I'm a Gen Z employee at a large company and I am a little over a year into my first full-time, professional job after college. Over the past few months, two members of my team have left the company and they're not being replaced. In the current market, I feel like my team could be on the chopping block if my company conducts lay-offs. On the other hand, because I love my team and the work I do, I want to stay and try to make it better. On the other hand, though, it never hurts to start passively looking for a new job while you remain employed.
It's not just millennials and Gen Z who are quitting above pre-pandemic levels. For some, it could be driven by a midlife crisis, in which extreme job stress peaks at age 45. For some, it could all come down to a midlife crisis. Record job openings, financial flexibility, and even a midlife crisis have nudged others to explore new opportunities. While these ages are often peak earnings years, it may not translate to job satisfaction — leading many to explore other job opportunities.

watch nowWhy so many young adults live with mom and dadOverall, multigenerational living is on the rise and has been for years. In 2020, the share of those living with their parents — often referred to as "boomerang kids" — temporarily spiked to a historic high. Now, 25% of young adults live in a multigenerational household, up from just 9% five decades ago. A smaller share live in their own home and have a parent or other older relative stay with them. The percentage of young adults living with parents or grandparents is even greater among men and those without a college degree.
With that question, The Washington Post's technology columnist, Taylor Lorenz, kicked off a recent Aspen Institute panel entitled "Can Gen Z Trust Their Elders?" Across the board, members of Gen Z are less inclined to trust major institutions than their elders are. Add all these factors up, and Gen Z is looking more and more like it will become permanently mistrustful. Why doesn't Gen Z trust anyone? According to a report by Edelman, seven in 10 members of Gen Z say "they will fact-check" any claim made by a business or advertiser.
The difference: climate change, our dunderheaded anti-terraforming of Earth. Climate change has been going on for a century and a half. Then that derecho — souped up by an atmosphere pumped full of heat energy, thanks to climate change — swept across South Dakota. In the US, only young people and those who identify as Democrats think dealing with climate change should be a top priority, according to surveys from Pew Research. About half of Americans think humans are only partially responsible for climate change, or not responsible at all.
Most members of "the sandwich generation" are Gen Xers, per a new Pew report. Sandwiched adults have a parent age 65 or older and either a young child or an adult child they've helped financially. Gen X, who turn ages 42 to 57 this year, make up the majority of this demographic. Gen X caregivers are typically employed, with most saying caregiving has had at least one impact on their work. That flips for those in their 50s, most of whom have an adult child they've helped financially.
The upshot: Today's working parents are under enormous pressure, and their stress has quickly gone from leaking into their professional life to crashing through the floodgates. It's up to employers, experts say, to help working parents manage their priorities and offer flexibility to face this daunting reality. Recognizing the pressures that exist for working parents right now is a good starting point. Importantly, she said, working parents need to be self-compassionate. "What our children need from us changes, and the roles we need to play for them change," she said.
The share of people in the US living in multigenerational households has gone up compared to decades prior. Money is the biggest reason to live in a multigenerational household, a Pew survey found. In the survey, 67% reported "financial issues" as either a major or minor reason they live in a multigenerational household. For many young adults, living with parents or grandparents can be a financial lifesaver. Twenty-nine percent of lower-income US adult respondents living in multigenerational households said this has helped them a lot with their own finances.
Insider spoke with specialist sustainability recruiters to find out how to land a role. "There's just been this huge explosion in roles, and every single company is looking for more people," Katie Pereira, the sustainability director at recruitment agency Allen & York, said. Sustainability manager was one of the fastest-growing jobs across Europe and the seventh-fastest-growing job in the UK, according to data from LinkedIn published earlier this year. "The demand for sustainability professionals has really jumped," Andrew Murray, a former senior environment manager at Vodafone, said. While companies often look for a degree, Allen told Insider that some businesses were "starting to remove the need for higher-education qualifications."
He said inflation is measured using a "market basket" of goods and services. The CPI can't fully explain inflation's rise — some price increases go to corporate profits, he says. Our own experience as consumers informs us that prices on various goods and services are rising, and the inflation rate, derived from the CPI, confirms that our experience is true. But what the CPI can't explain — at least, not fully — is how and why inflation is rising. The United Kingdom, for example, reported a 5.4% inflation rate in December.
Facebook will experience its slowest growth ever in 2021 at just 0.8%. In 2021, the number of monthly Facebook users in the US will increase by less than 1% year over year, the platform's lowest annual growth rate to date. In 2021, the number of monthly Facebook users in the US will increase by less than 1% YoY. While the platform will gain 19.4 million users ages 25 and older between 2019 and 2025, it will lose 4.1 million users ages 12 to 24 during that time frame. Its sister property Instagram ranks second with 118.9 million monthly users expected this year, followed by Pinterest with 91.1 million.

Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, 52% of young adults are living with their parents, according to a new analysis by Pew Research center. The number is now the highest on record, according to Pew, surpassing the 48% peak recorded during the Great Depression. Even prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, a large portion of 18- to 29-year-olds were living with a parent. A 2016 report said millennial men were more likely to live with a mom or dad than with a significant other. But the coronavirus pandemic has worsened the economic outlook for this generation struggling financially, pushing 2.6 million more young people to move back home.

In a survey from Kiplinger and Personal Capital, Americans said that high health insurance costs, disappointing investment performance, and debt are keeping them from saving for retirement. Rising healthcare costs are a major concern of Americans of all ages. Personal finance site Kiplinger and digital wealth manager Personal Capital asked 850 Americans what stood in the way of saving for retirement. The data shows that three main factors have put a strain on Americans' ability to save for retirement: healthcare costs, poor investment performance, and debt. For many Americans, high costs of living and the resulting debt is standing in the way of saving for retirement and building long-term wealth.
In a survey from Insider and Morning Consult, the majority of partnered millennials said money added stress to their relationships. While slightly more millennials with a financial imbalance — that is, with very different incomes — reported stress, most millennials with similar incomes did as well. But, who's making more is just another factor adding financial stress to millennials' lives. According to data from the same survey, Gen Xers also report quite a bit of money stress in their relationships, with about 56% overall reporting money stress. Millennials are putting off life events as a result of their money stressMoney might be adding stress to millennials' relationships ... but it's also adding stress to just about everything else.
Wealth is elusive in Silicon Valley, and one software engineer told Mercury News how he determines whether someone is wealthy: Do they have to work to live? To be sure, the financial markers to be considered middle class in Silicon Valley and Bay Area cities are higher than other parts of the US. Costs don't let up the closer you get to the heart of Silicon Valley. Silicon Valley is on the brink of millionaire mania, The New York Times' Nellie Bowles reported. Ultimately there isn't one net worth or income figure that symbolizes wealth in Silicon Valley, Dietz told Mercury News: "Wealth isn't necessarily a number.

The bigger Murdoch’s empire became, the more power he had to clear away obstacles to further its expansion. Like his father, Lachlan considered the idea of meddling with such an important profit driver a form of madness.
