☆ Student Housing Has a New Mantra: Bigger Is Better

When the Standard, an off-campus student housing complex, opened in the fall in Bloomington, Ind., welcoming its first batch of residents, it had a decidedly resort vibe. Along with the requisite pool and fitness centers, it enticed students with two pickleball courts, a dog park and a motion sports simulator. The arms race over amenities in student housing is nothing new, but what is striking about the Standard is its size: 1,000 beds, about twice the size of a typical dorm. In fact, the Standard could house 3 percent of Indiana University’s 34,000-plus undergraduates. Off-campus student housing complexes across the country are getting larger, some home to more than 1,500 students, and they are being built on prime parcels as close to campus as possible, as developers seek to better manage their bottom line.

The dominant weight loss drugmakers, Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly , have said supply woes likely won't go away anytime soon, as the popularity of those medicines continues to soar. Some Wall Street analysts project that the weight loss drug market could be worth $100 billion by the end of the decade. But both Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly gave updates on positive supply developments to investors over the last week. (AP) — DePauw University has received $200 million in donations, representing the largest gift in the western Indiana school’s history, university officials announced Wednesday. The private 1,800-student liberal arts college said it received a $150 million gift from an anonymous donor and $50 million in supporting matches from other donors. The donations will bolster campus-wide initiatives and the school's strategic plan, announced in 2022, that includes strengthening DePauw's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, its new School of Business and Leadership and its Creative School, which will launch this fall, officials said. The school’s largest previous gift was $128 million it received in 1999 to support teaching and learning. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — One year after passing a law that allows Ukrainian immigrants on humanitarian parole to receive driver’s licenses, Indiana lawmakers are trying to repeal it after a federal judge recently ruled that the law must extend to all parolees. A group of Haitian immigrants living in Indiana under the same federal designation sued the state over the law, saying it was discriminatory and unconstitutional. The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana and the National Immigration Law Center are representing the Haitian immigrants in the ongoing lawsuit, which seeks to permanently undo the Ukrainian stipulation. Gavin Rose, senior staff attorney with the ACLU of Indiana, told The Associated Press it's not clear how the suit would be affected if the bill, House Bill 1162, becomes law. “I think that status is being granted to people that we would have problems with.”The bill passed 89-8 in the Republican-controlled state House without debate and now advances to the state Senate.
