Public broadcaster NHK has projected the ruling bloc would secure 214 seats, with just one of the total 465 seats undeclared. The opposition Constitutional Democratic Party and the Democratic Party for the People have made significant gains in this election.

It’s still unclear if his ruling coalition with the junior partner Komeito can retain a majority. Ishiba has set a goal of retaining a majority of 233 seats for the ruling coalition between the LDP and its Buddhist-backed Komeito. But analysts say Ishiba’s LDP was expected to remain the top party in Japan’s parliament as voters are skeptical about the opposition’s ability and inexperience. There could be regrouping attempts among opposition parties to decide whether to cooperate among themselves or join the ruling coalition, political watchers say. Ishiba is expected to last at least until the ruling bloc approves key budget plans at the end of December.

BROOKS/AFP via Getty Images)Japan's voters decide the fate of Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's government on Sunday in an election expected to punish his coalition over a funding scandal and inflation, potentially ending a decade of dominance for his Liberal Democratic Party. Political wrangling could roil markets and be a headache for the Bank of Japan, if Ishiba chooses a partner that favours maintaining near-zero interest rates when the central bank wants to gradually raise them. "That's basically the scenario for 'sell Japan'," as investors ponder how the outcome could affect fiscal and monetary policy, said Naka Matsuzawa, chief macro strategist at Nomura Securities.

“It makes me excited as one citizen of the nation, too, more than for usual elections,” she said. Going into the election, the Liberal Democrats still commanded the highest level of support, with just over 31 percent of voters endorsing the party in a poll by NHK, the public broadcaster. The Constitutional Democrats received support from less than 10 percent of voters surveyed. Seven disparate opposition parties came together to form a government, but it collapsed within just 11 months. In 2009, the Democratic Party of Japan won in a landslide victory as voters sought to punish the Liberal Democrats for failing to resuscitate the moribund economy.

But artist Maurizio Cattelan’s viral creation, titled “Comedian,” may yet prove a sound investment: On Friday, auction house Sotheby’s announced that one of the artwork’s three “editions” is going back on sale — this time with an estimate of $1 million to $1.5 million. “‘Comedian’ is a conceptual artwork, and the actual physical materials are replaced with every installation,” an auction spokesperson said via email. The Miami installation was eventually removed amid public safety concerns, but all three editions were sold at the fair. In interviews given since the Miami installation, Cattelan has described “Comedian” as a work of commentary. An installation shot of "Comedian" released by Sotheby's auction house ahead of the sale.

Asia-Pacific markets were mixed on Friday, with investors awaiting Japan's general election over the weekend. Japan also released its October inflation numbers for the capital city of Tokyo on Friday, its last key economic data before the election. The city's headline inflation rate fell to 1.8% in October from 2.2% the month before, with core inflation — which strips out prices of fresh food — also coming in at 1.8%, down from 2%. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the core inflation rate in Tokyo to slow to 1.7% in October.

A report from travel news site Skift shows that seven major airlines have retreated from the country in the past four months. Longer flights require more fuel, which make flights more expensive. "Indeed U.S. carriers are making hard but very commercial decisions to drop Chinese services and redeploy the aircraft elsewhere," he said. A queue of people forms outside a money changer (L) as people wait to buy and sell the Japanese yen against foreign currency, along a street in central Tokyo on April 29, 2024. In the past, weakness in the Japanese currency has been attributed to the difference between the U.S. and Japanese interest rates as lower rates tend to pressure currencies, while higher rates lift them up. Japan had negative rates for about eight years, keeping it's currency weak compared to the dollar. The Japanese yen is hovering near three-month lows against the U.S. dollar, after hitting 153.18 late Wednesday. "The annualised 1-month deposit rate for yen is +0.03%, while it is 4.76% for the U.S. dollar.

Take Los Angeles, where about three-quarters of residential-zoned land in 2021 was zoned exclusively for developing single-family housing. This country needs to build more homes, but there's no reason all those new homes need to look the same. Tokyo has homes in all shapes and sizes: detached single-family homes, attached row houses, small apartment buildings, midsize apartment buildings, and colossal residential high-rises. Allow apartment buildings with one staircase: Making it legal to build more apartment buildings with only one staircase would substantially reduce construction costs and allow for apartment buildings to be built on smaller lots. People who really like single-family homes should still have access to single-family homes.

The central bank of the People's Republic of China is responsible for formulating and implementing monetary policies, preventing and defusing financial risks and maintaining financial stability. Asia-Pacific markets were mixed Monday as traders awaited China's loan prime rate announcement, with focus also on Japan's general election at the end of this week. "Data aside, it is worth monitoring if there are potential further government ministry briefings or a potential announcement of the timing for the National People's Congress meeting in the week ahead, as stimulus rollout remains a major theme for markets," ING said.
