NOVEMBER 1942: An Intimate History of the Turning Point of World War II, by Peter Englund. Translated by Peter Graves. “This is a book about November 1942,” the Swedish economist and historian Peter Englund explains in his introductory note to the reader, “the month that marked the turning point of the Second World War.” November 1942 was the month that brought the Allies hard-fought victories in North Africa and inspired Churchill to say that the war had reached “the end of the beginning.”Englund’s approach to the subject is more or less the same as it was when, more than a decade ago, he used the diaries and memoirs of people who lived and survived during an earlier conflict to compose his acclaimed account, “The Beauty and the Sorrow: An Intimate History of the First World War.”“If you are wondering what I’ve added,” Englund writes, somewhat sternly, of his new book, “the answer is: nothing.” Apart from footnotes, then, all information — every detail of every day — is drawn from these records of personal experience. An “intimate history” does “not attempt to describe what the war was during these four critical weeks,” he explains, “but will try to say something about how it was.”Some of the 39 writers he has selected are well-known figures — Albert Camus; the Soviet journalist Vasily Grossman; the Australian surgeon captured by Japanese forces, Edward “Weary” Dunlop; the English pacifist and nurse Vera Brittain; the British war poet and tank driver Keith Douglas — but most are relatively obscure.

The Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon was dropped by United Talent Agency after comments she made at a recent pro-Palestinian rally drew criticism online. An agency spokesman, Richard Siklos, confirmed Tuesday that Sarandon was no longer represented by the agency but declined to elaborate. Sarandon was dropped after making remarks at a rally in New York City last week. Sarandon said at the rally that being critical of Israel should not be considered antisemitic. “There’s a terrible thing that’s happened where antisemitism has been confused with speaking up against Israel,” Sarandon said.

New York CNN —Nearly 900,000 Americans sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner this week will have unions – and the double-digit pay increases they won – to thank. The strike lasted more than six weeks before the union won contracts it was seeking from all three unionized US automakers. The unions won significant pay increases and job protections they were seeking. And even with some of the contracts that pass, some union members offer significant opposition, believing they could have negotiated for even more. The union won a contract approved by 86% of membership who voted on ratification.

While OpenAI later transitioned to a for-profit model, its controlling shareholder remains the nonprofit OpenAI Inc. and its board of directors. This unique structure made it possible for four OpenAI board members — the company's chief scientist, two outside tech entrepreneurs and an academic — to oust CEO Sam Altman on Friday. Officials with the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association say they too will ask for the right to strike if they don't have a contract deal with the airline in the next few days. “We definitely don't feel any equality here,” said Erik Harris, treasurer of the flight attendants' union. “How come the pilots have gotten their deal and we haven't?”Because of pattern bargaining, Southwest pilots are likely to wind up with raises like those approved for American Airlines pilots. The Southwest pilots' union has already tried and failed once this year to get permission to strike. My First Trip to ‘Rubyfruit Jungle’

The precocious and fearless protagonist of Rita Mae Brown’s 1973 novel “Rubyfruit Jungle” has served as a model of possibility for generations of young women, lesbians and outsiders of all kinds. Both of its time and ahead of it, “Rubyfruit Jungle” has inspired countless lives, works of art and Sapphic-themed spaces. Maybe just the first one toward whom I was evenly split between wanting and wanting to be — a category that only grew over time, and included heartthrobs of all genders. I read “Rubyfruit” over and over, starting around 11 or 12, still a couple of years out from my first kiss with a girl. I, too, wanted to hitch to New York where the other artists were, where the other queers lived.

Lane County, Oregon, which received a suspicious letter, will provide naloxone kits and train elections staff on administering it. The incident prompted King County Elections to procure naloxone, though the antidote was not needed then nor when its Renton office received a second fentanyl-laced letter this month. “We felt like it was just a good idea to have on hand for all kinds of scenarios these days,” King County Elections spokeswoman Halei Watkins said. A.S. Byatt, one of the most ambitious writers of her generation, whose dazzling 1990 novel, “Possession,” won the Booker Prize and brought her international fame as a novelist and unapologetic intellectual, has died. Her longtime publisher, Chatto & Windus, announced the death in a statement on Friday, saying she had died at her home. Ms. Byatt was a brilliant critic and scholar who broke the academic mold by publishing 11 novels and six collections of short stories. “I am not an academic who happens to have written a novel,” she bristled in an interview with The New York Times Magazine in 1991. The mystery is set in motion when a young scholar discovers something extraordinary at the London Library in 1985: old love letters tucked inside a rare edition of Victorian poetry.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — President Joe Biden on Thursday signed a temporary spending bill a day before a potential government shutdown, pushing a fight with congressional Republicans over the federal budget into the new year, as wartime aid for Ukraine and Israel remains stalled. Biden signed the bill in San Francisco, where he is hosting the summit of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation economies. The president signed the bill at the Legion of Honor Museum, where he held a dinner for APEC members. He portrayed the temporary funding bill as setting the ground for a spending “fight” with the Senate next year. The spending bill does not include the White House’s nearly $106 billion request for wartime aid for Israel and Ukraine.

Nov 17 (Reuters) - Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne may be one of the best assist providers in the Premier League but the Belgian was forced to concede he played no part in assisting off the pitch by co-writing Canadian rapper Drake's new song "Wick Man". Drake's new song was released on Friday and the credits list a 'K. The viral image quickly got De Bruyne's attention and although the 32-year-old played along at first, he quickly denied having assisted the rapper. "Drake needed an assist," De Bruyne wrote in a cheeky post on social media. De Bruyne is currently recovering after surgery on a hamstring injury he suffered on the opening day of the Premier League season in August.

New York CNN —For over a year, the red-hot housing market has been at the mercy of the Federal Reserve’s rate hikes, which have driven mortgage rates to sky-high levels. Mortgage rates have hovered above 7% since August, according to Freddie Mac data. Both those factors have helped create a scorching-hot housing market and a boom in homebuilder stocks, as Americans turned to building as a buying alternative. Moderating bond yields could change the narrative for the housing market. Tight supply and elevated mortgage rates this year made home purchases the least affordable they’ve been since 1984.

The board of ChatGPT-maker Open AI said Friday it has pushed out its co-founder and CEO Sam Altman after a review found he was “not consistently candid in his communications” with the board. “The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI,” the artificial intelligence company said in a statement. “Most of us are fighting for the same things, fighting against the same things.”When Ms. Henry reads about grim news events, she finds herself turning to social media to process her thoughts — an impulse that has also built her following. Right after reading about the fall of Roe v. Wade, she made a TikTok, liked by more than 300,000 people, in which she cried while reading abortion stories aloud. “It’s sometimes easier to, well — not put pen to paper, but type out your feelings and articulate them that way,” Ms. Henry said. Even though they’ve never met you, you know they care about you.”That’s a familiar sentiment to an older generation of feminist writers, who also channeled their grief into blog posts that were funny, fervent and raw.
