Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks during a campaign rally at Johnny Mercer Theatre in Savannah, Georgia, on Sept. 24, 2024. If implemented, this proposal would reverse a major component of Trump's 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which phased out traditional R&D tax credits. Starting in 2022, businesses were no longer allowed to write off their R&D expenses the same year they incurred them. The former president also said he would appoint a specialized "manufacturing ambassador" if he wins a second term in the White House. Trump also doubled down on his hardline approach to trade, saying he would impose a "100% or 200% tariff" on cars imported from Mexico.

Helsinki, Finland — Finland will return two giant pandas to China in November, more than eight years ahead of time, as the zoo where they live can no longer afford their upkeep, the chair of the zoo’s board told Reuters on Tuesday. Since its founding in 1949, the People’s Republic of China has sent pandas to foreign zoos to strengthen trading ties, cement foreign relations and boost its international image. The Finnish agreement was for a stay of 15 years, but instead the pandas will soon go into a month-long quarantine before they are shipped back to China, according to Ahtari Zoo, the pandas’ current home. The truth about promotions

That was obviously a bad idea, and since then, we've spent a century and a half honing the art and science of promotions. To study promotions, the researchers conducted a series of clever experiments. But in other groups, managers were selected based on their own preferences. What did much better at predicting good managers was intelligence, as measured by a common IQ test. "Don't think, well, they like to talk, and therefore they're going to be a good manager."

Goldman SachsWage growth is down from 6% in August 2022 to 3.9%, according to Goldman Sachs. Still, Goldman Sachs thinks the US unemployment rate will drift down to 4% in 2025, which would be a healthy figure. An influx of immigrants may have affected this trend, Goldman Sachs economists say. Goldman SachsLabor costs rose 7% in 2023 for S&P 500 companies and 5% for firms in the Russell 2000, Goldman found. Goldman Sachs shared a sector-neutral list of 50 stocks in the S&P 500 that have high labor costs, which should disproportionately benefit as wage inflation slows as raises become rarer.

Low global demand forecasts, coupled with new oil supply coming from non-OPEC countries, spell a long period of subdued crude prices. Has demand growth hit its apex, and is it just downhill from here? The oil producer group's 2024 World Oil Outlook report, released Tuesday, predicts strong energy demand growth of 24% globally between now and 2050. It also forecasts "robust medium-term growth" in oil demand reaching 112.3 million barrels per day in 2029, an increase of 10.1 million barrels per day compared to 2023. The IEA still sees global oil demand rising; it just forecasts a smaller rise, and expects it to peak by the end of the decade.

Self-compassionate touch, which can be practiced anywhere, can include stroking the upper arms like a hug. Milko/E+/Getty ImagesThe study showed a single 20-second session of self-compassionate touch significantly reduced stress, increased kindness to the participant and improved mental well-being. However, Hafeez noted that while self-compassionate touch showed similar mental health benefits to long-term therapy, it is not a complete substitute for it — especially among those with diagnosed mental health conditions. Instead, she advised people to think of self-compassionate touch as an added tool for their mental health toolbox. The study results showed the more people make self-compassionate touch a habit, the greater the mental health benefits.

The funds target distributions equal to six times the dividend payouts on the Nasdaq-100 Index and four times the S & P 500 dividend, respectively. The idea behind the Pacer funds is that the funds will capture more of that upside during market rallies, according to Sean O'Hara, president at Pacer ETF Distributors. The QDPL's website currently shows a distribution yield of 5.79%, or more than four-times the roughly 1.3% dividend yield on the S & P 500, according to YCharts.com. The dividend futures could also see bigger gains if more companies in the index decide to start paying dividends. To be sure, the dividend futures contracts could also decrease in value during times of economic stress.

Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond called the devices “a huge problem,” adding they were still investigating whether the shooters used a switch or another type of weapon. “Machine gun conversion devices have no place in our community,” US Attorney Prim Escalona said. Woodfin, the Birmingham mayor, noted that conversion devices are illegal federally but not under state law, and he called on the state legislature to ban the devices. Last week he participated in a demonstration at a Montgomery shooting range in which trained firearm experts tried (and failed) to aim while using the conversion devices. This year, the city of Chicago filed a lawsuit against Glock, alleging the handgun company has failed to prevent the use of conversion devices on its weapons.

CNN —After more than five decades at the forefront of United States foreign policy, President Joe Biden may have hoped to use his speech to over a hundred world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in New York to burnish both his own legacy and the country’s leadership on the world stage. “The world has changed, and the world’s gotten more difficult in many ways,” one senior administration official said. Election loomingIn New York, world leaders will find themselves grappling with the growing list of global flashpoints – all while an election just weeks away looms over the US’ role as the democratic world’s champion, benefactor and leading arms supplier. While Biden will be formally representing the US at the table, former president Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are separately meeting with world leaders to bolster relationships and outline their own goals. This will be followed by a meeting focused on Ukraine reconstruction with world leaders – a critical topic ahead of Biden’s meeting with Zelensky later this week.

Stefan Wittmann, who is also a senior official at German trade union Verdi, told CNBC's Annette Weisbach that "we certainly hope we can avoid" a hostile takeover by the Italian bank. "But if it [a hostile takeover] is unavoidable, we think that two-thirds of jobs will disappear, that there will be another significant cut in the branches," he said, according to a translation. "We will see in particular that UniCredit does not want all Commerzbank customers at all, but that it focuses on the supposedly best customers, namely the wealthy customers," he added.

The stock market runs a bigger risk of an unsustainable melt-up, according to Ed Yardeni. AdvertisementStocks run the risk of seeing an unsustainable, dot-com style melt-up, thanks to the Federal Reserve's recent rate cut, according to market veteran Ed Yardeni. That move sparked a rally in stocks to fresh records —but it's also raised the odds of a stock market melt-up, he said, meaning investors are now facing the risk of an unsustainable market boom. And while inflation has cooled from its highs several years ago, it is still a risk, Yardeni noted.
