CNN —Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy said the threat social media poses to children requires urgent action, and he demanded Congress to put a label on the apps as it does with cigarettes and alcohol. Teens spend nearly five hours a day on social media apps, according to a Gallup poll. Drew Angerer/Getty Images North America/Getty Images“It is time to require a surgeon general’s warning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents,” Murthy said. Congress has long chastised social media companies, claiming they pose harm to children. And Murthy urged parents to restrict children’s use of social media until they graduate from middle school.

“From 1 year of age to 6 years of age, kids change a lot. Almost half reported their child leaving their bed and moving to the parent’s bed some or most nights, while 1 in 3 parents said their child often or occasionally insists that they stay in the room until the child falls asleep. The most important factor in getting kids to bed is consistency and sticking with a bedtime routine, Mott Poll co-director Clark said. Ninety percent of polled parents reported having an established and consistent bedtime routine. It’s common for young children to experience sleep issues, especially as preschool-age children begin to reduce or drop naptime, Hartstein said.

Key parts of a Florida law that bans gender transition care for minors and imposes hurdles on adults seeking transition care are unconstitutional, a federal judge ruled on Tuesday. Judge Robert L. Hinkle of Federal District Court in Tallahassee sided with advocacy groups and three families who had said that the law stripped them of parents’ rights to make medical decisions for their transgender children. In a 105-page order, Judge Hinkle said that “gender identity is real” and that a “widely accepted standard of care” includes puberty blockers and hormone treatments that Florida unlawfully banned. “The state of Florida can regulate as needed but cannot flatly deny transgender individuals safe and effective medical treatment — treatment with medications routinely provided to others with the state’s full approval so long as the purpose is not to support the patient’s transgender identity,” Judge Hinkle wrote.

CNN —Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Sunday pushed back on criticism of President Joe Biden’s new executive action restricting asylum while calling on Congress to take action on the border. Still, Mayorkas insisted the restrictions on asylum would reduce the number of people who try to cross the border. “The bipartisan deal was rejected once, we pressed forward again. And it requires the cooperation of other countries which we have secured.”But Mayorkas again called on Congress to do more. “Former President Trump tried to implement a Muslim ban, a ban on entry to this country explicitly based on one religion.

The worst of inflation might be in the rear-view mirror, but the share of Americans who say they're "doing OK financially" has hit a four-year low. Among all U.S. adults, 72% say they were "doing OK" in 2023 — the lowest percentage since April 2020, according to an annual Federal Reserve survey released Tuesday. The sentiment has been trending down since 2021, when it was 78%. Notably, the share of parents with kids who say they are doing OK dropped from 69% in 2022 to 64% in 2023. A lot of that has to do with inflation, as 35% of the 11,400 survey respondents say rising prices were the "main financial challenge" in 2023, the highest of all self-reported answers, including retirement savings and debt.

The movement of parents concerned by their kids' smartphone use just gained an unlikely disciple: socialite and DJ Paris Hilton. Hilton isn't alone in thinking smartphones can cause damage to young kids. "The biggest effects of social media happened during puberty, especially early puberty," he says. No social media before age 16. "There's no clear evidence that giving children access to social media early is better able to prepare them for adulthood later on," Rausch says.

The overwhelming and overriding culprit of my students' college failures was their parents. CNN —The Supreme Court on Monday declined to review an appeal from a group of parents who claimed their suburban Washington-area school district was hiding transgender support plans involving their children. It’s the latest in a series of cases where the high court has dodged the issue of transgender rights at school – often leaving in place lower court rulings that sided with trans students. The appeals court said that the parents had not established that they were injured in a way that allowed them to sue. Three years ago, the Supreme Court declined to take up an appeal from a Virginia school district about whether schools may ban transgender students from using a bathroom that reflects their gender identity. Last year, the court denied West Virginia’s request to let it enforce a state law that bans transgender women and girls from participating on public school sports teams.

A lot of parents think they don't need to talk to their kids about porn, but as an adult filmmaker, I never had that option. Talking to children about porn isn't just important for parents in the adult entertainment industry, though. We can't assume our kids have not seen porn. That's why I created the nonprofit The Porn Conversation to give families tools to help them talk with kids about porn literacy. Pointing out the things we see and questioning them helps children build the skills they'll need to understand porn.

I was stuck in the revolving door of work and parenting, and nothing about my personal life was Instagram-worthy. Somewhere between 2006 and now, parenting became a crash course in achievement, with social media grading us at every turn. Children and parents alike have unknowingly entered a relentless pressure cooker under the constant spotlight of social media. These can result in a cycle of increased mental health issues for both the parent and the child. There are two social media tricks that can be life-changing for adults: Mute accounts (you’re the only one who will know!)

According to research published last year by Pew Research Center, men who have children out-earn childless men. Lauren Smith Brody, founder of The Fifth Trimester, told me the survey results are consistent with what she has seen in her work coaching moms. As moms, many of us have to become expert at interviewing and hiring in order to find quality childcare providers. Of course, if only a few women add the title of mom to their resumes, they might be discounted by ignorant employers.

But, the often-invisible work of parenting can take just as much of a toll on one's mental health as a paid job. In fact, 62% of parents feel burned out by their responsibilities as a parent, according to a new survey by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. This burnout can lead many caretakers to self-isolate, as they don't feel like they have the energy to maintain relationships outside their family. Two out of three parents say the demands of parenthood sometimes or frequently make them feel lonely, according to the survey. To curb burnout at home and in the workplace, take these three steps.
