Just about every state in America has cracked down on fentanyl distribution, by stepping up arrests and increasing prison sentences. But few places are as aggressive as Riverside County, Calif., in prosecuting people who supply fatal does of fentanyl. Since late 2021, the Riverside County district attorney, Mike Hestrin, has charged 34 suspected fentanyl suppliers with murder and is said to be the first prosecutor in California to achieve a guilty verdict from a jury in a fentanyl-related homicide trial. Riverside County has a reputation for aggressively prosecuting crimes (a “prosecutor’s paradise,” one local defense lawyer calls it). And like Riverside, some other counties — like San Diego and Placer, near Sacramento — that have also brought murder charges against fentanyl suppliers have sizable numbers of conservative-minded voters who tend to favor more punitive approaches to crime.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — U.S. aerospace company Stratolaunch conducted the first powered test flight of a new unmanned craft for hypersonic research on Saturday and called it a success. Hypersonic describes flights at speeds of at least Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound. The Talon, powered by a liquid-fuel rocket engine, ended its flight by descending into the ocean as planned. The company called the result a major milestone in the development of the United States' first privately funded, reusable hypersonic test capability. That project was canceled, and new owners then repurposed Stratolaunch for launches of reusable hypersonic research vehicles.

Alphabet's Waymo robotaxi unit won approval from the California Public Utilities Commission to expand service to parts of Los Angeles and the Bay Area, according to a notice posted to the regulator's website on Friday. The work forms part of his solo show “Heaven N’ Earth,” at art dealer Xavier Hufkens’ flagship gallery in Brussels, Belgium, exploring the complex dichotomies of the urban landscape. The Broad Museum in Los Angeles has also recently added Gomez’s work to its collection. LANCASTER, Calif. (AP) — A man armed with two machetes was fatally shot inside a Southern California supermarket Tuesday after he charged at sheriff's deputies, authorities said. The shooting took place at about 9:30 a.m. at an Albertsons supermarket in Lancaster, a high desert community north of Los Angeles. The man reportedly had confronted people in the store when Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies arrived. They tried to subdue him using stun guns and other methods before he charged them and was shot, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The man had earlier been seen armed with a machete and threatening a clerk at a nearby gas station, authorities said.
