Widespread skepticism about Richardson’s death underscores deep-seated distrust of local law enforcement in Colbert County. A spokesperson for the FBI’s field office in Birmingham confirmed the FBI is aware of Dennoriss Richardson’s death and is reviewing the allegations of criminal misconduct. Marvin Long, a 57-year-old Black man and lifelong Colbert County resident, knew Dennoriss Richardson’s family well growing up. He shares the skepticism about the suicide ruling and said Richardson’s death has intensified his fear of retaliation. Dennoriss Richardson pleaded guilty to drug possession in 2006 and was sentenced to five years in prison.

Last week, a video popped up on social media falsely claiming to show someone ripping up ballots in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Instead of relying on flagging suspected foreign disinformation posts to social media companies, U.S. authorities are declassifying information about foreign election interference in an unprecedented way, seizing web domains and issuing indictments that have exposed the mechanics of Russian and Iranian information warfare, officials and researchers said. U.S. intelligence officials later said Russian “influence actors” were behind the false story. And social media companies, under intense legal and political pressure from Republican critics, have scaled back or scrapped teams in recent years that used to take down inflammatory or conspiratorial content. The combination of homegrown falsehoods about “stolen” election conspiracies, surging foreign disinformation campaigns and a laissez-faire approach by tech firms threatens to undermine the foundations of American democracy, experts and lawmakers said.

New York City bar PubKey made a name for itself within the crypto community as a meeting place for Bitcoin enthusiasts, advocates and industry members. In the 2024 election, its owners are hoping the bar will play a pivotal role for political candidates looking to reach crypto-focused voters. Former President Donald Trump, who touts himself as a pro-crypto presidential candidate, made a campaign stop to buy burgers in bitcoin and speak with members of the community. PubKey also extended an invitation to Vice President Kamala Harris, who recently said she would support innovation in digital assets. Watch the video above to learn how PubKey hopes to court presidential candidates and reach crypto voters.

But it isn’t always a deterrent – Combs’ former girlfriend Cassie Ventura filed a lawsuit accusing Combs of abuse last November. Judges weigh the John or Jane Does’ privacy rights against the Constitution’s presumption of open courts and the defendant’s rights to defend themselves. It is also usually permitted when a John or Jane Doe can establish with medical documentation that they will suffer harm. A New York state judge this week ordered hearings to consider whether to allow numerous John Doe lawsuit against Combs to proceed anonymously. A Jane Doe sued Weinstein on August 2020, alleging he raped her during the Cannes Film Festival in 2007 when she was 22.

LOS ANGELES — California and Nevada voters are weighing whether to repeal legal loopholes in their state constitutions that allow slavery and involuntary servitude to be used as criminal punishment. California and Nevada would join a growing national trend that started with voters in Colorado repealing involuntary servitude in 2018. Slavery and involuntary servitude were banned nationally by the 13th Amendment with one exception — as punishment for a crime. In 2016, Shawna Lynn Jones became the first incarcerated woman to die while fighting a fire in California, according to the state corrections department. "If it means we have to come back to California voters in two years or four years, then that's what we'll do," Nuñez said.

A woman who anonymously sued Sean “Diddy” Combs this month for rape must reveal her name or her lawsuit will be tossed out, a judge has ruled. The complaint also said that Combs has had no contact with Doe in the years since, and noted that Combs is currently detained. The complaint was filed against Sean Combs, several of his businesses, including his label Bad Boy Records LLC, and Marriott International. He allegedly ordered Doe's friend to perform oral sex “or else he would have them both killed,” and raped Doe, according to the filing. Rent costs have long weighed on lower-income households — now it’s coming for the middle class. A cost-burdened household is defined as one paying 30% or more of pretax income on rent and housing costs. This figure is widely used as a threshold for affordability: the Census Bureau measures housing costs against it, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development has used it for decades. While nearly 40% of middle-class renters are burdened by costs nationwide, in Tennessee that figure is 37%, placing it among the upper half of states with the largest share of cost-burdened middle-class renters. The growing pressure on middle-class renters may finally be spurring political action.

As storms and other natural disasters become more destructive, home insurance providers are raising rates or pulling out of certain states altogether, according to insurance company Insurify. Insurance companies in turn are raising prices to cover the higher costs of covering claims and reinsurance, or insurance for insurance companies. AdvertisementAlso important to note is that flood coverage often isn't included in standard homeowners insurance policies. Stephanie purchased flood insurance in addition to her regular homeowners insurance when she purchased a home. For those considering buying a home in a state with high levels of climate risk, taking these precautions during the homebuying process can help you protect your investment.

“I have a plan and strategy,” Ivan Raiklin, a former Green Beret and political operative who has close ties to associates of Trump, told a group of Pennsylvania activists earlier this month. Four years ago, Trump’s unsuccessful efforts to overturn his loss to President Joe Biden didn’t truly materialize until after the election. Brian Snyder/ReutersBut this time around, MAGA activists have been planning to undermine a potential Harris victory well in advance of the election, with some even arguing that state legislators should simply ignore the election results and award electoral votes to Trump by default. “Those looking to overturn the election are way ahead of where they were in 2020,” said Harris. Trump himself has echoed some of the conspiracy theories pushed by his supporters, suggesting that election fraud is rampant in 2024.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued an El Paso doctor on Tuesday, accusing him of providing transition-related medical care to nearly two dozen minors in violation of state law. Texas enacted a law, Senate Bill 14, last year banning gender-affirming care for anyone under 18. Laws restricting access to transition-related care for minors exist in 26 states, according to the Movement Advancement Project, an LGBTQ think tank. The Texas lawsuits come just ahead of the presidential election, where transition-related care has become somewhat of a flashpoint. NBC News asked Harris about her position on gender-affirming care last week.

CNN —A federal judge said a woman who accused Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexually assaulting her cannot proceed with her lawsuit under a pseudonym after finding the rapper has a right to defend himself. Judge Vyskocil ruled the woman has to file the lawsuit under her name by November 13 or the lawsuit will be dismissed. In the lawsuit, the judge notes there is no allegation that Combs threatened this woman about going public with her allegations. “The Court appreciates that Combs is a public figure and, therefore, Plaintiff is likely to face public scrutiny if she proceeds in her own name. Allred, a three-term Dallas congressman, is out to unseat Cruz in the Republican stronghold of Texas. While Cruz has adopted the slogan “Keep Texas, Texas,” Allred is hoping to lure voters into a new way of leadership, he says, one that focuses on reaching across the aisle and getting to the bottom of hot-button issues like abortion, the border and the economy. The close Senate race is a nod to the high stakes of the presidential battle between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. Texas may be Democrats’ best chance to maintain control of the Senate, with some polls showing Cruz lead within the margin of error.
