After the Philadelphia Eagles were defeated 32-21 by the Washington Commanders on Monday night, no undefeated teams remain in the NFL. Quarterback Jalen Hurts threw an interception – as well as two touchdowns – and the Eagles lost three fumbles as Philly’s self-inflicted mistakes stunted potential scoring drives. The Eagles twice led by a touchdown during the first half, but – thanks to Hurts’ interception and the gumption of the Commanders’ offense – Washington held a 20-14 lead at halftime. Both of the Commanders’ running backs – Brian Robinson Jr. and Antonio Gibson – had first half touchdowns as a widely expected Eagles victory turned sour. Wide receiver Terry McLaurin was the star of the evening for the Commanders, as he finished with eight receptions for 128 yards.
Amid growing economic uncertainty, layoffs in the technology industry, both for public companies and for startups, have been escalating this Fall. While plenty of tech companies were still flying high in early 2022, Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February accelerated global economic turmoil. More than 17,000 tech workers lost their jobs in both May and June, while July and August saw another 29,000 cuts, according to layoff tracker Layoffs.fyi. Davis, the VC at Interplay, explained that cost-cutting and layoffs are happening across the board, not just in the tech industry. But public tech companies as well as early- and growth-stage startups will face additional challenges, he said.
‘Good Night Oppy’ Review: Robots on Mars

An entire generation has grown up understanding that having access to high-quality images from the surface of Mars is routine. The rousing documentary “Good Night Oppy” seeks to restore a proper measure of wonder to the spectacularly effective deployment of exploration rovers to the surface of a once-unreachable planet. “Good Night Oppy,” which is now in theaters ahead of a Nov. 23 release on Prime Video, is directed in a kid-friendly way by Ryan White , who largely leaves technical and scientific information to the side and concentrates on anthropomorphizing the two ingeniously engineered robotic machines, Spirit and Opportunity, that were flung into space in 2003 to explore the Red Planet. The twin rovers were solar-powered, but because of the inevitable accumulation of dust on their panels were expected to go defunct for lack of power in 90 “sols”—the scientists’ term for Martian days. Instead, Spirit endured more than six years, while her plucky sister Opportunity, or “Oppy,” kept sending the astronomic equivalent of letters home to her parents for nearly 15.
CNN —Philadelphia had waited 4,746 days to host a World Series game and it was forced to wait another day when Monday night’s game was postponed due to rain. But its patience was rewarded on Tuesday as the Philadelphia Phillies took a 2-1 lead in the World Series, using the long ball to power their way to a 7-0 win against the Houston Astros in Game 3. “It was kind of mind-boggling because he doesn’t give up homers,” Astros coach Dusty Baker said afterwards. Elsa/Getty ImagesThen, Alec Bohm, who hit the 1,000th home run in World Series history, and Brandon Marsh added their own homers in the second to give the Phillies a 4-0 lead. Game 4 of the best-of-seven series is Wednesday night in Philadelphia.
CNN —The 2022 World Series is a classic case of overwhelming favorite against plucky underdog. The Astros’ only previous World Series win came when they defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2017. “It is the World Series, it’s a big stage, but they have been loose the entire time through this whole process. The Philadelphia Phillies last won the World Series in 2008. Further back in 1929, the Philadelphia Athletics’ World Series win was followed by the Wall Street Crash.
The NBA’s Big Winner May Be a Big Loser

The 2022-23 NBA season is here, and you haven’t even figured out if your favorite NFL team is a disaster or not! (If it’s the Carolina Panthers, yes, disaster, sorry.) Let’s address some early basketball questions:Is this finally the year for the Minnesota Timberwolves? This comes from my Wolves-suffering editor, who is prone to excitedly waving his arms and walking up to strangers to ask the same question. The plucky and likable Wolves made the playoffs last season, and this summer traded away beloved imp Pat Beverley and half of the Mall of America to land defensive pillar Rudy Golbert, but don’t start making Minneapolis hotel reservations for June.
Now 76 and living in Oregon, Mountain Girl has gave us an exclusive look at her memoir. Altamont, the free concert that Mountain Girl and Jerry Garcia helped organized, was meant to revive the spirit of the Sixties. Today, 60 years since she took that ride with Neal Cassady, Mountain Girl is still forging her own path. Before I leave Kesey's farm, Mountain Girl and I walk outside to the old brown barn where Furthur now rests. But for Mountain Girl, it lives forever, an emblem of everything her generation believed in, and all that they achieved.
