) - Portugal's Attorney General Lucilia Gago on Thursday rejected criticism from the ruling Socialist Party (PS) that she was responsible for Prime Minister Antonio Costa's resignation because of her probe into alleged irregularities in his administration. Costa stepped down on Nov. 7 over an investigation into alleged illegalities in his government's handling of lithium and hydrogen projects. Prosecutors said Costa was also the target of a related probe, but he has denied wrongdoing. Santos Silva said some in the judicial system viewed political activity as "by nature suspicious and tend to criminalize political and governmental action." He demanded the justice system decide Costa's case before the snap election.

The fate of OpenAI hangs in the balance

That has only reinforced the impression that OpenAI’s boardroom drama could take an unexpected turn at any moment. First came the board’s sudden promotion of OpenAI’s chief technology officer, Mira Murati, as Altman’s replacement on Friday — made in the same breath as Altman’s firing. Whether Altman is working for Microsoft or OpenAI won’t change the ultimate result, Nadella argued to Swisher, which is that Microsoft benefits from his work. Much is still unclear about the board’s exact reasons for firing Altman. OpenAI’s newest interim CEO, Emmett Shear, has denied that the firing was due to any “specific” disagreement on AI safety.

The day after Thanksgiving historically has marked the start of the holiday shopping rush. This matters because the November-December gift-buying months combined can account for about 20%, or a sizable chunk, of retailers’ sales for the full year. Retailers this year trotted out early Black Friday-like deals weeks ahead of the annual day-after-Thanksgiving shopping bonanza. “It is a lengthier shopping season because retailers were rolling out early Black Friday deals as early as October. Walmart’s first round of early Black Friday deals included a 50-inch TV house brand for $148.

November 21 - The Florida Panthers, who will go for their third straight win when they play host to the Boston Bruins Wednesday night, are getting an unexpected contribution from defenseman Niko Mikkola. July 1, the Panthers signed Mikkola to a three-year, $7.8 million contract. Indeed, in just 18 games this season, Mikkola - who made his NHL debut in January 2020 - has already matched his career high with three goals. The Bruins led that series 3-1 before Florida won the next two and then took Game 7 in overtime. faulted agents in 2019 for misusing their guns in two separate shootings, each an exceedingly rare internal finding of violations of its lethal force policy, according to documents obtained by The New York Times. The first involved an agent in Arkansas who shot at — but missed — a suspect who was driving away to flee arrest. The other involved an agent in California who fatally shot a family dog that he said bit him during a “family dispute” while he was off duty; he got a five-day suspension. While neither shooting, both of which took place in 2017, was a major imbroglio, their disclosure is notable. Under its deadly force policy, agents are only permitted to fire their guns, outside of practice ranges, if they reasonably believe that the target poses an imminent danger of death or serious physical injury to someone.

He started with an "index-first strategy," he told Insider, and invested up to 80% of his earnings into low-cost index funds in the early 2010s. While index funds are ultimately what catapulted him to financial independence in the first place, he wouldn't necessarily go that route if he had to start from scratch today. "I'm still very pro low-cost index funds for almost everyone," he said. Lower returns mean index funds won't grow as much, and investors potentially have to save and contribute more to hit their goals.
