☆ Why Delta is still canceling flights as other airlines return to normal

Atlanta-based Delta canceled 1,500 flights on Friday, or more than a third of its schedule. It grounded nearly 3,000 more flights over the weekend, and early Monday had already canceled 700 more flights, or about 60% of flights canceled by all airlines worldwide. Most other US airlines had only 1% of its flights canceled, compared to roughly one out of every six scheduled Delta flights. It can take longer to get crews needed to fly planes in the right cities to again staff flights. The problems at Delta are similar to the problems that occurred at Southwest Airlines over the end-of-year holiday travel period in 2022 when it had to cancel nearly 17,000 flights over the course of more than a week.

Republican representatives on Monday called on CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz to testify in front of the House Committee on Homeland Security, days after the company issued a faulty software update that crashed millions of Microsoft Windows devices. The outage caused disruptions across "key functions" of the global economy, including banking, aviation, health care, emergency services and media, the lawmakers said. Kurtz said Friday that the outage was not a cyberattack or security incident, and CrowdStrike deployed a fix that day. Green and Garbarino asked CrowdStrike to set up a hearing with the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection by Wednesday at the latest. CrowdStrike and Microsoft did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment.

Travel plans across the world were thrown into disarray on Friday, as a global technology outage disrupted businesses and services — including air travel — leaving thousands of flights canceled or delayed across the United States and beyond. Aliseril briefly considered buying an older aircraft, and looked at some that had been built in the 1960s and 1970s. After researching self-assembly aircraft kits, he came across a four-seater plane manufactured by South African company Sling Aircraft that ticked all the right boxes. “I would say generally, anyone can get involved in these sorts of builds.”Lockdown projectHe built a shed in his garden to complete the build. Airports have many bells and whistles these days. But most travelers would gladly trade them for flights that consistently arrive on time. The passenger rights company AirHelp ranked 239 airports in 69 countries, with an emphasis on the on-time performance of flights operating from May 2023 to April 2024. That measure accounted for 60% of each airport's total score, with on-time performance defined as flights that arrive within 15 minutes of their published arrival times. The Avro Arrow, also known as the CF-105, had a lot resting on its wings. Data from flight tracker FlightAware shows WestJet on Sunday had canceled at least 343 flights, constituting 77% of its fleet. The airline’s regional subsidiary, WestJet Encore, has canceled at least 80 flights. At Calgary International Airport, 42% of outbound flights and 40% of inbound flights have been canceled. But in an update to members on Sunday shared with CNN, the union announced the industrial relations board ruled the strike was lawful, as the board continues to mediate negotiations. The industrial relations board has not responded to CNN’s request for comment.
