SVB Doesn’t Deserve a Taxpayer Bailout
  + stars: | 2023-03-12 | by ( Vivek Ramaswamy | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced Sunday evening that Silicon Valley Bank’s uninsured depositors would gain access to their deposits on Monday. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. insures only deposits up to $250,000. The bailout creates incentives for risky behavior, teaching large depositors that they can throw money at risky banks without diversifying or conducting diligence. SVB long lobbied for looser risk limits by arguing that its failure wouldn’t create systemic risk and thus didn’t merit special intervention by the U.S. government. Another option would have been to increase the FDIC coverage limit to a level that would avert a run, shoring up public confidence in other U.S. banks without showing favoritism toward SVB.
In a rare GOP move in this current climate, former VP Mike Pence praised journalists for reporting on the Capitol riot. Pence is one of several Republicans expected to launch a presidential bid alongside former President Trump. "President Trump was wrong. "For what you do to preserve and strengthen this great democracy, you have my heartfelt thanks and I know the thanks of a grateful nation. Thanks for what you do to preserve freedom," Pence said to reporters on Saturday, according to CNN.
A Democratic think tank has grown increasingly alarmed by an effort to field a third-party candidate in 2024. The "No Labels" effort is "going to hurt Biden and help Trump," Third Way's Jim Kessler told Insider. "I've been tracking what No Labels is doing, and at a certain point concluded, this is real and it's going to hurt Biden and help Trump," Kessler said. Of 23 states they say its will win, 19 of those states Biden won in 2020, he said. "But we know who they're going to nominate.
NEW YORK, March 10 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Nearly three years with no U.S. bank failures just came to an unseemly end. The bank owned by SVB Financial (SIVB.O) relied more heavily on large, and therefore, uninsured, deposits than other banks. A buyer – say, a bank that covets SVB’s relationship with upwardly mobile entrepreneurs – might swoop in and buy the whole thing. Other depositors would receive certificates of receivership, which entitle them to dividends payable from the proceeds of selling the bank’s assets. SVB had around $165 billion in deposits as of Feb. 28, it said in a presentation on March 8.

Vivek Ramaswamy alleged that a consultant offered him the chance to buy his way onto a CPAC straw poll. Asked if he agreed to pay to be placed second in the straw poll, he responded: "Absolutely not." Ramaswamy, who has never served in political office, received just 1% of the vote in the unscientific straw poll of potential Republican primary candidates. According to Politico, a Ramaswamy aide said they recalled the phone call offer. The aide claimed the consultant offered to "get tickets and bus a bunch of people in for the straw poll" if they paid "upward of $100,000," per Politico.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis answers questions from the media in the Florida Cabinet following his "State of the State" address during a joint session of the Florida Senate and House of Representatives at the Florida State Capitol in Tallahassee, Florida, on March 7, 2023. Republicans gained supermajorities in both chambers of the Florida state legislature following the November midterms, when Democrats woefully underperformed in the Sunshine State. We rank number one in the nation for parental involvement in education," DeSantis said in the speech. DeSantis' framed Florida as a "blueprint" for America, suggesting that his state-level actions pose a recipe for national success. If he runs for president, DeSantis will join an expanding primary field that already includes Trump, former South Carolina Gov.
Florida lawmakers are meeting over the next 60 days to pass new legislation. "It's the Ron DeSantis show," House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell said. Ron DeSantis hasn't formally announced he's running for president — and that's in part because his business in Florida isn't finished yet. Maryland ex-governor won't run for U.S. president

Hogan, who served eight years as Maryland governor ending in January, is considered a moderate in a party that has moved rightward. Trump won his party's 2016 nomination after facing off against 16 other Republican candidates. "The stakes are too high for me to risk being part of another multicar pileup that could potentially help Mr. Trump recapture the nomination." He has one major opponent announced for the Republican nomination - former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley - though activist investor Vivek Ramaswamy also has entered the race. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo are among those considering challenging Trump for the nomination.
Members of Trump's inner circle claim that Fox News has put a "soft ban" on him, a report says. Trump has not appeared on Fox News once since he announced his presidential bid in November. "Everyone knows that there's this 'soft ban' or 'silent ban,'" one source close to the former president told the outlet. "It's certainly — however you want to say, quiet ban, soft ban, whatever it is — indicative of how the Murdochs feel about Trump in this particular moment." One unnamed Trump aide told Semafor that they've heard about the "soft ban" directly from people at Fox.
Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis are top of mind at the 2023 Conservative Political Action Conference. CPAC participants suspect 2024 will come down to those two, while others vie for the VP slot. 'An interesting race'Rory McSchane, a GOP political strategist from Austin, Texas is in the more the merrier camp. "My sincere hope is that she would be the vice president," Yadeta said of having Haley round out the 2024 ticket. Should Scott wind up taking the plunge, Bencosme said she could see herself supporting him in the GOP primary — and possibly beyond.

LOS ANGELES, March 3 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Venture capitalists are trading reality stars for policy wonks. Hundreds of top venture capitalists flocked to Los Angeles this week to congregate at a two-day, invite-only soirée for tech’s elite. For 2022, venture-backed companies collected nearly $240 billion for their coffers, 31% lower than the record $345 billion in 2021, according to Reuters. Trump fans told Insider no one else should jump in because things are already too mixed up. "What I'm most looking forward to, obviously, is President Trump," she said, noting that she planned to be front and center for his keynote address on Saturday evening. "I think that's a good group," he said, adding, "That's enough." But President Trump is the one that we need," Le told Insider. Vivek Ramaswamy announced his candidacy for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination on February 21. The biotech entrepreneur, who is the son of Indian immigrants, was Harvard and Yale-educated. He became a conservative firebrand after writing anti-woke books and regularly appearing on Fox News. Ramaswamy is the son of immigrants from India, was an overachiever at school, and even had a short-lived rap career while at Harvard. He's a longshot for the GOP nomination, but the conservative firebrand says he has big plans to start a "cultural movement."
WASHINGTON, Feb 26 (Reuters) - The Republican Party plans to ask 2024 presidential candidates to pledge support for the eventual nominee, Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said on Sunday, espousing an idea so far not embraced by former President Donald Trump. Candidates who do not sign the pledge will not be allowed to participate in party-sponsored debates during the state-by-state presidential nominating contests, McDaniel said. Trump, who remains popular in the Republican Party but is already facing challenges in his next White House bid from former supporters including Nikki Haley, has so far refused to commit to supporting the eventual Republican nominee. "We're saying you're not going to get on the debate stage unless you make this pledge. Trump did not immediately react publicly to her comments but a campaign spokesperson told Reuters, "President Trump will support the Republican nominee because it will be him."
Efforts to recoup them will highlight major flaws in political donations. On Thursday, former Chief Executive Sam Bankman-Fried was hit with additional criminal charges, including an accusation that he conspired with two former FTX executives to make more than 300 illegal political donations. Ray is hoping to add politicians’ returned donations to his coffers, and past blowups suggest he will have some luck. Madoff and Stanford’s political contributions, totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars each, pale in comparison to the $84 million-plus FTX executives gave campaigns. No other FTX executives, including Ryan Salame and Nishad Singh, have been charged with campaign finance violations at this time.
Ramaswamy Reaches for the Presidency

Donald Trump proved that you don’t need to hold elective office before you try for the Oval Office, and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy is taking that as inspiration as he announced Tuesday that he’s running for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024. He has a chance to make a contribution to the race even if he is a long shot. The 37-year-old Ohio native attended Harvard and earned a law degree from Yale, but don’t hold that against him. In 2014 he also founded a biotechnology firm, Roivant Sciences , and served as CEO until 2021. We’ve come to know him over the years through his contributions to these pages, which are provocative and well-wrought even if we disagree.
Why I’m Running for President
  + stars: | 2023-02-22 | by ( Vivek Ramaswamy | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
America is in the midst of a national identity crisis. We hunger for purpose at a moment when faith, patriotism and hard work are on the decline. The Republican Party’s top priority should be to fill this void with an inspiring national identity that dilutes the woke agenda to irrelevance. To put America first, we need to rediscover what America is. That’s why I am running for president.
Vivek Ramaswamy says the nation faces an identity crisis over what it stands for and where it needs to go. Vivek Ramaswamy , a multimillionaire biotech company founder and investor, said Tuesday that he is entering the 2024 Republican presidential nomination race. The native of southwestern Ohio has criticized what he calls woke capitalism, including investment based on environmental, social and corporate-governance principles. Under ESG, individuals seek to invest in ways consistent with their own values and to benefit from growth in sectors such as renewable energy.
Former Vice President Mike Pence said Wednesday that he would prefer a Republican alternative to former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. "I think we're going to have better choices" than Trump, Pence said on CNBC's "Squawk Box" when asked if the GOP should nominate someone other than the former president next year. The potential 2024 candidate Pence did not explicitly rule out supporting Trump if he became the GOP nominee. "I'll keep you posted," Pence said when asked if he sought the Republican presidential nomination. After several relatively quiet months when Trump was the only notable Republican on the campaign trail, former South Carolina Gov.
A former biotechnology investor and executive, Ramaswamy will pursue the Republican nomination in what is shaping up to be a crowded field. A political outsider, Ramaswamy rose to prominence in 2021 as the author of "Woke Inc: Inside Corporate America's Social Justice Scam". But Ramaswamy's contrarian message made him popular in conservative political circles and a regular guest on cable TV shows. Silly Meta, Roblox isn’t just for kids

NEW YORK, Feb 15 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Video-game and social-media hub Roblox (RBLX.N) isn’t playing around when it comes to expanding its audience. The company behind MeepCity and Royale High has been racing alongside Meta Platforms (META.O) to turn the metaverse into more than just a vague buzzword. Despite being unprofitable and considerably smaller than Facebook’s owner, it is putting up a solid fight. Meta is mulling ways to attract younger users, including maybe opening the game up to minors older than 13. They do not reflect the views of Reuters News, which, under the Trust Principles, is committed to integrity, independence, and freedom from bias.
