On Halloween, the pop star Sabrina Carpenter uploaded a music video to YouTube for her new song “Feather.” That was a Tuesday. By the end of the week, a Catholic priest had been stripped of his administrative duties because of it. In the video, Ms. Carpenter, 24, a former Disney child star with more than 31 million followers on Instagram, dances through Our Lady of Mount Carmel-Annunciation Parish, a Catholic church in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. In another scene, she appears to be splattered with blood after a fight scene in a gym. The lawsuit, filed Friday, accuses Sen. Kevin Parker of assaulting her in 2004, during his first term. The suit was filed under the Adult Survivors Act, a special state law that created a yearlong suspension of the usual time limit for accusers to sue. A spokesperson for Parker, a Democrat, did not immediately comment when asked about the lawsuit. New York state government has struggled for years with allegations about sexual harassment and misconduct by politicians. US District Court Judge Lewis Kaplan announced that convicted former FTX CEO Sam Bankman will be sentenced on March 28, 2024. Meanwhile, Bankman-Fried will return to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where he’s been held since August. Located on the industrial waterfront of Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood, the MDC has earned a reputation as one of the worst jails in America. Bankman-Fried is also “friendly” with Genaro García Luna, the former head of Mexico’s FBI, who is awaiting sentencing for drug trafficking, this person said. “As a matter of free speech, people who oppose the ‘kidnapped’ posters could erect posters of their own, expressing their views,” Professor Zick said. “I don’t think they’re ripping down posters of ‘Dan Smith Will Teach You Guitar,’” he said. The posters “don’t include Palestinians, so are they concerned about missing people?” he asked. At the corner of Broadway and West 96th Street last weekend, half-ripped posters were covered with small fliers that said: “Why are the posters of kidnapped Israelis being ripped down? NEW YORK (AP) — To appeal to a new generation of philanthropists, the Brooklyn Community Foundation is ditching the word “foundation” and establishing itself with a new name: Brooklyn Org. “The point isn’t lost on Rainey, who says that no matter what people call it, Brooklyn Org is still a foundation. But she said the new name reflects different practices the foundation has put in place that let residents steer the course of the institution. All of the foundation’s discretionary grantmaking, Rainey says, uses a participatory approach, where residents research and pick nonprofits to receive grants. The AP and the Chronicle receive support from the Lilly Endowment for coverage of philanthropy and nonprofits and are solely responsible for this content.

His masterful, theatrical buildups, full of relentless bass lines, pounding synths and prismatic arpeggios, blasted from the speakers as a single disco ball sparkled overhead. But Christ, born Joshua Leary, didn’t always know how to work a room like this. Most artists don’t drop their debut a decade after their breakthrough, but Christ, 34, has long chosen the unconventional path. His skill for that approach endeared him to ravers across the globe, in part because he has long been devoted to trance, an often-derided genre of dance music rooted in big climaxes and unabashed sentimentality. On “Revanchist” he leans into it at a critical moment in the sound’s bubbling comeback, making a statement about its relevance and power.

Alamo employees worked with United Auto Workers Local 2179 and this week voted to unionize, with nearly two-thirds in favor. They join Alamo employees at the Brooklyn theater, who voted last month to become part of Local 2179. At a time of labor action in the movie industry and beyond, union activity is expanding at movie theaters themselves, a trend which began during the pandemic. Within days, Brooklyn employees voted to unionize, by a margin of more than 2-to-1. “For years the workers of Brooklyn Alamo have tried to solve problems through dialogue with management, to no avail,” the union statement read in part.

Andrew Lichtenstein | Corbis News | Getty ImagesThe U.S. unemployment rate held steady in September, but ticked down among Hispanic workers, according to data released Friday by the U.S. Labor Department. The unemployment rate held steady at 3.8%, and came in slightly ahead of a 3.7% forecast. Broken down, it dipped to 4.3% from 4.4% among Hispanic women and held steady at 4.3% for Hispanic men. However, it does mark a stark from the depths of the pandemic when the group experienced the highest unemployment rate, according to Gould. Among Black men, the unemployment rate increased to 5.6% from 5%, and fell to 4.5% from 4.7% among Black women.

Cars drive along a flooded street on Church Avenue amid a coastal storm on September 29, 2023 in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn borough New York City. And more than a decade after Hurricane Sandy forced officials to rethink the meaning of climate resilience in New York City, it appears there's still much to be done. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley, calling the storm a "life-threatening rainfall event." The storm caused about $19 billion in damage to New York City. In densely populated cities like New York, flooding risks are heightened because of the built environment and lack of green spaces.

[1/7] An abandoned vehicle sits in floodwaters during a heavy rain storm in the New York City suburb of Mamaroneck in Westchester County, New York, U.S., September 29, 2023. The extreme rainfall prompted New York Governor Kathy to declare a state of emergency for New York City, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley. Systems producing intense rainfalls have become more commonplace in many parts of the United States, including the New York City area, in recent years. That storm soaked New York City and caused widespread power outages in North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. In New York, intermittent rain this week further saturated the ground, setting up conditions conducive to flash flooding.

A high school football coach in the Cleveland area resigned on Monday after he and his team repeatedly used the word “Nazi” as a play-call reference during a game on Friday night, school officials said. The coach, Tim McFarland, who led Brooklyn High School’s football team, and his players used the term in the first half of a game against Beachwood High School, Robert Hardis, the superintendent of the Beachwood schools, said in a statement. Brooklyn High School, from the southwest Cleveland suburb of Brooklyn, was playing as the visiting team in Beachwood, Ohio, a predominantly Jewish suburb southeast of Cleveland. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAMSTERDAM, Sept 15 (Reuters) - More than two-thirds of the world's population favours solar energy, five times more than public support for fossil fuels, a global poll has found. With 68% support, solar power was the most popular energy source, trailed by wind (54%), hydropower (35%) and nuclear (24%), with only 14% of respondents saying they favoured fossil fuels, the survey found. Fossil fuels, however, still accounted for 77% of global energy consumption in 2022, said Michael Sheldrick, Co-Founder and Chief Policy, Impact and Government Affairs Officer at Global Citizen. "This 'production gap' highlights a concerning paradox: despite strong public support for renewable energy, fossil fuel production remains prevalent," he said. Global energy demand rose 1% last year and record renewables growth did nothing to shift the dominance of fossil fuels, the most recent Statistical Review of World Energy report said.

Mara Manus, a former executive director for the New York State Council on the Arts, will become the chief executive officer at Pioneer Works, the nonprofit cultural center in Brooklyn, its board of directors announced on Tuesday. Manus, who will start in October, replaces the executive director Maxine Dalio, who left at the end of last year, and the interim chief Jill Eisenhard. She will work closely with the artist Dustin Yellin, the founder of Pioneer Works; Gabriel Florenz, its founding artistic director; and the astrophysicist Dr. Janna Levin, the chief science officer. The appointment marks a pivotal moment for Pioneer Works, which is housed in a former iron works factory in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn. Lately its ambition has grown; in a major capital project, it now plans to open a publicly accessible roof deck observatory — a rarity in New York City.
