Rosalynn Carter, the former first lady, has entered hospice care at her home in Georgia alongside her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, who has been in hospice since February, the family announced on Friday. Mrs. Carter, 96, revealed in May that she has dementia, but Friday’s statement offered no further details about her condition or any other ailments she might be suffering. “She and President Carter are spending time with each other and their family,” the Carter Center said in a statement on behalf of Jason Carter, the center’s chairman and a grandson of the former first couple. It is meant for patients not expected to live more than six months, although Mr. Carter’s experience defying that timetable has demonstrated that the duration of hospice care can vary. Mr. Carter turned 99 last month and is the longest-living president in American history.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A Louisiana lawyer who objected to the state bar association’s public statements on several issues including health tips and LGBTQ rights can no longer be forced to join or pay dues to the association, a federal appeals court has ruled. Circuit Court of Appeals order, dated Monday, blocks the Louisiana State Bar Association from forcing attorney Randy Boudreaux to join the LSBA or pay its dues, at least for now. Boudreaux's is one of more than two dozen cases playing out around the country challenging state requirements that attorneys join and pay dues to state bar associations. Organizations including the Goldwater Institute and, in Louisiana, the Pelican Institute, are challenging mandatory bar association membership as violations of free speech rights. The association's promotion of an article on the effects of student loan debt on young lawyers was not germane, the court found.

Fain’s sermonette underscores a trend that has largely gone unnoticed: The Social Gospel movement is making a comeback.
