Harris' labor split screen: From the Politics Desk

In today’s edition, we explore one positive and on negative development for Kamala Harris' support from organized labor. The influential Teamsters union on Wednesday declined to issue an endorsement in the presidential race, Megan Lebowitz and Alexandra Marquez report. Prior to the announcement, the Teamsters also released survey data showing more rank-and-file members preferred to endorse Trump than Harris. Still, Harris has won the endorsement of just about every other major labor union in the country (the International Association of Fire Fighters remains a notable holdout). Instead, the Trump campaign appears to be approaching this apparent assassination attempt as an opportunity rather than as a moment to reflect.

The Teamsters on Wednesday declined to endorse a candidate for president, the first time in decades that the union hasn't backed a candidate in the presidential election. It found that almost 60% of rank-and-file union members preferred to endorse Trump, while 34% backed Harris, according to an electronic member poll. The law forced union workers to accept a union contract that had been brokered by the Biden administration. The union endorsed Biden in 2020. The AFL-CIO, which represents dozens of unions and millions of workers, and the United Auto Workers union have each endorsed Harris.

“There’s no one that can organize quite like labor,” Harris campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said. All together, labor leaders predict thousands of union members will deploy to battleground states to knock on doors or work phone banks. “It will be determinative,” Butler said of the Sun Belt labor groups' role in the November election. “Arizona is going to be a state that, at the end of the day, will elect the president — President Harris — I truly believe that,” McLaughlin said. “Momentum will carry Vice President Harris and Governor [Tim] Walz through.

Andy Beshear signed an executive order Wednesday banning the scientifically discredited practice of so-called conversion therapy on minors in the state. “Conversion therapy has no basis in medicine or science, and it can cause significant long-term harm to our kids, including increased rates of suicide and depression. The same survey — which the governor's office cited in its statement — found that 54% of the LGBTQ youths who attempted suicide in the year prior were threatened with or subjected to conversion therapy. Advocates from The Trevor Project praised the governor's signing of the measure. Beshear's executive order comes amid the introduction of a historic number of anti-LGBTQ bills in state legislatures across the country this year.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign is making its latest push to Asian American voters, releasing a personal ad about her mother, Shyamala Gopalan. The 60-second ad, titled “My Mother,” highlights Harris’ speaking about her mom at the Democratic National Convention last month, alongside pictures and videos of Gopalan, who died in 2009. “My mother was a brilliant 5-foot-tall brown woman with an accent,” Harris said at the convention. At Berkeley, Gopalan became involved in the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, which is how she met Harris’ father, Donald Harris. The ad showcases images of other Asian individuals and families at work, playing cards, sitting on their porch and shopping at ethnic grocery stores.

Three decades is a “shamefully long” time for veterans to wait, the groups said in the report, especially considering the prevalence of toxins at military bases and deployment sites. “There isn’t a major conflict in the past 100 years that has been immune to this epidemic,” the report said. About 2.7 million service members who fought in the Vietnam War may have been exposed to the cancer-causing herbicide Agent Orange from 1962 to 1975, officials said. But the first veterans to be exposed had to wait nearly 30 years before Congress passed the Agent Orange Act of 1991, which established a link between the herbicide and certain cancers and diseases. Under the law, affected veterans no longer needed to show they were exposed to Agent Orange to get disability compensation.

The Marriner S. Eccles Federal Reserve building in Washington, DC, on June 25. Ting Shen/Bloomberg/Getty ImagesAfter all the hype that’s been brewing for over a year, you might think that once the Federal Reserve finally cuts interest rates the economy will look and feel completely different. Sure, the stock market could have some big swings the second the Fed releases its interest rate decision at 2 pm ET on Wednesday and when Fed Chair Jerome Powell speaks a half hour later. Mortgage rates and the interest rates Americans pay on a variety of loans will quickly drop as well. That’s because when the Fed lowers or raises rates, it takes a while for the full effect of those moves to be felt across the economy.

There’s been an odd numbness in the political ecosystem regarding the apparent second attempt to assassinate former President Donald Trump. The problem with political discourse in America right now is that we are all stuck in a social media funhouse mirror booth. I promise you that the way Americans speak about one another online isn’t the way most Americans behave in person with one another. As social media rose and became the main distributor and facilitator of political information, our politics have become more combative and less collaborative. Right now, our political information ecosystem doesn’t reward incrementalism or nuance, instead punishing both and, more to the point, rewarding those who make up the best stories.

Harris responded that she’d cap child care costs at 7% of working families’ income, following the Biden administration playbook that she was heavily involved in writing. “My plan is that no family, no working family, should pay more than 7% of their household income in child care,” Harris said Tuesday at a National Association of Black Journalists event, noting that steep child care expenses make it difficult for many parents to work. Child care advocates were buoyed by Harris’ answer on Tuesday. Parents with two kids in a child care center paid on average at least twice as much for that care as they did for the typical rent in 11 states and the District of Columbia in 2023, according to a Child Care Aware of America report released in May. That equates to 10% of median household income for a married couple with children and 32% of median income for a single parent with children, Child Care Aware found.

New York/London CNN —Tupperware Brands Corporation, whose food containers have been a mainstay in American kitchens, has filed for bankruptcy. “Over the last several years, the company’s financial position has been severely impacted by the challenging macroeconomic environment,” Laurie Ann Goldman, Tupperware president and CEO, said in a statement late Tuesday. Tupperware has historically only sold to consumers through so-called direct sales, most commonly at “Tupperware parties,” similar to cosmetic company Avon’s business model, and only began selling in Target in 2022. Many businesses file for bankruptcy protection to wind down some operations, shed debt and cut costs. A common route, also chosen by Tupperware, is Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which allows the company to solve its financial problems by restructuring.

And an expert in political violence and terrorism is worried the worst is yet to come. The justification of political violence online is getting worse, too, with increasingly high-profile people laughing off violent incidents. Plenty of such data exists about Trump's rhetoric, Pape noted, and he said there is no doubt that "incendiary political rhetoric increases support for political violence." "What you're seeing is real-world violence reflecting this significant rhetorical support for political violence on both the right and the left," Pape said. Ben Higgins tried to parlay his Bachelor success into a political career, but the campaign didn't last long. The focus on Bachelor Nation also makes sense given the franchise's viewership is dominated by one of the most crucial swing votes of recent elections: white women. In the past two presidential elections, white women were the most closely split demographic subgroup tracked by major exit polls. In 2016, Donald Trump won over 52% of white women against Hillary Clinton's 43%, exit polls found, while Trump bested Joe Biden in 2020 among white women 55% to 44%. The overlap between the swingiest demographic and the "Bachelor" audience suggests Bachelor Nation has value to those who seek to lead our nation.
