Buying a home has never been more expensive relative to renting, according to new research from online rental platform Zumper . Rent was up at the slowest year-over-year pace this month since December 2020, according to Zumper. 32 cities where rent is down meaningfullyFortunately for renters, declines in apartment asking prices are both significant and widespread. Single-family housing starts, which account for the bulk of homebuilding, rose 0.2% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 970,000 units last month, the Commerce Department's Census Bureau said. Overall housing starts rose 1.9% to a rate of 1.372 million units in October. The number of housing under construction dipped 0.1% to a rate of 1.674 million units. The inventory of single-family housing under construction declined 0.6% to a rate of 669,000 units, the lowest level since May 2021. The stock of multi-family housing under construction edged up 0.1% to 987,000 units, not far from recent record highs.

Shares of SolarEdge tumbled over 20% in extending trading Wednesday after the solar product manufacturer reported soft guidance for its fourth quarter amid demand struggles in the renewable energy sector. For the overall solar sector, SolarEdge said it expects revenue in the $275 million to $320 million range. At the time, Lando said installation rates for solar panels had declined though those rates typically increase during the third quarter. SolarEdge is based in Israel, but Lando said in October the Israel-Hamas war has not had an impact on manufacturing. The solar sector has faced headwinds over the past year as rising interest rates weigh on the demand for solar energy.

The alleged collusion violates the District of Columbia's Antitrust Act, the office said. Washington, D.C., Attorney General Brian Schwalb's office said Tuesday that it's suing RealPage, a property management software company, and 14 of the district's largest landlords for allegedly colluding to raise rents. In a statement to CNBC, a company spokesperson for William C. Smith & Co. said the company does not comment on pending litigation. The software uses proprietary, nonpublic data and statistical models to estimate supply and demand and generate a price to maximize the landlord's revenue. RealPage has previously been sued by renters in the Southern District of California and Tennessee over the past year.

Slumping demand and surging mortgage rates are likely to lead to the slowest period for housing sales in 30 years, according to Goldman Sachs. Lurking over all the housing market, though, has been the surge in mortgage rates that have come along with the Federal Reserve's efforts to bring down inflation . Mortgage rates have risen in tandem, rocketing from around 3.8% when the Fed started tightening to more than 7.6% nationally now, according to Freddie Mac data. "We expect this 'lock-in' effect to push existing home sales even lower in the coming months and to limit any rebound next year," Walker wrote. Washington, DC CNN —US homebuilding bounced back in September, after dropping in August to the lowest levels since 2020 as mortgage rates climbed. Building permits dropped in September, falling 4.4% from August’s revised number to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.473 million. “Builders continue constructing smaller homes using less land, and offering incentives, but to build our way out of the housing shortage we’ll need mortgage rates well below current levels,” he said. Homebuilders are becoming increasingly anxious about persistently high mortgage rates and cooling demand, she said. “To keep buyers interested, many builders have been offering upgrades or buying down mortgage rates,” she said.

Foreign investors almost doubled their investment from a year ago to $2 billion in the first quarter of the year, the global real estate services company noted. According to latest data provided by CBRE, total foreign investments into Japan's real estate market has risen 45% in the first half of 2023, compared to the same period last year. The solid rebound in Japan's tourism sector following the ease in border restrictions has sparked a rise in hotel occupancies and hospitality investments, Knight Frank said in a recent September note.

Home purchase prices increased 4.6% on a year-over-year basis in July, up from a revised 3.2% increase in the prior month. June marked the first acceleration in annual price growth since February 2022, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) said. The report also showed prices rose moderately on a month-over-month basis, in line with the trend over the past quarter. "Regionally, all nine census divisions posted positive price appreciation over the last 12 months, although the Pacific and Mountain divisions experienced only modest growth," said Nataliya Polkovnichenko, FHFA's supervisory economist.
