For instance, the U.S. has blocked shipments of cotton coming from China, a top manufacturer of popular clothing brands, because it was produced by forced or prison labor. While prison labor seeps into the supply chains of some companies through third-party suppliers without them knowing, others buy direct. Cargill acknowledged buying goods from prison farms in Tennessee, Arkansas and Ohio, saying they constituted only a small fraction of the company’s overall volume. For instance, about a dozen state prison farms, including operations in Texas, Virginia, Kentucky and Montana, have sold more than $60 million worth of cattle since 2018. “What for?”FOLLOWING THE MONEYThe business of prison labor is so vast and convoluted that tracing the money can be challenging.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Lev Rubinstein, a Russian poet known for his conceptual art work subverting traditional Soviet era forms, died on Sunday, his daughter Maria said on Sunday. "My papa, Lev Rubinstein, died today," she wrote on her blog. Rubinstein, who was 76 years old, was hit by a car in Moscow on Jan 8 and spent several days in a coma before succumbing to his injuries. Rubinstein began his literary career in the 1960s, and rose to prominence as a founder and leader of the Moscow Conceptualist school of artists and poets. In recent years, he had been a defender of Russia's embattled opposition, taking public stances against the Kremlin's crackdown on LGBT rights, and, since 2014, its military interventions in Ukraine.

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Colombia's government announced Thursday that the father of Liverpool striker Luis Díaz was released, 12 days after his kidnapping in northern Colombia by members of the guerrilla group National Liberation Army, or ELN. The release was announced by the government's delegation that currently is in peace negotiations with the ELN. Luis Manuel Díaz’s kidnapping on Oct. 28 in the small town of Barrancas quickly drew international attention. But Colombia’s government announced last week that it had information that Díaz was kidnapped by an ELN unit. The ELN later acknowledged the kidnapping, saying it was a mistake and that the group’s top leadership had ordered the elder Díaz’s release.

The parents of baby Indi Gregory, who has a rare metabolic disorder known as mitochondrial disease, have fought legal battles in a bid to continue life support for their child. The legal tussle is the latest in a series of similar cases in Britain that saw doctors and parents spar over the treatment of terminally ill children and the respective rights and responsibilities of parents and medical professionals. The campaign group Christian Concern, which is supporting Indi’s parents, said the parents plan to appeal the ruling. The fatal disease has caused progressive brain damage in baby Indi, leaving her totally dependent on life support, according to evidence presented to the High Court in London. Instead, he said continuation of treatment would “perpetuate a high level of pain and suffering” for the baby.

CNN —Liverpool player Luis Díaz has pleaded for his kidnapped father to be released back to his family in Colombia. Díaz made the appeal hours after coming on as a substitute and scoring a late equalizer during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Luton Town on Sunday. I beg that they [the ELN] release him immediately, respecting his integrity and ending this painful wait as soon as possible. A major police and military search operation for Díaz’s father is ongoing. The 26-year-old forward traveled back to Colombia after his parents’ kidnapping and returned to the UK ahead of Liverpool’s game against Luton.

ROME (AP) — An 8-month-old terminally ill British girl was granted Italian citizenship Monday after a court in Britain upheld rulings authorizing the withdrawal of life-supporting invasive treatment. Baby Indi Gregory's situation is the latest in a series of cases in Britain in which doctors and parents have sparred over the treatment of terminally ill children. The child’s family hopes the Italian government's decision will add heft to their fight to allow her to be transferred to Italy. Peel ruled that nothing had changed since an earlier ruling that authorized the withdrawal of life-supporting invasive treatment. In addition, it is possible that transferring Indi to Rome would increase her “distress and suffering,” Peel said.

When James and Johanna Windon launched Buena Papa two years ago, they had just $18 in their bank account. Now, they bring in millions of dollars in annual revenue across three North Carolina restaurant locations, they said on Friday's episode of ABC's "Shark Tank" — during which they landed a $400,000 investment offer from millionaire entrepreneur Robert Herjavec. Despite no prior restaurant experience, the pair "invested our life savings [of] $40,000," leaving just $18 behind, James said. Mark Cuban opted out, citing the difficulty of simultaneously operating restaurant locations and overseeing any number of franchisees. That left Robert Herjavec, who offered the Windons $400,000 for 20% of Buena Papa.
