In 2023, the overall value of M&A transactions dipped globally to $2.9 trillion across 53,529 deals, down from $3.4 trillion across 57,830 transactions in 2022. Business Insider partnered with MergerLinks , a financial-data service that tracks deals, to present the fifth edition of "The Rainmakers," the 20 M&A bankers who orchestrated the largest deals in North America. MergerLinks tracks publicly announced deals and calculates deal values on a net basis, including both equity and debt pieces. This year’s list has a mix of returnees and first-timers and was dominated by energy bankers, including Goldman’s Sikhtian and Morgan Stanley’s Hoover. AdvertisementWalmart would not provide details on its points-based attendance system to Business Insider. AdvertisementSimilar to Walmart's policy, Amazon uses a points-based attendance system that could land employees in hot water if they hit eight points in a rolling 60-day period, according to the company. Many companies, including mid-size ones, have started to implement a points-based system to track lateness and absences, Zambrano noted. Amazon disputed the description of its points-based attendance system as totally "automated." "The attendance system works very similar to a standard time clock system," Stephenson, Amazon's spokesperson, told Business Insider.

As the first earnings season of 2024 draws to a close, CNBC's Jim Cramer gave his take on the most recent reports from the Magnificent Seven mega caps, awarding particular kudos to Nvidia and Amazon . He first lauded Nvidia, which reported record revenue up 265% thanks to continued high demand for its artificial intelligence products. He then called Amazon "the most definitive summa of all," with a hot advertising business and growing web services sector. Cramer also awarded Meta a "summa," praising its advertising capabilities and WhatsApp business. And Tesla earned a "gentleman's C," Cramer said, uncertain about how this year will shape up for the company.

Just consider three core holdings in the portfolio: Apple , Starbucks , and Nvidia . Nvidia generates 21% of its overall revenue from Mainland China, while Apple gets 19%, and Starbucks 9%. Xiamen-based Luckin Coffee, for example, overtook Starbucks in market share in China during 2023, with double the retail locations there. However, Nvidia still dominates the AI chip market in China, and it's difficult to see its rivals catching up anytime soon. The company has twice re-engineered chips for the Chinese market to comply with U.S. rules.

The weapon is still under development and is not yet in orbit, Biden administration officials have emphasized publicly. But Russia has recently made progress in its efforts to develop a nuclear EMP — a related but far more alarming technology. This would almost certainly be “a last-ditch weapon” for Russia, the US official and other sources said — because it would do the same damage to whatever Russian satellites were also in the area. According to those sources, the intelligence community is now scrambling to figure out how to preserve its access. Russia has withdrawn from several arms control treaties in recent years, leaving the post-Cold War arms control architecture all but gutted.

The S & P 500 closed above 5,000 for the first time last week. However, investors need not fear as the rally could still have plenty of room to run, according to Capital Economics. However, Higgins continued: "valuation remains far short of what it reached then, suggesting that it has plenty more room to inflate." Capital Economics also noted the index's current rally is highly concentrated in mega-cap tech stocks like Apple and Microsoft . While acknowledging that it's impossible to predict bubbles, Capital Economics suggested that sustained modest earnings growth could see the rally continue through 2025.

The hedge fund that owns True Religion is exploring a sale of the Y2K-era jeans brand as it returns to growth and profitability after emerging from its second bankruptcy, CNBC has learned. It's unclear what valuation True Religion is seeking, but it could sell for a mid single digit multiple of its EBITDA, the people said. Farmstead Capital Management, True Religion's owner, has hired Baird to run the sale process. True Religion went public in 2003 and made headlines for its growth and profits. Buckley, who helmed the company during its 2000s heyday and returned in 2019, has transformed True Religion into a leaner machine.
