CNN —The good news for Glasgow Rangers is the Scottish club has pocketed over $15 million for competing in the Champions League. The bad news is, after waiting 12 years to get back into the competition’s group stages, the club’s return has been nothing short of a nightmare. ANDY BUCHANAN/AFP/AFP via Getty ImagesAfter its long awaited return to the group stages, Rangers was immediately up against it after being handed a very difficult draw. We were all happy we came into the Champions League because we weren’t competing at this level in 12 years so that’s very positive,” he told reporters on Tuesday. Despite its disappointment on the pitch in Europe, Rangers will benefit financially from its Champions League campaign.
But none have been more famous – or loved by Napoli fans – than Diego Maradona. “I have a video of Napoli fans chanting the names of the players before the game against Liverpool. “But Kvaratskhelia is shrugging defenders off the ball.”According to Badalashvili, the reciprocated love Kvaratskhelia and the Napoli fans have for one another is what jumps out to him most. His surname is already ‘Kvaradona.’ Napoli fans gave him the nickname ‘Kvaradona.’ And when I spoke with Napoli fans, they said when they see Kvara, they see Maradona.”Kvaratskhelia attempts a shot against Rangers in the Champions League. In the cities in Georgia, you will see very many people in shirts of Kvara: either Napoli shirts or Georgian national team.

The team had won the League Cup and the FA Cup, was going toe-to-toe with Manchester City in the English Premier League, and had reached the Champions League final. Ultimately, two trophies went to Anfield instead of four, as Liverpool lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League and fell one point short in the league. For years, Liverpool has been the only team to challenge City for the league title – winning it in 2020 – yet this season Liverpool and City are worlds apart. ‘Liverpool being bullied’So, why is Liverpool struggling so badly in the league this season? “The Premier League is a really hard league to play in and is a long, difficult, sometimes physically and mentally, nine months for you.

Liverpool's second successive defeat against a team in the bottom three, following last week's reverse at Nottingham Forest, left them in ninth place, eight points off the top four. Manchester City have 29 points from 12 games, one point more than Arsenal who host bottom club Nottingham Forest on Sunday. I thought we had a really good start then conceded a freakish goal," Klopp told Sky Sports. He had a good start but couldn't keep it going. Thiago has been ill, up front the same (players) play all the time - they are the three strikers we have left," Klopp said glumly. Liverpool have league games at Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton to come before next month's World Cup, which cannot come quickly enough as Klopp seeks to find some answers to his side's poor form in the top-flight. It's our situation and it means we have to help ourselves, and that is what we will do," he said.

AMSTERDAM, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Liverpool overcame a slow start to beat hosts Ajax Amsterdam 3-0 on Wednesday, ensuring a top-two finish in Group A and progress into the knockout stage of the Champions League. The victory kept them three points behind leaders Napoli, who won 3-0 at home to Rangers to make it maximum points from their five group games. Napoli visit Anfield on Tuesday to decide top place, when Liverpool would need at least a 3-0 win to edge the Serie A leaders on the head-to-head after losing 4-1 in September. Ajax needed to win by two goals on Wednesday to keep up their slim Champions League hopes but will now be battling with Rangers in Glasgow next week for a Europa League spot. "We had a tough half an hour where Ajax made a lot of pressure and we needed to defend with a lot of passion.
Sunday's results leave nothing between Arsenal and United in the early going, with the two sides tied on 12 points and having scored 11 goals scored while conceding none. Waelti opened the scoring for Arsenal in the 15th minute, snapping up a clearance from a corner and belting it into the net, and Norway international Maanum made it 2-0 seven minutes later with a powerful run and finish. In Sunday's late game, champions Chelsea had to battle hard on a sodden pitch but eventually won 2-0 away at Brighton & Hove Albion to stay third, level with the leaders on points but behind on goal difference and having played a game more. Also on Saturday, Jamaican striker Khadija Shaw scored either side of the break to help Manchester City to a comfortable 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur. "I have a feeling that we lost two points, especially with the way we started the game and the chances we had," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said. Newcastle have already drawn with Manchester City and Manchester United this season and their only loss was a stoppage-time defeat by Liverpool. Sunday's win at Tottenham sent the clearest message yet that they can challenge for a Champions League berth. Harry Kane pulled one back for third-placed Tottenham in the 54th minute with his 10th goal of the season but Newcastle comfortably held on for the points. "Real pride in the players today and great to be part of those scenes," Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, who took over last year with the club heading towards relegation, told reporters.
MANCHESTER, England, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Struggling Nottingham Forest pulled off a stunning 1-0 win over Liverpool to claim only their second victory of the season in the Premier League on Saturday, while champions Manchester City continued their chase of leaders Arsenal. Liverpool had gathered some momentum after a poor start to the season and arrived at the City Ground to face bottom club Forest on the back of consecutive league wins. Forest moved off the bottom with nine points and manager Steve Cooper said: "This is a big win but only a win. To win a game against someone like Liverpool, you need to have very good moments at both ends. Liverpool are seventh on 16 points after 11 matches, 11 behind leaders Arsenal, who visit Southampton on Sunday.
MANCHESTER, England, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Erling Haaland struck twice and Kevin de Bruyne scored a stunning second-half goal as Manchester City earned a 3-1 home win over Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on Saturday. The victory moved second-placed City on to 26 points after 11 games, one behind leaders Arsenal who visit Southampton on Sunday. City captain De Bruyne then killed off the visitors' hopes of snatching a point by curling a shot from outside the area high into the net in the 75th minute. But they fell behind to the type of goal City are not usually associated with, a long kick downfield from goalkeeper Ederson which landed at the feet of Haaland after a mix-up between Brighton keeper Robert Sanchez and defender Adam Webster. "For the team and for myself to get the win today it went exactly how I hoped," Calvert-Lewin said. The result ended Palace's unbeaten run of three league games and also means that they are yet to win an away league game this term. "I think we were second best in every department of the game," Palace manager Patrick Vieira told the BBC. "We saw a team who played with determination to win the game and we didn't match that level.

CNN —Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said he will wait until Thursday to “deal with” Cristiano Ronaldo leaving early during the team’s 2-0 win against Tottenham. Ronaldo, who has had limited game time under ten Hag and tried to force a move away from United before the start of the season, was an unused substitute in Wednesday’s match. “I don’t pay attention (to that) today, we deal with that tomorrow,” the Dutch manager told reporters when asked about Ronaldo’s early exit. In his eight appearances so far this season – six of which have come from the subs bench – Ronaldo has scored just once. Next up is a trip to Chelsea on Saturday, while Tottenham plays Newcastle at home.

LONDON, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Juergen Klopp and Pep Guardiola's angry touchline rants during Sunday's stormy Premier League clash between Liverpool and Manchester City have put the behaviour of managers in the spotlight ahead of a midweek round of fixtures. Klopp apologised after the game, saying he deserved his red card, and on Tuesday the Football Association charged him with improper conduct, saying he had until Friday to respond. He did receive backing from fellow managers though with West Ham United's David Moyes saying he hopes the German would be on the touchline on Wednesday when his side travel to Anfield for a Premier League fixture. Lampard also said he did not believe there was a link between the conduct of Premier League managers and referees being abused in recreational games. But Newcastle's Eddie Howe, one of the calmer managers, said he was aware that his behaviour needed to set an example.
Oct 18 (Reuters) - European countries are facing more strikes and protests due to high energy prices and mounting costs of living. They are seeking to capitalise on anger with decades-high inflation to expand weeks of industrial action at oil refineries to other sectors. The Communication and Workers Union, representing 115,000 Royal Mail postal workers, held strikes in September and early October, and have threatened more strikes after months of failed negotiations over pay and operational changes. More than 300,000 members of Britain's largest nursing union have begun voting over a strike to demand a pay rise. BELGIUMThousands took to the streets in Brussels on Sept. 21 to protest at soaring energy prices and the cost of living.

Benzema had a stellar season with Real, scoring 44 goals in 46 games in all competitions as he helped guide them to a LaLiga and Champions League double. His 15 goals in the Champions League guided Real to a record-extending 14th title. Putellas, who was also named FIFA Best Women's Player earlier this year, was top scorer in the Champions League last season with 11 goals and scored 18 in the Primera Division. However, the teams in the Champions League final lost out on the Best Club award, which went to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City who won a fourth Premier League title in five years.
Man City miss a trick as Arsenal just will not go away
  + stars: | 2022-10-17 | by ( Peter Hall | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
MANCHESTER, England, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Liverpool's recent jitters meant they were there for the taking by Manchester City on Sunday, but the unusually conservative champions missed a trick, falling further behind Premier League leaders Arsenal who must be taken seriously as title contenders. While champions City, chasing a fifth league title in six seasons, travelled to Anfield unbeaten, having plundered 33 goals in nine league games at the start of the new campaign, Liverpool trailed in their wake. Liverpool looked nervy in possession, giving the ball away with regularity, but a normally ruthless City could not capitalise. With a four-point league lead, and having won 12 of their 13 games this season in all competitions, a first Premier League title since 2004 could be a realistic prospect. Soccer Football - Premier League - Liverpool v Manchester City - Anfield, Liverpool, Britain - October 16, 2022 Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola remonstrates with the fourth official after Phil Foden's goal was disallowed as Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp looks on REUTERS/Phil NobleLIVERPOOL, England, Oct 16 (Reuters) - Pep Guardiola said coins were thrown at him during Manchester City's 1-0 loss to Liverpool on Sunday, a heated encounter in which home coach Juergen Klopp was sent to the stands. Guardiola was furious with the decision, even before referee Anthony Taylor had finished viewing the pitch-side monitor, turning around to remonstrate with Liverpool fans in the stands. "Next time they will do it better, they didn't get me," Guardiola said. Liverpool later released a statement condemning some chants from City supporters during the match.
Salah raced away from Joao Cancelo to slot home and earn Liverpool a much-needed victory after they came into the encounter having suffered their worst start to a Premier League season after eight games since 2012-13. Hopefully this gives us more confidence," Salah, who had missed a similar opportunity to his goal earlier in the game, said. Liverpool kept coming at City after their VAR reprieve, with Salah spinning away superbly after a slip from Cancelo before firing the winner, sparking wild celebrations on the Kop. Salah has now been directly involved in 14 goals against City in all competitions for Liverpool - nine goals, five assists - his most against any opponent for the Reds. The final pass was lacking for the visitors in the end as Liverpool held on for just their third league win of the season.
City, who could have gone 16 points clear of their hosts with a win, had a Phil Foden goal disallowed, while Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp was shown a red card for remonstrating with a linesman after a tackle on Salah. Mikel Arteta's side have 27 points from 10 games with City and Tottenham Hotspur on 23. Chelsea are in fourth spot with 19 points, with a game in hand, thanks to a 2-0 win at Aston Villa courtesy of a double by England midfielder Mason Mount. Manchester United are fifth with 16 points from nine games after drawing 0-0 at home to sixth-placed Newcastle United, who have 15. Despite Arsenal's flying start to the season the popular theory is that relentless City are primed to claim a fifth title in six seasons.
During the US Civil War, Union and Confederate ships fought naval battles all over the world. She took 38 prizes and more than 1,000 prisoners, some of them joining the Confederate ship. From there, Shenandoah terrorized American ships in sea lanes around the Cape of Good Hope, through the Pacific, and into the Bering Sea off Alaska. Even after the Civil War was over, Shenandoah continued her Pacific rampage. The skipper just didn't believe Lee's surrender ended the war, even when American whaling captains told him so.
