Facing off at WJW Fox 8 Studios in Cleveland, businessman Bernie Moreno, Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose and state Sen. Matt Dolan generally agreed on a few issues. They declined to say anything critical of former President Donald Trump, who has endorsed Moreno, and called for fully securing the southern U.S. border. LaRose called earlier Monday for Democratic President Joe Biden to deploy three military divisions to the border, which Dolan said was irresponsible. “We need to work with the Mexican government, we need to be tough with the Mexican government,” he said. Moreno, pointing to Dolan, replied: “If you want Liz Cheney to represent you in the United States Senate from Ohio, here's your choice, because that's where his position comes from.

Takeaways from Election Day 2023 in America

Here are the key election night takeaways on a strong night for Democrats:As Ohio goes, so goes the nation? Tuesday night’s election results probably won’t change the equation for Biden in 2024, given Ohio’s recent presidential electoral history. Other state Republican parties might not be so lucky. Andy Beshear won a second term on Tuesday in a state that Trump carried by more than 25 points in 2020. Endorsed by Trump but often described as McConnell’s protégé, Daniel Cameron’s defeat will stir a lot of finger-pointing within the Republican Party.

The prize up for grabs Saturday would also be the fifth largest US lottery jackpot, Powerball says. Powerball has had no grand prize winner since July 19, when a single ticket sold in California won a jackpot worth $1.08 billion. Wednesday’s Powerball drawing was the 33rd consecutive with no jackpot winner. The largest Powerball jackpot ever was a $2.04 billion prize, won by a lucky sole ticket in November 2022.

is leading Democrats by over 20 points on “dealing with the economy.” So how is Joe Biden even still in this race? Second, the strongest argument for these other candidates was that Trump couldn’t beat Biden. But that’s becoming a harder and harder case to make — more because of Biden than Trump. And if Trump isn’t the nominee, he’ll quite possibly be acting to undermine whoever is the G.O.P. Donald Trump may not be on the stage for tonight’s Republican primary debate, but at least eight other candidates will still have to contend with his presence — and his lead in the polls. The Opinion columnist Michelle Goldberg argues that tonight is an opportunity for Trump’s opponents to convince Republican voters that they can be as dominant as the former president, but without the legal baggage. The question remains, though: Will the Republican base buy it? (A full transcript of this audio essay will be available midday on the Times website.)
