My grandfather, Reizo, is 95 years old and starts every day with a walk around Osaka. I wanted to spend more time with him and learn about the activities that keep him so healthy and happy. Here are his eight non-negotiables for a long and happy life:1. He takes an early morning walk. Since 2014, he has spent a few minutes almost every day writing his thoughts, experiences and insights on his blog.

Babies who nap more frequently might have a smaller vocabulary and lower cognitive skills, according to a new study published in the medical journal JCPP Advances. But our research shows that how frequently a child naps reflects their individual cognitive need." Some babies are more efficient at consolidating information while they sleep, therefore need to sleep less. This doesn't mean you should limit how much your child naps in hopes of widening their vocabulary, she says. Let your child naps as much as they need.

Sleep Better at Every Age
  + stars: | 2023-07-07 | by ( Dani Blum | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +47 min
Sleep training, the process of teaching babies how to soothe themselves at night and sleep independently, can start when infants are 3 to 4 months old. While sleep training can be taxing for everyone involved, it can lead to better sleep for the whole household. If your child is struggling to sleep through the night at this age, consider talking to a pediatrician about possible solutions. The problem: Insomnia can strike at any age: Around 20 percent of children have difficulty falling or staying asleep. Plus, the older we get, the harder it is to bounce back from a night of poor sleep, Dr. Roth said.

Maggie Harrison’s War on Wine

But the friend kept calling, and eventually she relented, flew to Portland and drove to a hillside in Amity. In 2019, she began offering an annual seminar for wine professionals that she named Beauty School. In her pursuit of maximally beautiful wines, Harrison has devised possibly the world’s most laborious way of making them. This blending period is when Harrison’s wines find their identities. “Though they can be punishingly difficult,” Ready told me, “those blending sessions are about trusting yourself, believing in the process and letting go of the desire to second guess.”Punishingly difficult seems to be Harrison’s thing.

At the margins of “The Light Room,” the pandemic persists. We glimpse it in the colorful masks of the children in the park, in the Halloween candy chute, in attempts to schedule vaccines. Mostly, though, Covid is not the protagonist but the force that keeps the family indoors, that amplifies their isolation. “The Light Room” is ultimately, as Zambreno writes, “a collection of meditations.” Some may indeed find them “translucent” — light-catching, yes, but also insubstantial. Readers looking for sturdier insights into what the virus has meant for human history are unlikely to discover them here.

Daytime naps may be good for our brains, study says
  + stars: | 2023-06-20 | by ( Jack Guy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
CNN —Taking daytime naps may help maintain brain health as we age, according to a new study. The results show “a small but significant increase in brain volume in people who have a genetic signature associated with taking daytime naps,” she told the Science Media Centre. “Even with those limitations, this study is interesting because it adds to the data indicating that sleep is important for brain health,” she said. MoMo Productions/Digital Vision/Getty ImagesHowever, such a technique can only show an association between nap and brain health, not cause and effect. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas says he regrets taking sleeping pills after complaining about feeling sluggish in his French Open quarterfinal defeat against Carlos Alcaraz on Tuesday. While praising Alcaraz for his “great” performance, Tsitsipas says he was hampered by his own preparation and disrupted sleep cycle. “One thing that I’m going to try to avoid in the future is to have melatonin pills [sleeping pills] and naps before matches because it clearly doesn’t seem to be working,” Tsitsipas told reporters. Like the US Open and Australian Open, Roland-Garros has regularly featured night sessions which, despite generating a great atmosphere under the lights, means matches can finish past midnight. So it’s gonna be a great match for me.”

Things such as life insurance and investments can help increase your child's financial security. These are the tools a financial planner said parents should consider. Get — or update — life insuranceHaving up-to-date life insurance is one of the most important things you can do to look out for your child. And that's the perfect time to open a Roth individual retirement account, a type of retirement savings account. "To determine what's best for them, parents should consider their financial goals, risk tolerance, and their child's potential needs," Lofton said.

What’s confusing about Chicago deep-dish pizza is that there’s way too much of it. What’s amazing about this pen is that they work great, then they eventually explode in your hand. CNN —Rocket launches are like opening a box of chocolates, only riskier — you never know what you’re going to get. When a rocket is set to leap off the launchpad, there’s a good chance of seeing a stunning liftoff or a spectacular failure. The lead-up to this week’s launch of SpaceX’s Starship, the most powerful rocket ever built, was a dramatic roller coaster. The rocket blasted off from the launchpad in South Texas and roared 24.2 miles (39 kilometers) over the Gulf of Mexico. Now, researchers have a new theory about why the Vikings abruptly departed in the mid-15th century: rising sea levels.
But some animals get a lot less slumber - with certain species like the northern elephant seal taking sleeplessness to an extreme. During dives lasting about 30 minutes, the seals went into a deep sleep stage called slow-wave sleep while maintaining a controlled downward trajectory. The species is the world's second-largest seal, topped only by the southern elephant seal. Male northern elephant seals may reach 13 feet long (4 meters) and weigh up to 4,500 pounds (2,000 kg). "It is very peaceful to spend time on the beach watching elephant seals sleep.
Elephant Seals Take Power Naps During Deep Ocean Dives

Northern elephant seals are also able to sustain themselves on about two hours’ sleep, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Science. The study’s authors believe that sleeping in the deep allows the seals to power-nap without being eaten by prowling predators. Northern elephant seals, which are found along the West Coast, are champion divers that can descend to depths of 2,500 feet and stay under for about two hours. To maintain their blubbery bulk, Northern elephant seals must spend around seven months at sea each year, gorging on fish and squid. However, elephant seals sleep like us, shutting down their brains completely.
Zev Weitman’s angular frame was hunched over his sooty workbench in a cramped diamond-cutting shop several floors above the buzz of Manhattan’s diamond district. But his mind was roaming a crystalline chamber, tweaking facets to coax a brilliant symphony of light from the diamond he was working against a cutting wheel. Back then, there were also thousands of cutters like Mr. Weitman, many of them shaping and perfecting diamonds from rough stones straight out of mines. Now, Mr. Weitman says, only a few hundred remain in the district, focusing on repairs, rush jobs and the kind of high-end work he does. None of his four children — nor, presumably, any of his 28 grandchildren — will follow him into his trade.
The researchers refer to this as a “sleep spiral.”The research marked the first time scientists recorded brain activity in free-ranging wild marine mammals, capturing data from 104 sleep dives. Then she attached them to 13 juvenile female elephant seals that are part of a colony at Año Nuevo State Park in Pescadero, California. In shallow waters, the elephant seals even reached the seafloor, where they would rest. During REM sleep, elephant seals enter a "sleep spiral." Elephant seals sleep the most along the coast and near their foraging grounds, and that data could be used to see how shipping traffic could affect the seals.
After the 10 days, cast members must decide whether they want to get engaged to another contestant sight unseen — or go home. The season-two contestant Nick Thompson said "Love Is Blind" didn't adequately support its cast members — during or after filming. Many cast members believed "Love Is Blind" would be a cut above other reality shows. The first evening in Cancún, producers told Ruhl she couldn't attend a party for all the newly engaged couples because they thought she might have COVID-19. In a later episode he again became infuriated and threatened to leave when Reed came home late from clubbing with other cast members.
What Are People Even Doing All Day?

One day a week, Sophie works late so she can meet with far-flung colleagues in real time. Now she has enough energy left at the end of the day to go grocery shopping and cook dinner. The time markers reflect the time of day when participants told an interviewer they would normally be doing the activity shown.
While remote workers are hitting the green on weekday afternoons, productivity isn't dropping. That's good news for leisure businesses and shows remote work has changed people's work structures. While some companies have called employees back to the office, Bloom doesn't think remote work is going anywhere. All those remote workers hitting the green doesn't necessarily mean people are working less. This will raise 'Golf productivity' — the number of golf courses played (and revenue raised) per course."
In honor of World Sleep Day, we asked Singh how to start each day feeling well-rested, and fortunately there are things you can do day-to-day to keep sleep inertia at bay. And no one's exempt from sleep inertia, says Singh, who is also a sleep expert for SleepFoundation.org and co-author of " Sleep to Heal: 7 Simple Steps to Better Sleep ." Scientifically, "sleep inertia refers to the temporary degradation of alertness and performance," says Dr. Abhinav Singh , sleep physician and medical director of the Indiana Sleep Center. "If you have poor quality of sleep [and] poor quantity of sleep, that can leave you feeling more sleep inertia," he says. 'Avoid social jet lag'Preventing sleep inertia doesn't just boil down to the amount of hours that you sleep each night.

She's among the millions of Americans choosing to work part-time due to burnout, childcare obligations, and to earn extra income. Megan is one of the over 22 million Americans working part-time voluntarily, according to Labor Department data. CNN —Any air travel can be stressful, but facing down a long-haul flight can be especially intimidating. Flight attendants on long-haul flights are provided with spaces to rest. Flight attendants need to be alert throughout the journey, so they will take it in turns to refuel via mid-flight power naps. Flight attendants will greet a returning colleague with a cup of tea or coffee. For flight attendants, Major says, that will involve working over periods in excess of 24 hours.

Flying first class for the first time has convinced me that it's worth the money for longhaul flights. I've been flying my entire life — to the Dominican Republic, to Italy, to Morocco — but it's always been in economy class. That all changed in January when my partner and I were traveling to San Francisco and got upgraded to first class. On our way to the airport, we got a notification that we'd be upgraded from economy to Delta's Comfort+. I got a free upgrade to fly in Delta's first class cabin on a recent flight to San Francisco, California.
WHAT CAN’T chicken wings do? The key ingredient, nam yu (fermented red bean paste), delivers impressive funk, tang and heat. Ms. Lin marinates the wings for 24 hours, gives them a good char and serves them with a ginger-scallion sauce. Though she’s not a follower of football, her wings have become her signature Super Bowl contribution. “I think that’s honestly the best party food,” she said.
However, Boiardi said an earlier proposal from the industry for totally single-pilot flying by 2030 was "absolutely not realistic", because automation had not advanced far enough and solo flying required a level of safety equivalent to existing operations. Solo flying, even in cruise, needs approval from the United Nations' International Civil Aviation Organization, individual airlines and their pilot unions. Even limited solo flying, however, is dividing airlines and raising public fears, while sparking a growing backlash among pilot groups like the European Cockpit Association. Airbus said in a statement it was studying the concept of a single pilot in the cruise phase but not wholly single-pilot flights. Consumer resistance, however, could result in single-pilot flying starting with cargo flights, industry officials said.
San Francisco told Twitter to label converted bedrooms as sleeping areas, per a correction notice. If it doesn't comply, Twitter has 15 days to convert the bedrooms back to offices in its HQ. Officials launched an investigation in December into Twitter's office bedrooms. Patrick Hannan, the Building Inspection Department's communications director, confirmed to Insider in December it was investigating reports that Twitter had converted some office rooms into sleeping areas in its HQ. A former Twitter employee told BBC News that Musk had often slept in Twitter's offices since taking over the company.
Neglecting your brain health can make you vulnerable to degenerative brain diseases like Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. As a neuroscientist, I've spent decades guiding patients with memory problems through brain-enhancing habits and exercises — many of which I practice, too. Here are seven brain rules I follow to keep my memory sharp as a whip:1. Eat brain foods. Get in the habit of converting anything which you find hard to remember into a wild, bizarre or otherwise attention grabbing image.
