CNN —The USS Helena, a fast-attack nuclear submarine, surfaced in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a day after Russian naval forces arrived in Havana to conduct drills with the island nation, a Russian ally. Navy destroyers, as well as P-8 submarine hunting aircraft, tracked the movements of the Russian ships as they made their way south off the east coast of the United States. Major League Baseball said Friday night it has disciplined umpire Pat Hoberg for violating the league’s gambling rules, and that he is being held out of games during this season while an appeal is considered. Multiple players have been punished for gambling violations, including Tucupita Marcano, who got a lifetime ban for betting on baseball. Now, an umpire has been punished, with Hoberg becoming the only known umpire in recent history to have been disciplined for a matter related to gambling. “During this year’s Spring Training, Major League Baseball commenced an investigation regarding a potential violation of MLB’s sports betting policies by Umpire Pat Hoberg,” MLB said in a statement. CNN —British distance runner Jessica Warner-Judd says that she has provisionally been diagnosed with a form of epilepsy after collapsing mid-race at the European Athletics Championships. Warner-Judd was competing in the final of the women’s 10,000 meters in Rome when she had a seizure with about 600 meters left until the finish. “From getting the bus to the warm up track, I can’t explain it – something felt off,” Warner-Judd wrote in the post. “It has been an incredibly tough couple of months and has culminated in me being provisionally diagnosed with focal epilepsy,” she added. The 29-year-old, who placed eighth at last year’s world championships, thanked British Athletics and her friends and family for their support over the past few months.

Similar scenes have played out across New York City as a task force led by the Sheriff’s Office has flexed its new emergency powers to lock down unlicensed cannabis shops, which officials recently estimated outnumbered licensed retailers in the city by about 2,900 to 62. From May 7 to June 3, inspection teams closed 311 stores, seized $10.4 million worth of products and issued $23.4 million in fines, according to the mayor’s office. An additional 325 shops were put on notice. Previously, shuttered stores could reopen within hours of inspections while officials sought court orders to shut them down permanently. But changes enacted in this year’s state budget and the city code have given the Sheriff’s Office the power to declare the shops an imminent threat to the public and close them immediately for up to a year.

Representative Kelly Armstrong won the Republican nomination for governor of North Dakota, The Associated Press said on Tuesday, defeating the state’s lieutenant governor, Tammy Miller, and positioning himself as the strong favorite in the general election. The primary featured two Republicans who are well known in the state and whose platforms shared many similarities. Mr. Armstrong, a lawyer and a former state Republican Party chairman, was elected to Congress in 2018 from North Dakota’s lone House district. Ms. Miller, an accountant and businesswoman, was appointed as lieutenant governor last year after working as Gov. After failing to gain traction in the Republican presidential primary, he announced in January that he would not seek another four years as governor.

Here are the primaries to keep an eye on:Nancy Mace, a Trump vice-presidential contender, will be on the ballot in South Carolina. Representative Nancy Mace, Republican of South Carolina, who is a contender to be Mr. Trump’s running mate, faces a primary opponent backed by former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who opposes her because she voted to oust him from the speakership last year. The primary, in the state’s First Congressional District, comes just days after the House Ethics Committee started looking into Ms. Mace’s use of a congressional reimbursement program. To the Editor:Re “‘Selling Out’ Isn’t an Insult to Gen Z” (Sunday Business, May 26):Francesca Mari captures the zeitgeist that we in the social sector are battling: Even as the world’s challenges are more visible than ever, the percentage of graduates putting their full-time energy toward tackling them isn’t growing. Not only do we need this generation tackling world challenges as soon as possible, but as Ms. Mari’s reporting points out, graduates’ early destinations shape the people they become. Research about the impact of the Teach for All network’s two-year teaching commitments shows dramatic effects on participants’ beliefs about the roots of inequity and how to address it. Before we blame the young people, let’s consider what we’re doing as a society to foster their sense of agency and intentionality about where to put their time and energy. As parents, influencers and educators, we need to foster choices that will shape the future we collectively want to see.

New York CNN —Shawn Fain, who led the United Auto Workers union in its strike against all three unionized American automakers last fall, is under investigation by a federal monitor overseeing the union. It dredges up past union corruption issues that sent previous union officials to prison, an issue that helped Fain win a narrow upset victory to lead the union last year. Fain was a guest of President Joe Biden at the State of the Union speech, where Biden recognized and praised him. Biden also joined Fain on the picket line during last year’s auto strike, the first sitting president to visit a picket line. Fain, a former critic of both former President Donald Trump and the Biden administration, has become a vocal supporter of Biden, who has been endorsed by the UAW.

CNN —The second-largest lottery prize ever won in Michigan has just been claimed after a New Year’s Day drawing – solving a six-month mystery. The Michigan Lottery announced a group called The Breakfast Club as the winner of an $842 million Powerball jackpot. An attorney representing the lottery club spoke on their behalf but didn’t say how many members are part of the group. “The club members have felt many emotions since realizing their ticket was the one,” the group’s attorney said. The Breakfast Club members are recipients of the sixth-largest Powerball prize ever won.

The organization said that to come back Chestnut must renounce deals with brands that rival Nathan’s. During a few weeks each year or so, an international team of scientists spends long days at sea searching for the most endangered marine mammal on Earth: the vaquita porpoise. Results from this year’s survey, issued on Tuesday, were disappointing: Researchers estimate they saw six to eight individual vaquitas there, the lowest result ever recorded. Since at least 2019, the visual surveys have focused on one zone where acoustic monitoring and other research has suggested the remaining animals congregate. “It’s worrisome,” said Barbara Taylor, a longtime vaquita researcher who led the survey. “We just need to go out and find out whether the vaquitas have moved someplace else and adapt the management accordingly.”
