They’re members of Congress. “I mean, straighten up here.”Even before this week, a number of vulgar refrains, heated exchanges and a near physical altercation punctuated this Congress after festering in recent years. What have we become?’”Indeed, this Congress seemed to kick off with drama baked in. The picture of this Congress is a stark departure from expectations for lawmakers in recent history. “For a lot of members, Congress is not a legislature so much as it is a reality television show about a legislature,” C. Lawrence Evans, a professor of government at the College of William & Mary, says.

“The stakes, of course, mean the stakes for American democracy,” Rosen told me by phone Tuesday. Needless to say, sounding the alarm on Trump’s disturbing conduct is more difficult than engaging in horse race coverage. “And [horse race coverage] is an easy way to make a complicated subject come alive for audiences,” Rosen added. “Rather, that the horse race should not be the model for how you design your coverage. “We are getting more and more stakes journalism from our national media,” Rosen said.

The photograph tells us nothing about whether or how these children are related. Hundreds of Israeli hostages, including children, are believed to be held in Gaza by Hamas, their families desperate for their safe release. It is a rare thing for mainstream news organizations to publish graphic images of dead or wounded children. There is nothing quite so devastating as the image of a child whose life has been snuffed out by senseless violence. And so the slaughter in Maine reminded me of another image from Gaza, one you may have seen on social media.

CNN —Disney has a mess on its hands to marvel at. The embarrassingly weak debut marked the worst opening for any Marvel Studios film in its history. But, in recent years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has started to show serious signs of trouble. Those films — all of which were released after “Endgame” — are the four worst-reviewed films in Marvel history, according to Rotten Tomatoes averages. And the movies failed to earn an A-rating from CinemaScore, a feat almost all Marvel films easily accomplished, signaling deeper troubles with audience reception and crushing word-of-mouth.

The VC funding picture for late-stage startups is looking pretty grim with capital hard to come by. Some late-stage startups are now folding and selling off their best assets during this cash crunch. AdvertisementAdvertisementIt's been a pretty brutal year for startups and their founders looking to raise venture capital funding. AdvertisementAdvertisementThis longer wait time between rounds isn't totally surprising since VC funding this year has been its lowest since 2018. Startup extinction season is well underway and it seems as though we're seeing a startup per week bite the dust.

But the stock market doesn’t seem to have gotten the memo. Instead, the shares of a broad range of clean energy companies have been crushed lately, in a rout that encompasses just about every alternative energy sector, including solar, wind and geothermal power. At the same time, rather than weaning themselves off oil, Exxon Mobil and Chevron, the two biggest U.S. oil companies, are doubling down. The evidence that carbon emissions are warming the planet is persuasive. Yet the stock market, which is supposed to be forward-looking, is treating alternative energy companies with disdain and big oil companies with respect.

Zelenskyy praised Ukraine's wins in the Black Sea, noting they'd "be in history textbooks." Ukraine's forces followed up that attack with a later strike on the Black Sea Fleet headquarters. CNN —The arc of Rep. Mike Johnson’s career encapsulates the shifting priorities of the religious right in the era of Donald Trump. More than half of White evangelicals agreed with that statement as well – the only major religious denomination in which it found majority support. Yet both groups are much more influential inside the GOP coalition, with evangelicals representing nearly one-third of Republican voters and all White Christians about two-thirds. But in Congress, Johnson has also identified more with some of the party’s Trump-era priorities that revolve around demographic change. But each man appears equally committed to a vision of America that elevates the moral and political preferences of conservative White Christians over any other group.

President Joe Biden is expected to travel to Israel on Wednesday to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – a visit rife with risk and one that projects the depth of America’s commitment to support Israel while underscoring the precarious state of affairs in the Middle East. Biden was originally invited to Egypt over the weekend to participate in a summit to discuss the future of Palestinians. Blinken also announced late Monday that the U.S. reached an agreement with Israel about how to do just that – though details were scarce. The Israel Defense Forces began staging tanks and troops along the Gaza border on Thursday and ordered roughly 1 million residents to evacuate Gaza City on Friday. Over the weekend, Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters exchanged rocket fire that left at least seven people dead, including four members of Hezbollah.

CNN —Some journalists are making the ultimate sacrifice while covering the war between Israel and Hamas. At least seven journalists have been killed in the Gaza Strip since Hamas launched its brazen assault on Saturday, according to press freedom groups and media reports. Meanwhile, journalists based in Gaza, which has been battered with airstrikes from Israel, are at an even greater risk. For those reasons, and other logistical difficulties, there are very few Western journalists in Gaza. “They have made those sacrifices to show what is happening on the ground,” Mansour added, speaking about the at least seven journalists killed this week while reporting from the Gaza Strip.

The Girlies Know: ‘Oppenheimer’ Was Actually About Us

Here the girlhood parallels move beyond the facetious to acquire a darker quality, as shame begins to erode Oppenheimer’s sense of self. The great Oppenheimer realizes that no amount of personal brilliance can counter the force of the state. Near the film’s end, Oppenheimer silently reckons with visions of what his brilliance has wrought: unimaginable suffering and fire as the invention he fathered wipes out civilization itself. For a Great Man like him, it took the twin shames of the bomb’s destruction and public disgrace to have this life-altering yet basic realization about his own powerlessness. This is a rule and a warning that life has drilled into girls from age 13, if not sooner.

Biden's economic agenda has meant real changes for many Americans, like clean water and internet access. That $1 million came from President Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan , which was passed in 2021 to revitalize the economy and replenish Americans' wallets. But for the target groups seeing their everyday lives changed by Bidenomics funding, it can make a world of difference. Americans who are not part of targeted populations receiving these grants are left to contend with sky-high prices on their own.

Bloomberg’s Christopher Palmeri and Thomas Buckley reported that Disney has “held exploratory talks” about selling ABC to Nexstar Media Group. The duo also reported that media mogul Byron Allen has also spoken with Disney about a possible deal. “Everyone is freaking the f**k out,” one ABC News staffer bluntly told me about the state of affairs inside the network. Whether a deal to offload ABC and Disney’s linear stations is ultimately in the cards remains to be seen. “I’m ridiculously passionate about news,” Iger told senior company leaders.

CNN —It’s a carriage fight that could lead to the dismantling — or revolution — of the cable television bundle. Charter argues that it is paying a premium for Disney content ($2.2 billion in 2023), but that much of the first-class, buzzy content is actually on platforms like Disney+, not the linear channels. And it says it has proposed “creative ways” to make Disney’s DTC offerings available to Charter subscribers. But, in Disney’s eyes, why would it give away access to its expensive DTC content at no additional cost to Charter subscribers? “The Walt Disney Company and Charter have the opportunity to work together on transforming the industry for the long-term benefit of both companies and their customers,” Charter said.

Investors should prepare for fiscal, banking, and energy crises, a hedge fund manager warned. And thanks to a strong performance in July, the $254 million hedge fund has risen 16.8% after fees in 2023. Oil prices came under pressure when government reserves were released, but Kupperman said that's not a viable long-term recipe for reasonable energy prices. He expects a massive spike in oil prices in either 2024 or 2025, which will greatly benefit companies tied to the commodity. The investing opportunity Kupperman said he's most excited about is uranium, which he's playing through the Sprott Physical Uranium Trust.

What do you think it means?” MacCallum asked in the opening question of the evening. The first question wasn’t about former Republican President Donald Trump, indicted four times, about to face arraignment in Georgia in less than 24 hours. And even when Baier and MacCallum confronted the candidates with some of their more strenuous questions, they themselves appeared to do so reluctantly. Take the issue of Trump, a topic that went noticeably unaddressed for nearly the first hour of the debate. Of course, it is clear why Fox News preferred to avoid the topic of Trump.

But the public’s leverage is weak, the political dynamics are complex and the alternatives are fewer than they used to be. The upshot was an enduring advantage for internet retailers over bricks-and-mortar stores. Adding insult to injury, the big internet retailers have taken great advantage of a communal resource. The real estate that Amazon and other vendors require to make their deliveries is not private but public. We faced a smaller version of this problem with the surge of urban lunch trucks a decade ago.

During a lengthy sit-down interview with CNBC’s Sara Eisen, Yaccarino described the one-time bird platform as if everything were not only swell, but in a better position since Musk’s chaotic takeover and reign. But perhaps an even more preposterous claim from Yaccarino came when Eisen pressed her on brand safety and hate speech appearing on the platform since Musk’s takeover. Yaccarino celebrated Coca-Cola and State Farm marketing their products on Twitter/X, as she underscored the platform’s commitment to brand safety. Under Musk’s watch, the platform has welcomed back white nationalists, conspiracy theorists, anti-vaccine activists, and various other extremists with open arms. Alas, it is no wonder that conspiracy theories and hate speech are flourishing on the platform.

WeWork's rise and fall offers a stark warning for the AI era. Companies racing for glory in the AI era would do well to learn from the over-exuberance in the WeWork saga. Since the launch of ChatGPT last year, private tech investors have abandoned their temporary pullback in startup investment to throw money at almost any company with AI in the name. ChatGPT's creator OpenAI has bagged billions of dollars from Microsoft, while venture capitalists announced $10.7 billion of generative AI startup deals in the first quarter of the year, per data firm Pitchbook. But equally, investors would be wise to learn from WeWork and look under the hood of any AI firm claiming it will fundamentally alter any market.

CNN —Hollywood is still mired in a state of anguish. When news emerged last week that the studios and striking writers were set to meet for the first time since the strike commenced in early May, a ray of hope emerged in Hollywood. The fire and brimstone that has overtaken Hollywood is on the path toward making history in the worst possible way. The current standoff has already surpassed the 2007-08 strike, which clocked in at 93 days, and is marching toward the longest writers’ strike on record: 154 days in 1988. Without production — a major economic engine that extends far beyond Hollywood — countless people who work in support roles are also without income.
