Vibrio vulnificus is one of the bacteria that can cause what’s commonly known as a flesh-eating infection. Vibrio vulnificus infection is the leading cause of death related to eating seafood in the United States. With skin infections, a doctor will first take samples from the infected area to determine if Vibrio vulnificus is what’s causing the problem. Up to 50% of Vibrio vulnificus infections don’t respond to certain antibiotics anymore, studies show.

Gavin Newsom signed a bill Thursday that aims to legally protect transgender youths and their parents if they flee conservative states that have restricted access to gender-affirming care. The bill seeks to “offer refuge” to trans minors and their families “if they’re being criminalized in their home states,” state Sen. Scott Wiener, who introduced the bill, said on Twitter after Newsom signed it. Kay Ivey signed a bill that makes it a felony for medical professionals to provide gender-affirming medical care to people under 19. “We believe that no one should be prosecuted or persecuted for getting the care they need — including gender-affirming care,” Newsom said in a statement after signing the measure. It prohibits California health care providers from releasing medical information in relation to other states’ laws prohibiting gender-affirming care for minors.

A federal appeals court dismissed the National Rifle Association’s lawsuit against a former New York state official who urged banks and insurance companies to reconsider working with the organization and other gun rights’ groups after the Parkland school shooting. The lawsuit, first filed in 2018, alleged that Maria Vullo , then superintendent of the state’s Department of Financial Services, used her regulatory power to threaten business partners of the NRA and coerce them into not working with the organization.

John Davis, 54 years old, the executive director of the state’s Department of Human Services from 2016 to 2019, agreed in a plea deal filed with the court to fully cooperate with federal and state prosecutors as they continue probes into how the state department doled out tens of millions of federal dollars.

Single tax filers qualify for funds up to $250, heads of household up to $375 and couples filing jointly up to $500. While most of the rebate checks from earlier this year have been mailed out already, the newer bonus checks are currently being processed. To receive the rebates, residents must file their 2020 and 2021 tax returns by Dec. 31, 2022. Charlie Baker announced that tax rebate checks will be sent to full-year residents who file a 2021 tax return on or before Oct. 17, 2022. No action is needed, as residents receive these payments automatically by direct deposit or check.
