Born, bred, toasted, buttered, jelly-jammed and honeyed in Harlem.”That’s how Audrey Smaltz, a former model and fashion industry veteran who turned 86 this month, introduced herself to me years ago at a Midtown Manhattan reception. She was the grande dame of the room, floating through it, incandescent, fun and unabashedly flirty. “I had fabulous men in my life,” she told me recently, but in 1999, the Olympic basketball star Gail Marquis, 17 years Smaltz’s junior, asked her out to dinner. Smaltz didn’t think of it as a date and said she had no interest in women at the time. But when Marquis kissed her good night, Smaltz recalled, “it was like kissing a man.” She said, “I couldn’t believe myself,” then laughed, punctuating the thought: “Whoa!”They married in 2011.

So what does midlife, and the midlife crisis, look like for them?

If the sleep apnea is severe and untreated, people have three times the risk of dying from any cause. People with severe sleep apnea who spent less time in deep, also known as slow-wave sleep, had more damage to the white matter of the brain than people who had more slow-wave sleep, according to the study. “The association with sleep apnea was only unveiled when we isolated severe cases, suggesting that mild to moderate sleep apnea may not be significantly associated with white matter changes,” he said. About 34% of the participants had mild sleep apnea, 32% had moderate and 34% had severe sleep apnea. People with sleep apnea, however, can have dozens of micro-awakenings during the night as they snore, snort or gasp for breath.

Beau, the addled midlife wreck played by Joaquin Phoenix in “Beau Is Afraid,” isn’t just afraid, he is terrorized: harassed, beaten, stabbed and even kidnapped in a surreal black comedy that often feels less like a conventional film than a three-hour panic attack. (In the hands of high-anxiety auteur Ari Aster, of “Hereditary” and “Midsommar” fame, consider that a compliment.) Thanks to his monstrous mother, he has become a man resigned to life without love or companionship. For Aster, it turns out, there was never a second choice. There was a feeling like, ‘Look, we’ll try, but we likely won’t be able to afford it.’”

For Women, Midlife Brain Fog Is Real. Here’s Why.

Blanking on someone’s name. Forgetting why you entered a room. Struggling to concentrate on a task. Women in their 40s and early 50s often notice declines in their memory, focus and ability to learn new things—symptoms sometimes called “brain fog.”
Things have been difficult for her family, she says, but one thing she isn’t worried about: a midlife crisis, looming just over the horizon. One of our questions was about whether they had experienced a midlife crisis and how they would define the term. Many people said they felt they couldn’t be having a midlife crisis, because there was no bourgeois numbness to rebel against. “Who has midlife crisis money?”The traditional midlife crisis, as presented in popular culture, at least, unfolds amid suburban ennui. We just increase our Lexapro.”Was the midlife crisis ever even real?
Midlife disappointment becomes a problem in much the same way as bankruptcy overtook Mike Campbell in “The Sun Also Rises”—gradually, then suddenly. Jim Gaffigan is an inspired choice to play its flabby, saggy embodiment in the quirky dramedy “Linoleum,” in which he plays a frustrated, 50-something children’s television-show host who is beginning to agree with everyone around him that his existence hasn’t added up to much. Mr. Gaffigan is a sneakily brilliant stand-up who deserves more opportunities to shine on the big screen. I wouldn’t cast him as Batman or Thor, but in the small subset of movies that remain centered on characters much like ourselves, he is underutilized. With his body-by-Pillsbury shape and his aura of being woefully familiar with defeat, he makes for a much more convincing option as an aggrieved Everyman than, say, George Clooney .
Millions of millennials could experience a midlife crisis over the next decade. But even if the midlife crisis persists among millennials, they're unlikely to respond to it the same way as prior generations. That said, there's some evidence that millennials' spending habits are actually a bit different than those of Gen X and boomers. So when the midlife crisis comes, millennials may respond by taking a big vacation rather than buying a sports car. The lower marriage rate among millennials is among the reasons they've also had fewer children than prior generations.
Colleges are creating new programs for older adults who are contemplating what to do next as they near the end of their careers. The programs are designed for midlife professionals who typically have at least two decades of experience. About eight exist so far, many at elite institutions such as Harvard University and Stanford University, with more schools developing their own offerings. One-year programs often range from $50,000 to $60,000 or more, depending on the institution, with discounts available to some.
New York CNN —Natural Light’s new cans will soon look a lot like their old ones. Drinkers will soon notice a retro-inspired makeover that mirrors the budget beer brand’s 1979 design, featuring a throwback logo, crest and colors. Left is the old design and the right is the "new" design hitting shelves in February. Natural Light sales have held “steady,” Stowe said, but noted “we definitely have room to grow.”For Natural Light to do that, the Anheuser-Busch (BUD)-owned brand is “widening its aperture,” Stowe said. “Natural Light’s decision could be in efforts to go the opposite way, and reach the less competitive audience of older adults,” she said.

Interest rates probably won't stay high, top economist Paul Krugman wrote in an op-ed. For one, higher rates are a lingering effect of the pandemic, when the government flooded the economy with stimulus money, Krugman said. Households are still spending leftover stimulus, which has supported high prices and therefore, higher interest rates this year. But those effects will eventually fade away – and, along with slowing investment demand, that will likely result in interest rates being dragged lower. Lower rates could potentially revive asset bubbles, though risk assets are feeling serious pain from today's high interest rates.

Researchers are testing several new drugs to treat depression and anxiety symptoms that women frequently experience during perimenopause, the years leading up to menopause. Mood changes are a common symptom of perimenopause, a transition before the last menstrual period that typically begins during a woman’s 40s. As many as one-third of women experience depressive symptoms during this time, research has found.
Anxiety and depression can hit women hard in midlife. A lot of them don’t realize perimenopause may be a cause—or that hormone therapy may be a treatment option. Mood changes are among the most common symptoms of perimenopause, a transition time before the last menstrual period that typically begins during a woman’s 40s. Some doctors say more women should be asking about treating those symptoms with hormone therapy and aren’t getting the care they should.

When I got my contract, my agent told me, "You're going to need to post on Instagram." I found myself thinking, 'If I have to post on Instagram, let me write'Dian Griesel. Being on social media has also generated work for me as an advisor to companies looking to understand the 50-and-up demographic. If I'm on set, that's an eight- or 10-hour day. It's not just millennials and Gen Z who are quitting above pre-pandemic levels. For some, it could be driven by a midlife crisis, in which extreme job stress peaks at age 45. For some, it could all come down to a midlife crisis. Record job openings, financial flexibility, and even a midlife crisis have nudged others to explore new opportunities. While these ages are often peak earnings years, it may not translate to job satisfaction — leading many to explore other job opportunities.
The Ayahuasca Diaries

But please understand: I didn't drink ayahuasca so I could write an article about it. I wrote an article about it so I could drink ayahuasca. I was desperate to drink ayahuasca — I had been for several months, in fact — and the formality of an assignment would help me out at home. Instead, a friend of a friend linked me up with an ayahuasca sangha, a Buddhist word for a spiritual community. I thought of my old friend, Scott, who, many years before, had declined an opportunity to drink ayahuasca.
