REUTERS/Jane RosenbergWASHINGTON, Sept 22 (Reuters) - A New Jersey man, who was accused of being a Nazi sympathizer and in May was found guilty of charges related to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, was sentenced to four years in prison on Thursday, the Justice Department said. Timothy Hale-Cusanelli, 32, of Colts Neck, New Jersey, was sentenced in the District of Columbia on felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from his actions during the Capitol attack, the Justice Department said in a statement. An informant told investigators that Hale-Cusanelli was "an avowed white supremacist and Nazi sympathizer" who had posted online videos espousing extreme political opinions, the Justice Department had alleged earlier in court filings. The Justice Department says it has arrested more than 870 people for crimes related to the breach of the Capitol, including over 265 who were charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement.

Russian President Vladimir Putin could use cryptocurrencies to evade U.S. and other sanctions launched against the Kremlin for its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, a Treasury official told lawmakers Tuesday. Warren said she'd been concerned about the possibility of cryptocurrency being used by Russian elites to bypass sanctions since the country invaded in February. The Treasury Department has already identified Russian entities attempting to circumvent sanctions with crypto. Treasury issued its first-ever sanctions on these "mixers" in May and sanctioned another, "Tornado Cash," in August. Coinbase's chief legal officer, Paul Grewal, told CNBC that the sanctions set "a dangerous precedent," but Rosenberg called them effective.
REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File PhotoWASHINGTON, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Democratic and Republican senators urged U.S. President Joe Biden's administration on Tuesday to impose secondary sanctions on international banks to strengthen a price cap G7 countries plan to impose on Russian oil over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. The Biden administration has been reluctant to impose secondary sanctions over concerns that they could complicate relations with importers of Russia oil like China and India. The Group of Seven announced the price cap plan this month to limit Russia's lucrative oil export revenue in the wake of the invasion. "And secondly, by keeping Russian oil in the market at lower prices, it will reduce the potential for price spikes in the market." Also at the hearing, Democratic Senator Kyrsten Sinema asked Rosenberg what Washington can do to address the blending of Russian oil by the country's producers with crude from other nations to circumvent sanctions.

DeSantis claimed credit for a pair of chartered flights on Wednesday that carried around 50 migrants to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, as part of a broader Republican effort to shift responsibility for border crossers to Democratic leaders. "There may be more flights, there may be buses," he said to cheers and applause from backers in the crowd. The state paid $615,000 to Vertol Systems Company Inc, an aviation business, on Sept. 8 as part of a "relocation program of unauthorized aliens," Florida state data showed. The flights to Martha's Vineyard follow a busing effort by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, another Republican, that has sent more than 10,000 migrants to the Democrat-controlled cities of Washington, New York and Chicago since April. The Republican governor of Arizona also has sent more than 1,800 migrants to Washington.

The White House struck a tentative deal Thursday to avoid a rail strike that risked major disruptions across the United States, with freight workers securing a key demand. Pandemic pressures, including those that scrambled supply chains, worked in freight workers’ favor, logistics experts said. A rail strike would dent many industries, as about 40% of goods that are shipped long-distance rely on the nation’s rail system. Rail workers often are on-call 24/7 year-round and are allotted time off only after being called to a number of consecutive on-call shifts. A labor union source told NBC News that getting rail carriers to negotiate on attendance policies was a major breakthrough.

A judge's order approving a special master to review documents the FBI took from former President Donald Trump's Florida home is a deeply flawed and unworkable mess, legal experts told NBC News on Tuesday. Rosenzweig agreed, calling it "absurd" that a special master should be searching out potential executive privilege issues. "I don't know how a special master would proceed, which means inevitable delay and dispute," he said. "I don’t think the appointment of a special master is going to hold up. Saltzburg, who has worked as a special master, said the reason judges generally want special masters "is they want a review to be done quickly and thoroughly, and they don’t have the time to do it themselves."
