AdvertisementChina's warplanes are pressuring Taiwan and have all but eliminated an important dividing line, with near-daily incursions creating a dangerous new normal. Since 2020, Taiwan has released regular, almost daily updates on incursions in its air defense identification zone by Chinese military aircraft. In 2021, the Chinese military flew 972 aircraft into Taiwan's ADIZ, and that number nearly doubled in 2022. "We've become desensitized to high numbers of the military aircraft flying across the median line of the Taiwan Strait," Shattuck told Business Insider. Satellite imagery suggests that Israeli’s attack on Iran appears to have damaged a key element of Tehran’s ballistic missile production and air defense sites, potentially leaving it exposed to any future attacks, military analysts told NBC News. Israel appears to have targeted Iran’s missile production process instead of storage sites — thereby making it harder for Tehran to add to an already dwindling supply of missiles. “It was a very smart attack, targeting all the sensitive sites,” Hinz said in an interview. "The missiles are dispersed all over the country, some of them are deep inside Iran and deep underground. "But when you hit the missile production facilities, you can't produce them anymore."

In today’s edition, national political correspondent Steve Kornacki breaks down the key areas where Donald Trump's standing with Puerto Rican voters will be tested. Where Trump’s support among Puerto Rican voters will be put to the testSteve KornackiDonald Trump’s campaign appearance in Allentown, Pa., this evening comes amid questions over whether the fallout from his Madison Square Garden rally will cost him support among Puerto Rican voters. Allentown is a majority-Hispanic city of 125,000, and about one-quarter of its overall population is of Puerto Rican descent — one of the highest concentrations of Puerto Ricans anywhere in the U.S. Pennsylvania’s polls will close at 8 p.m. EST on Election Night, but we may get a big clue about Trump’s Puerto Rican support before that. Majority-Hispanic Osceola County in Florida, just south of Orlando, is a large county (population about 450,000 — and growing) that’s about one-third Puerto Rican.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a long-shot bid by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who ended his independent presidential campaign, to remove his name from the ballot in the key swing states of Wisconsin and Michigan. Voting is already underway in both states, so it never seemed likely the Supreme Court would grant Kennedy's requests. The Wisconsin Supreme Court and the Michigan Supreme Court both ruled against Kennedy last month. Kennedy has not sought to remove himself from the ballot in all states. In fact, in New York he tried to have his name added to the ballot in a bid to frustrate Democrats, a move the Supreme Court rejected in September.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq advanced 0.78% to a record close of 18,712.75. Ahead of their earnings releases, shares of Meta jumped 2.6%, and Alphabet advanced 1.8% on Tuesday. This will mark the busiest week of the earnings season with more than 150 S&P 500 companies scheduled to have reported by Friday’s close. Notably, the blue-chip Dow broke a five-day losing streak, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq notched its eighth positive session of the last nine.

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Mike Johnson took a dig at Obamacare during an event in Pennsylvania on Monday, telling a crowd there will be “massive” health care changes in America if Donald Trump wins the election. “No Obamacare,” Johnson responded, rolling his eyes. And so health care is one of the sectors and we need this across the board,” Johnson said. Johnson, who has crisscrossed the country to campaign for GOP House candidates, spoke only in broad terms at his Monday event. “If you take government bureaucrats out of the health care equation and you have doctor-patient relationships, it’s better for everybody.

Much of Trump's closing message is focused on illegal immigration, one of the centerpieces of his campaign. The interview, which was widely hyped by Trump and his supporters, was a snapshot of his, at best, untraditional attempt at a campaign closing message and, at worst, his tendency to step on his own policy pushes. The discipline of the Harris campaign contrasts with that of Trump, whose late-cycle rallies have maintained the sort of rambling, unfocused structure he has long been known for. That dynamic can be seen even in his final speeches as Trump tries to close out his third presidential campaign. “This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign,” Danielle Alvarez, a senior adviser, said in a statement shortly after the joke was made.

Former President Donald Trump’s promises that he’ll win New York are more empty bluster than evidence-based prediction. Two statewide Siena polls have also shown Trump performing better than his 2020 vote share in New York State as a whole. But overall, these races include the most competitive around New York State, and all but the 18th are currently represented in Congress by a Republican. Democrats are not concerned about the top of the ticket, but for those down ballot — where Democrats lost five competitive House races here in 2022 — this election is a chance to earn back what was once theirs. “Progressive state issues like bail reform and congestion pricing remain challenging for Democrats in the New York suburbs,” longtime New York Republican operative Matt Coleman said.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, more and more hotels are happy to show off their spookier side as a result. “They ditched the [premise of], ‘Oh, people may be scared,’ and said, ‘Wow, people will come and I can market it, so we’re a haunted hotel,’” said Melchiorri. But state officials resisted his pressure, judges tossed out his team’s lawsuits, and Pence defied Trump and carried out his constitutional duty to affirm the result of the vote. If Trump sought to challenge the election results, he would have two potential paths to try to overturn the results, and both routes are “long shots,” said Hasen, director of the Safeguarding Democracy Project at UCLA Law School. Given the heightened security risk, some state officials have made plans to scrap public, high-profile ceremonies to certify election results in state capitols. Election officials across the country also have bolstered security at polling places, including expanding police presence and issuing bulletproof vests to election workers. State officials resisted.

They argue that Casey, a middle-of-the-road liberal, had previously not been at the forefront of the populist economic turn in both parties. Casey’s Senate website dedicates an entire page to “greedflation,” which he also discussed at length in his speech at the Democratic National Convention this summer. The core of Casey’s argument is the assertion that, from July 2020 to July 2022, corporate profits rose five times faster than overall inflation. But equally important, in their view, was its ability to evoke the promise of the office she seeks. That was not the original intent of Harris’ major address, aides said, but they believe it serves as a timely rebuttal. A permit for the event showed as many as 20,000 people were expected to attend, with spillover onto the National Mall – her first major campaign speech outdoors in Washington.
