UK councils call for ban on disposable vapes by 2024
  + stars: | 2023-07-15 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
LONDON, July 15 (Reuters) - Councils in England and Wales have called on the UK government to ban the sale of single use vapes by 2024 on both environmental and health grounds. The LGA said 1.3 million disposable vapes were thrown away every week. The LGA said councils were also concerned about the impact vaping was having upon children and young people. "Disposable vapes are fundamentally flawed in their design and inherently unsustainable products, meaning an outright ban will prove more effective than attempts to recycle more vapes," David Fothergill, Chairman of the LGA's Community Wellbeing Board, said. The UK Vaping Industry Association defended disposable vapes.

After all the hard work she put in to beat six rivals, including four Grand Slam champions, Jabeur had stood on the cusp of becoming the first Arab and first African woman to win a Grand Slam title. Luckily four-time major winner Kim Clijsters, who had lost her first four Grand Slam finals, was waiting in the wings to hug the distraught 28-year-old and offer her hope that her time will come. "We were crying together at the locker room," Jabeur told reporters. "Definitely this match, last year's match, the final of the U.S. Open, will teach me how to win these finals. Hopefully I will be like the others that failed a couple of times to do it and it (the win) will come after.

The 24-year-old left-hander, who a year ago needed wrist surgery, proved too steady for the error-strewn Jabeur who ended up as runner-up as she did in 2022. "Today is going to be a tough day for me but I'm not going to give up and I am going to come back stronger. "It's been a tough journey but I promise I will come back and one day win this tournament." The unassuming Vondrousova had managed to win only one match in her previous four visits to Wimbledon and last year came with her wrist in a plaster cast to support a friend and go shopping. It looked as though Jabeur was getting on top as she won three games in a row, but Vondrousova never panicked.

Marketa Vondrousova came to the All England Club a year ago unable to play tennis at all. Vondrousova became the first unseeded woman to win Wimbledon on Saturday, coming back in each set for a 6-4, 6-4 victory over 2022 runner-up Ons Jabeur in the final. Following the match, King greeted Vondrousova with a hug and told her: "First unseeded ever. 6 Jabeur, Vondrousova kept falling slightly behind. Another miscue gave Vondrousova a break point, and Jabeur gifted that with yet another shot into the net.

Instead, a distraught Jabeur was left with tears streaming down her face as her Wimbledon dream was wrecked in the final for the second year running with a 6-4 6-4 drubbing. I am going to have a beer as it's been an exhausting two weeks," said Vondrousova. I am going to look ugly for those photos," the 28-year-old Jabeur told the crowd through tears. It's been a tough journey but I promise I will come back and one day win this tournament." Jabeur knows she could have won the first set 6-0, having had game points in each of the opening six games.

London CNN —A rising number of British stores are using a facial recognition system powered by artificial intelligence to identify repeat shoplifters in what one human rights group has called the spread of “airport-style security” on the high street. Human rights groups say this type of technology flouts people’s right to privacy and often makes mistakes. Facewatch also retains shoppers’ data for only two weeks — half the amount of time a regular “CCTV” security camera in the UK typically stores footage. But Gordon is confident Facewatch’s system doesn’t have any bias and stresses that it is supported by human staff who’ve been trained in facial recognition. Last month, the European Parliament agreed to ban the use of real-time, AI-powered facial recognition technology in public spaces.

UK-filmed TV shows could go ahead despite SAG strike
  + stars: | 2023-07-14 | by ( Amy Woodyatt | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
London CNN —As a host of Hollywood actors join film and TV writers in a strike against major studios and streaming services, filming and production of some popular shows – including “House of the Dragon” and “Industry” – could continue, due to UK strike laws. A source with knowledge of the productions confirmed to CNN that both are Equity contract shows. Actors are calling for increased pay as well as progress on residuals paid for when films or shows are shown again, particularly on streaming services. They join 11,000 members of the Writers Guild of America, who have been on strike for two months. Production of many movies and television shows has already been shut down by the current writers’ strike, and the actors’ strike threatens to bring most remaining productions to a halt, other than on some independent films not associated with studios.

This counters a claim spreading online that misinterprets public data to suggest it shows the vaccines did not prevent deaths. The data shows there were 22,361 COVID deaths in England and Wales in 2022 where the individuals were vaccinated three times. This would be 80%, not 92%, of all COVID deaths for 2022, she said. The 92% pertains to COVID deaths of anyone who ever received a vaccine dose, the spokeswoman added. Moreover, the online claim’s wider suggestion of vaccine ineffectiveness is a misrepresentation of COVID deaths data, she said.

CNN —Scientists have identified the geological site that they say best reflects a proposed new epoch called the Anthropocene — a major step toward changing the official timeline of Earth’s history. “We’ve moved into this new Earth state and that should be defined by a new geological epoch,” Waters added. On Tuesday, the scientists announced the geological site — Crawford Lake in Ontario, Canada — that best captures the geological impact of the Anthropocene, according to their research. Annual sediment samples from the Crawford Lake site have revealed geochemical traces of nuclear bomb testing, researchers have confirmed. The alpha spectrometry output shown on the screen indicates the presence of plutonium in a Crawford Lake drill core sample.

LONDON, July 10 (Reuters) - Thames Water has become the poster child for a British water industry under fire for its poor environmental record and financial mismanagement. After a period as a listed company, Thames Water was acquired by German utility RWE (RWEG.DE) in 2001. Thames Water said on Monday they would provide 750 million pounds, and added it had strong liquidity of 4.4 billion pounds. FINANCESNearly 60% of Thames Water's debt is index-linked, according to ratings agency Standard & Poor's, saddling it with higher repayments as inflation soars. Thames Water was fined 3.3 million pounds last week, while Southern Water was fined 90 million pounds in 2021.

Megan Rapinoe began her long goodbye with the equivalent of a homecoming. In the decade and a half since she became a professional soccer player, Rapinoe’s career has taken her to soccer clubs on two continents, to Olympic Games on three and, soon, to a fourth World Cup. A version of this story appeared in the July 7 edition of CNN’s Royal News, a weekly dispatch bringing you the inside track on Britain’s royal family. Research in 2011 by Visit Britain found that around 60% of tourists to the UK are likely to visit places associated with the royal family, according to Ross Bennett-Cook, a visiting lecturer at the School of Architecture and Cities at London’s University of Westminster. While there is no more recent data on royal sites specifically, in 2022 Visit Britain found that history and heritage were the biggest pull factors for tourists. UK’s leaky water model faces a growing storm

The fallout raises two big questions: whether the regulatory regime works, and whether Britain’s water companies should still be privately owned. Average UK water bills are 448 pounds in the current year, versus 409 pounds in Scotland. One option would be to squeeze water companies – cutting allowed prices, and imposing bigger penalties on those that allow leaks. For the sector as a whole, Ofwat assumes equity comprises 45% of water companies’ 94 billion pound RCV, or 42 billion pounds.
