Those potential returns can come from two places: Danaher stock and shares of Veralto (VLTO), the soon-to-be-standalone company that's in the business of water quality. When we receive Veralto shares on Monday, as all Danaher shareholders will, we intend to keep them, based on their current expected value. A "when-issued" market was established Wednesday for both Danaher and Veralto stock, providing a first look at how investors are valuing the companies on their own. Investors will receive one share in Veralto for every three shares of Danaher they own. The caveat is that spin-off debuts can see substantial volatility, and if Veralto shares were to receive a big pop, our discipline may require us to capitalize on that and take profits.

And while 12 months of speculation can seem like a lifetime for investors who just want an answer, it's really only a small moment in economic history. Reid and his team spotted plenty of patterns in all that data, including the common warning signs of a recession. For example, scholars and economists have been tracking recession data in the UK since 1700, while Italy only began tracking recessions in 1980. Reid wrote that black swan events such as geopolitical shocks, natural disasters, and global pandemics happen more often than people think. "And that's before we get on to more traditional causes of recessions, like monetary tightening or speculative bubbles," Reid wrote.

In fiscal 2019, GM's fourth-quarter profit took a $3.6 billion hit from a 40-day UAW strike. NICKELS & STEAMROLLEREstimating the size of hedge funds' basis trade bets is difficult because transparency and visibility around hedge funds is so low at the best of times, especially with regard to their more complex activities and strategies. Many analysts look at leveraged funds' position in Treasuries futures, and the Aug. 30 Fed paper also noted speculators' repo borrowings. This is a fairly reliable sign of basis trade activity, the Aug. 30 Fed paper says. Overnight repo rates have steadily tracked the fed funds policy rate since March 2022. Basis trade liquidation, as funds got squeezed out of their positions through margin and collateral calls as volatility rocketed, likely contributed to that dislocation.

With artificial intelligence progressing by leaps and bounds, how will it impact the job of the junior banker? She said it's already helping junior bankers get their jobs done faster. "It will allow junior bankers to operate at a higher level with that first pass of analysis being prepared by the technology," said Torrente.
