A version of this story appeared in the July 7 edition of CNN’s Royal News, a weekly dispatch bringing you the inside track on Britain’s royal family. Research in 2011 by Visit Britain found that around 60% of tourists to the UK are likely to visit places associated with the royal family, according to Ross Bennett-Cook, a visiting lecturer at the School of Architecture and Cities at London’s University of Westminster. While there is no more recent data on royal sites specifically, in 2022 Visit Britain found that history and heritage were the biggest pull factors for tourists. Peter Titmuss/UCG/Universal Images Group/Getty ImagesCornwall: Dear to local and international tourists alike, Cornwall, on the southwestern tip of the UK pointing out into the Atlantic Ocean, is also a special destination for the royal family. The medieval parish church of St Mary Magdalene is regularly used as a place of worship by members of the royal family and dates back to the 16th-century.

CNN —The United States is expected to announce a new military aid package for Ukraine on Friday that will include cluster munitions for the first time, defense officials have told CNN. Cluster munitions, also called cluster bombs, are canisters that carry tens to hundreds of smaller bomblets, also known as submunitions. The US has a stockpile of cluster munitions known as DPICMs, or dual-purpose improved conventional munitions, that it no longer uses after phasing them out in 2016. Yes, both the Ukrainians and the Russians have used cluster bombs since Moscow’s forces invaded in February 2022. “Any use of cluster munitions, anywhere, by anyone, must be condemned,” Carbonnier said.

Brazilian corn exports are expected to flood the global marketplace beginning in July and into the U.S. autumn harvest. China's overall corn imports are down about 10% this year, according to customs data, as buyers there await ample supplies of cheap Brazilian corn in the coming months. Total U.S. corn export sales in April and May were the lowest in at least 22 years, according to weekly USDA export sales data. The period included three weeks in which more purchases were canceled than booked, and the two worst weeks of U.S. corn exports on record. Rapid growth in Brazilian corn production offset loss of much of the corn exports from Ukraine since Russia’s invasion.

Then they got word that the top offer on a house they’d bid on in Hanover Township had fallen through, and that their second-place offer — $60,000 over the $610,000 asking price — was now sufficient. In mid-June, they closed on the four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath split-level on 1.2 acres, and a few days later they were signing up for Hanover’s Bee Meadow Pool, library cards and new driver’s licenses. “Climactically and culturally, I just didn’t see us putting down permanent roots in California,” said Mr. Trexler, who grew up in nearby Summit, N.J. (Ms. Trexler, 46, grew up in East Hanover.) “It’s been so easy to reassimilate into what we had before. The task facing anyone designing a garden: “We’re predicting the future — we’re seeing what’s not there.”That’s how Ethan Kauffman, the director (and lead soothsayer) of Stoneleigh, a public garden that opened five years ago on a historic estate in Villanova, Pa., puts it. The thing is, garden-makers also have to see what is there. In the case of the 42-acre Stoneleigh, that included seven acres of pachysandra, when Mr. Kauffman first saw the property almost seven years ago. In any context, a sea of what was once a go-to ground cover — which proved to be one of ornamental horticulture’s ubiquitous legacy invasives — would be overwhelming. But Mr. Kauffman, the former director of Moore Farms Botanical Garden, in South Carolina, was hired to fulfill a mission that makes it even more challenging.

CNN —The new tallest building in Japan is here — and the gleaming skyscraper is part of an expansive “modern urban village” in central Tokyo, years in the making. That surpasses the Abeno Harukas skyscraper in Osaka, now Japan’s second tallest building at 300 meters (984 feet). The completion of the tower, announced on Monday, brings the sprawling Azabudai Hills complex one step closer to its scheduled opening in the fall. Other countries have meanwhile raced ahead, constructing ever-taller skylines — the Azabudai Hills skyscraper is still dwarfed by towers in New York, Taiwan and Dubai. At 390 meters (nearly 1,280 feet), Torch Tower will loom above Azabudai Hills when it completes in 2027.

Dugway Proving Ground is a sprawling army base in remote Utah. Despite those incidents, the army base mostly has a good safety record, according to the Pentagon. While the remote army base used to be responsible for creating chemical weapons — and, at one point, testing them on US soldiers — it now only analyzes them. A later report found that Dugway had failed to follow standard procedures — and use enough radiation — to kill the anthrax samples. The US is destroying its arsenal of chemical weapons, such as VX gas, to meet a treaty obligation that its entire stockpile is eliminated by September 30.

Chicago corn, wheat, soybean and soybean meal futures began rallying sharply in mid-June as expanding U.S. drought and disappointing rain events hammered crop conditions. Trade sources had pegged the week’s net corn selling to be about four times heavier. Trade sources peg funds’ net selling in CBOT corn futures at 55,500 contracts over the last three sessions, and CBOT wheat selling is seen at 20,500 futures contracts. Funds were seen as net buyers of 8,000 soybean futures, 9,500 soyoil futures and 3,500 soymeal futures between Wednesday and Friday. Money managers’ weekly net selling in CBOT corn futures and options has twice exceeded 100,000 contracts this calendar year.

Nick's dilemma illustrates how the climate crisis is touching even the most mundane aspects of owning a home. That's been stagnant because of strict state regulations on what insurance companies can charge. She's one of many homeowners who for years have bought policies from companies that aren't approved by Florida's insurance regulators. Houses that would cost $1 million or more to rebuild are not covered by the state-backed Citizens Property Insurance, leaving them vulnerable to a disaster. Now he's not sure whether he — or anyone — will ever get the chance to live in his former neighborhood again.

CNN —A man from California who ran a multimillion-dollar fraud scheme where he claimed to turn cow manure into green energy has been sentenced to over six years in prison, the US attorney’s office for the Eastern District of California announced this week. Ray Brewer, 66, stole over $8.7 million from investors, court records from between March 2014 and December 2019 showed. Brewer’s investors were meant to receive tax incentives and 66% of all net profits as part of the scheme, authorities said. The image shows the fake digester picture that Ray Brewer sent to the investors he defrauded. Brewer assumed a new identity and relocated to Montana after his investors became aware of his fraud, authorities said.

This set of reports is associated with the largest average CBOT corn and soy moves of the 15 major USDA report days per year. Directionally, corn and soy futures on June 30 tend to react to acres far more often than stocks, though U.S. weather forecasts often add to the chaos. In the six sessions ended Thursday, CBOT December corn futures plunged 15.9%, June’s biggest six-session loss in at least three decades. Analysts basically nailed both corn acres and June 1 corn stocks last year, which was unprecedented, but December futures fell more than 5% on report day. An upcoming study from researchers at Stanford University offers a new way to trace far-flung smoke and pollution back to individual wildfires of origin. What’s burning in a wildfire determines what kind of pollution is in the smoke. Dr. Ford and others have studied wildfire smoke patterns, as well as the resulting exposure to particulate matter pollution. But the Stanford researchers have pulled off something new by putting the two together, she said, especially over so many years and so much land area. Aside from that, Dr. Lin thought the Stanford study would be very useful in figuring out the real human toll of wildfire smoke.

Soybeans were pegged at 87.67 million acres, up from 87.5 million in March. The soybean range of 1.5 million acres is the smallest since 2005 and below the 2.75-million average. In the last four years, corn acres also ended up out-of-range in the two years where trade guesses varied the most (2020, 2019). This year’s corn planting pace was near the longer-term average, but heavy rains were problematic in North Dakota for a second consecutive year. Analysts’ corn numbers were too high in 2021 and 2020, but they were too low in the four prior years.

HOUSTON, June 29 (Reuters) - Chevron (CVX.N) is offering to sell several oil and gas properties in New Mexico and Texas, according to marketing documents seen by Reuters, as the U.S. oil major looks to cull acreage after major shale acquisitions. The second-largest U.S. oil and gas producer last month agreed to buy shale firm PDC Energy Inc (PDCE.O) in a stock-and-debt deal worth $7.6 billion. In 2020, it acquired Noble Energy in a move that boosted its U.S. shale and international gas holdings. Chevron has been divesting properties in the Permian Basin of West Texas and New Mexico, where it is the largest publicly-traded oil and gas producer and the largest property owner with 2.2 million acres. Production at the larger parcel on offer was estimated at about 770,000 barrels of oil and gas net and the smaller parcel was estimated to be about 1,818 barrels of oil and gas equivalent (boe) per day, according to the documents.

In the best of examples, it can look to the future as well. But in the last decade or so, a small group of winemakers have focused intently on the region’s past. In short: They are producing some of the most exciting wines in the world. But the industry has been declining since the 1980s as consumers in Britain, the biggest market for inexpensive sherry, began to lose interest in those mediocre sweet wines. Many producers went out of business and the land planted to vines dwindled from roughly 70,000 acres to around 15,000.

Exxon acquired it earlier this year when it bought a neighboring Arkansas parcel of 100,000 acres from Galvanic Energy. Galvanic remains an independent, privately held company and is not affiliated with Tetra or Exxon. By partnering with Exxon, Tetra gains a large partner with capital to help it produce bromine, which is used in flame retardants, from the acreage. Exxon, meanwhile, gains access to yet another U.S. supply of lithium as the country rapidly expands its EV supply chain. Tetra had previously agreed to lease more than 27,000 acres in Arkansas to Standard Lithium (SLI.V) to produce lithium.

It took me a few minutes of research to figure out why I was losing track of the descendants of the people George Julian enslaved. If the racial cleansing of Forsyth County was mentioned, I didn’t notice. Still hopeful that I might be able to somehow identify and locate living descendants of the people my family enslaved, I flew to Georgia last November. Her father was also a butler for a wealthy white family, her mother a cook. In 1860, Osby’s ancestors were enslaved and working the fields of Forsyth County.

Satellite imagery shows that Belarus is rapidly building what appear to be temporary structures at a deserted military base, revealing a possible location for Wagner fighters who were given the option of relocating to the country after the group’s failed mutiny against President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia. The construction was first visible in satellite images taken on Monday by Planet Labs, a private company with a network of shoebox-size satellites, two days after Wagner forces suddenly stopped their march on Moscow. By Tuesday, the images showed that a sports field covering approximately eight acres within the gated military facility had been transformed, packed with at least six rows of what appear to be temporary structures, like large tents. The satellite imagery also shows similar construction in open areas next to the sports field.
