How Henry Taylor Transformed the Way We Look at Ourselves

HENRY TAYLOR How the figurative painter made portraiture the dominant mode of art in our era — and changed the way America sees itself. It was Henry Taylor doing Henry Taylor, like a pop star in his Vegas residency phase. A few seasons earlier, for Miu Miu’s spring 2022 collection, Prada delivered raw-edge chino micro-miniskirts belted below the hip bone. How Miuccia Prada Reinvented Fashion
  + stars: | 2023-10-19 | by ( Nick Haramis | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +111 min
A few seasons earlier, for Miu Miu’s spring 2022 collection, Prada delivered raw-edge chino micro-miniskirts belted below the hip bone. Firstview (8); courtesy of Prada PRADA STILL resides in the Milanese apartment where she and her two older siblings, Marina and Alberto, grew up. In 1993, her days of on-the-ground protest behind her — she’d long stopped handing out flyers at rallies — Prada and Bertelli created Milano Prada Arte, which later became the Fondazione Prada. Styled by Suzanne Koller FOR THE PAST few years, Miuccia Prada hasn’t had to do quite as much all by herself. © TriStar/Everett Collection Bening and Warren Beatty in “Bugsy.” Everett Collection Bening in “American Beauty” (1999).

Many of CTL’s clients are museums looking to restore works by a single artist, the video art pioneer Nam June Paik, who died in 2006. Known for his sculptures and room-size installations of flickering CRT monitors, Paik began visiting the shop in the 1970s on breaks from his studio in nearby SoHo. Paik’s work was on view, along with video works from dozens of other artists, in “Signals,” a sweeping exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York earlier this year. Many pieces in the show, such as those in the video collectives section, played on boxy Sony CRT monitors, long favored by artists for their austere, stackable design, and which stopped being produced in the 2000s. “I had to tell security, ‘Pretend these are Donald Judds,’ because they’re basically priceless at this point.”

Known for films including "Edward Scissorhands", "Frankenweenie" and "Corpse Bride", Burton has also been showcasing his drawings and models in exhibitions. In an interview, Burton reflected on the show's latest incarnation, the "The World of Tim Burton", which opened on Wednesday at the Mole Antonelliana in Turin, Italy. In June 1977, visitors to the Gallery of Modern Art in Bologna, Italy, were met with a shocking sight: Marina Abramovic, the Serbian performance artist, and her partner, Ulay, standing in the museum’s doorway, completely naked. The only way inside was to squeeze between the couple. Abramovic and Ulay remained in place for three hours, staring intently into each other’s eyes, as a stream of visitors pushed through and sometimes stepped on their toes. This fall, Abramovic, now 76, is restaging that work, “Imponderabilia,” at the Royal Academy of Arts, in London, as part of a major retrospective of her work that runs through Jan. 1, 2024. Since Abramovic no longer performs the work herself, and Ulay died in 2020, she has recruited younger performers to take part — and there is another major difference from the 1977 piece.

CNN —During a ceremony and press conference Wednesday in New York, seven drawings by the Austrian expressionist Egon Schiele were returned to the heirs of their former owner, Fritz Grünbaum, whose art collection was stolen by the Nazis during World War II. His routines, which often openly derided Nazism and Hitler, were eventually banned, and Nazis arrested Grünbaum in 1938. His wife, Elisabeth, was later forced to turn over her husband’s art collection — which Bragg said Wednesday included “hundreds of pieces” — to the Nazis. Grünbaum’s collection included “I Love Antithesis,” a colorful watercolor painting of the artist, and “Girl Putting on Shoe,” which was previously held by MoMA. Earlier this week, additional Schiele pieces were “seized” from three US museums amid other efforts to reunite Grünbaum’s collection, though they currently remain at the museums pending further investigation.

Instead, the artist sent the museum two empty frames entitled “Take the Money and Run,” saying he had created new, “better” pieces to fit the exhibition’s theme. “And if needed… take the money and run,” he added. Despite its protestations, the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art exhibited Haaning’s empty canvases alongside a print-out of an email in which he explained his actions. The ruling also dismissed a counter-claim made by Haaning, who alleged that the museum had infringed on the work’s copyright. And then it also applies to the question: Are artists paid enough for what they do?”Kunsten Museum of Modern Art in Aalborg, Denmark.

Back in 2021, a Danish artist turned in empty frames after being paid 532,000 kroner by a museum for his art. "I am shocked, but at the same time, it is exactly what I have imagined," Haaning told Danish broadcaster DR on Monday, per NPR's translation. However, Haaning refused, and consequently, the Kunsten Museum took him to court, the Guardian reported. And Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan once sold an artwork featuring fresh bananas he taped onto a wall for $120,000. In 1961, the New York curator Dorothy Miller bought a Botero work, “Mona Lisa, Age Twelve,” for the Museum of Modern Art. It was placed on exhibit while the original Mona Lisa was being shown uptown, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Modern’s attention to his work helped set Mr. Botero on a path to renown. “A perfect woman in art can prove banal in reality, like a photograph in Playboy,” Mr. Botero reasoned. “The critics have always written with rage and fury about me, all my life,” Mr. Botero groused.

The Reina Sofía did not explain the origins of the ban on photographing one specific painting, but museums have long struggled with how best to conserve artworks and manage resources while trying to remain relevant to the public. For example, visitors cannot take photos inside the Sistine Chapel in Italy, and photography and filming are prohibited in some special exhibitions at museums because of copyright or lending concerns. That worry has abated, she said, but there is still genuine fear that works could be damaged by distracted visitors, and that their photographs could fundamentally alter museum programming. But the painting, which Picasso lent to the Museum of Modern Art in New York for decades while Gen. Francisco Franco was in power in Spain, has not always been so restricted. When it was on view at MoMA in 1974, Tony Shafrazi, an artist who later became a successful art dealer, sprayed “Kill Lies All” in red foot-high letters on the canvas.

“Whether you are a plaintiff, prosecutor or defense counsel, attorneys are always looking for new precedents,” Mark Vlasic, an adjunct professor of law at Georgetown University and former United Nations war crimes prosecutor, said in an email. The art will be transported to New York at a later date. In a statement, the Art Institute said: “We are confident in our legal acquisition and lawful possession of this work. Before Wednesday’s actions, the Grünbaum heirs had filed civil claims not just against the three museums, but also against the Museum of Modern Art and the Morgan Library and Museum, both in New York City; the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in California; and several individual defendants. The plaintiffs in this case had filed claims seeking the return of other Schiele works at other museums.

The original “Filling Station” was created for Ballet Caravan, a short-lived touring company led by the impresario Lincoln Kirstein, as part of his long effort to establish ballet in the United States. It was a mix of ballet bravura, vaudeville gags and comic-strip aesthetics. (A 1954 television performance by dancers from New York City Ballet, which Kirstein founded with George Balanchine in 1948, can be found on YouTube.) Kirstein described the gas station setting as an invitingly familiar one, a crossroads where different kinds of “recognizable social types” could meet. “There was a lot of difference in the space, and I was working not to collapse us into the same hole,” Jones said.

Fiber Art Is Finally Being Taken Seriously

Made of more than 3,000 “ponytails” of linen thread, as the artist called them, stitched together and piled atop one another, it looked at first glance like something one might encounter in a commercial fabric store. Neither traditional sculpture nor painting, it conjured both, a monumental object made from the humblest materials. The show that featured Hicks’s work, “Wall Hangings,” was a rare American institutional endorsement of artists who make ambitious work out of fiber and broadened the idea of what art could be. But the exhibition received only one major review, in the niche publication Craft Horizons, by the sculptor Louise Bourgeois. If they must be classified, they would fall somewhere between fine and applied art.” They “rarely liberate themselves from decoration,” she concluded, deploying what might be art’s most insulting critical term.

Dan’s research and teaching focus is on using AI for legal services and the regulation of AI in society. For instance, we can develop AI tools to help individuals understand their responsibilities and rights, and preserve and enforce those rights. People in businesses, large and small, are already using chatbots, AI assistants and other AI tools to help them comply with laws, regulations and internal policies. Additionally, new roles are emerging in the legal industry, such as legal engineers who build systems, legal data scientists and legal operations professionals. AI tools will then quickly re-optimize decisions associated with inventory shipments, staffing and promotions.

Ed Ruscha’s ‘Chocolate Room’ Still Tantalizes

A rich perfume wafts through the sixth floor of the Museum of Modern Art, where the installation of Ed Ruscha’s full-dress survey “Now Then” is underway. You sense it before you see it: a room where the white walls are turning velvety brown. A chocolate room. “Chocolate Room” is an oddity in Ruscha’s influential oeuvre. In “The Slip,” Prudence Peiffer’s tenderly researched group biography, six visual artists in different seasons of life and seeking different aesthetic ideals met Barr’s challenge with an unlikely spirit of concert. Beside him is his art school friend Jack Youngerman, painter of shaggy color fields in organic, almost floral forms. Grown bored in postwar Paris, the Jersey boy and the Kentuckian relocated to the abandoned sail-making lofts of Coenties Slip, an old manufacturing block in the toe of Manhattan. From 1956 to around 1964, an artist colony and some truly epochal art took shape there. That scene has long fascinated critics but never been the subject of a researched narrative history until now.

CNN —The identity of the elusive street artist Banksy has always been shrouded in secrecy, but a new BBC podcast may have unveiled a new detail about the art world’s mystery man. When the Museum of Modern Art began collecting video games a decade ago, curators boldly asserted that games were an artistic medium. The MoMA exhibition “Never Alone: Video Games and Other Interactive Design,” which runs through Sunday, represents the museum’s cautious advance into the gaming world at a time when digital culture has overtaken its galleries. However, the museum could do more to break the firewall between art lovers and game designers. Curators need to unleash that same passion for games, which struggle in the current exhibition to convey the profundity, and complexity, of their designers’ thinking. On the first floor, old computer monitors cantilevered above visitors are drawn from the museum’s collection of video games.
