Rep. Tom Emmer nominated by GOP for House speaker
  + stars: | 2023-10-24 | by ( Spencer Kimball | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, a Republican from Minnesota, speaks to members of the media following a House Republican caucus meeting on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, US, on Monday, Oct. 23, 2023. Emmer, the Republican majority whip, prevailed over a crowded field of eight GOP candidates after several rounds of voting Tuesday morning. Interim Speaker Patrick McHenry has said the nominee could face a vote before the House floor as soon as Tuesday. It is unclear if Emmer can secure the 217 Republican votes needed on the House floor. He can only afford to lose four GOP votes, as Democrats have lined up in lockstep behind their nominee, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York.

CNN —Rep. Tom Emmer, the House majority whip whose bid for House speaker was thrown into immediate jeopardy Tuesday afternoon, has tried to balance an at-times moderate voting record while trying to appeal to the Donald Trump-aligned base of the Republican Party. The Minnesota Republican emerged Tuesday afternoon as House Republicans’ new speaker nominee in the scramble to succeed Kevin McCarthy. Several Republicans who oppose Emmer told CNN Tuesday they will not change their stance and are calling for a new candidate. As majority whip, Emmer has experience with keeping the GOP’s narrow majority in line. McCarthy has backed the Minnesota Republican for speaker and urged the conference to elect him by the end of the week.

Interim House Speaker Patrick McHenry of North Carolina said he wants the nominee to face a House vote as soon as Tuesday. His failure came after the party's original nominee, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana, bowed out of the race because he could not secure enough GOP votes. Meuser said Monday whoever wins the nomination needs to ensure that speaker's office is inclusive so the narrow GOP majority remains unified. The Pennsylvania Republican told Fox Business that Republicans' failure to elect a speaker has made the party "part of the dysfunction of Washington." US House Of Representatives | via ReutersRep. Historically, political realignment has occurred when groups of voters change their affiliation to a new political party or candidate, especially around presidential and midterm elections. Yet the period between 1852 and 1860 is crucial here, for it saw the last time a major political party collapsed (the Whig Party in 1854) and the dissolution of another political party (the Democratic Party in 1860). The 1924 Democratic Party famously went through 103 ballots before agreeing on a compromise candidate, John W. Davis of West Virginia. Of course, party realignment is a tricky thing since we only come to know that it has happened in hindsight. A failure to reach a majority consensus signals the doom of an American political party.

Tuesday marks three full weeks without a House speaker and 24 days until the government runs out of money, to say nothing of aid packages many lawmakers want for Israel and Ukraine. Most Republicans voted for all three men as speaker, but the outside edges of the party were too big to get a majority. Only two of the current speaker candidates supported the 2020 election results: Emmer and Scott. Four of the current speaker candidates voted no, including Sessions. But Trump’s power within the House GOP is limited.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Day 20 without a House speaker, and Republicans found themselves starting over on Monday — bumbling ahead with few ideas about who will lead, what they are fighting over and when they will get Congress working again. Nine lower-level Republican lawmakers are now running to be speaker, leader of the House and second in line to the presidency — none with any clear shot for the gavel. McCarthy himself calls the whole spectacle “embarrassing” for the House Republicans whose majority is being wasted away and for the U.S. government that cannot fully function. House Republicans entered the weekend without their leading speaker candidate, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, who dropped out of the race on Friday. "This is embarrassing for the Republican Party, embarrassing for the nation," former speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Ca., said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press." Former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney did not voice support for any specific candidate, saying on CNN's "State of the Union" that the current state of House Republican dysfunction is not surprising. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who served from 1995 to 1999, said the House Republicans are dragging their feet. Of the nine candidates in the speaker race so far, none are women.

Aside from McCarthy and Jordan, Republicans have also rejected their No. That plan would give more authority to Republican Representative Patrick McHenry, who is filling the speaker's chair on a temporary basis. He helped to engineer government shutdowns in 2013 and 2018 and helped to push Republican Speaker John Boehner into retirement in 2015. Rep. Jim Jordan failed a second attempt at being elected speaker on Wednesday after 22 Republicans voted against him. It has been more than two weeks since the ouster of the previous speaker, Rep. Kevin McCarthy. Photo: Jim Lo Scalzo/ShutterstockWASHINGTON—Republican speaker nominee Rep. Jim Jordan was set to fall short in a third round of voting to secure the gavel Friday morning, after struggling to win support from colleagues who have opposed his candidacy, likely leaving Republicans at a fresh impasse. While the Ohio conservative has campaigned as a speaker who can unite the party, he continues to face long odds, a full week after securing the GOP nomination and more than two weeks after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) was ousted. Republicans have no current fallback plan after rejecting a proposal to vote on giving more powers to Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R., N.C.).

Republicans who control the chamber appear no closer to resolving a leadership battle that has paralyzed the House for more than two weeks. ET (1400 GMT) vote, Jordan said the House needed to install a speaker so it could take up aid for Israel and other matters, but he did not predict victory. Jordan has failed to win the 217 votes needed to claim the speaker's gavel in votes on Tuesday and Wednesday. Republicans control the House by a 221-212 margin, and Jordan has not gotten more than 200 votes so far. Jim Jordan again failed to win the speakership during the third round of voting. There were 25 House Republicans who voted for someone other than Jordan – a higher number of GOP votes against him than in the first two failed votes in a sign that opposition to his bid is growing. In the first round of voting, 20 House Republicans voted for someone else. In the second round, that number rose to 22. Here's are the Republicans who did not vote for Jordan in the third round, and who they voted for instead:

Rep. Jim Jordan was again decisively defeated in his bid to become speaker on Friday, marking his third failed ballot this week and by the largest margin yet as his support continues to erode. Yet it remained unclear whether the divisive lawmaker would yield in his strong-armed bid for leadership amid a growing urgency for House Republicans to resolve the crisis they created. Twenty-five House Republicans voted against the Ohio Republican, growing by three votes since Wednesday and two in the first vote a day prior, as things are trending in the wrong direction for Jordan. Unlike McCarthy, Jordan has the backing of most House conservatives. Still, Jordan faces opposition from a number of sides – from moderates, from appropriators and from McCarthy and Majority Leader Steve Scalise allies, among others.

Worries are growing about how much the turmoil could cost the global economy. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, hit a three-week high this on Fridayfears that a military escalation could disrupt already tight supplies. In a speech largely focused on inflation, interest rates and economic growth, Jay Powell, the central bank’s chair, warned on Thursday that “geopolitical tensions are highly elevated and pose important risks to global economic activity.”The Middle East is becoming a wild card for the global economy. That would probably sap growth but might also slow the economy enough to negate the need for an additional interest-rate increase. The measures were announced days after the U.S. imposed tighter restrictions on sales of more advanced semiconductors to China.

CNN —Republican Rep. Jim Jordan is pressing ahead with his speaker bid despite facing stiff opposition from within his own party and no clear path to win the gavel. In a news conference Friday morning, Jordan made it clear he has no plans to abandon his bid. We can’t open the House until we get a speaker,” Jordan said. PinnedRepresentative Jim Jordan of Ohio failed for a third time on Friday morning to win election as House speaker, leaving his party with no consensus on a way forward and the chamber paralyzed in the face of growing pressure to get back to business. Three Republicans from swing districts won by President Biden — Representative Marc Molinaro of New York, Representative Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Representative Tom Kean of New Jersey — abandoned Mr. Jordan after supporting him earlier. There is no consensus among Republicans about an alternative candidate to Mr. Jordan, who has yet to show any inclination to drop out of the race. The House has been in a state of chaos for 18 days after hard-right rebels ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Mr. Jordan then received his party’s nomination to be speaker, but he failed to win the post in votes by the full House on Tuesday and Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Despite deepening opposition, Rep. Jim Jordan is expected to try a third vote to become House speaker, even as his Republican colleagues are explicitly warning the hard-edged ally of Donald Trump that no more threats or promises can win over their support. After two failed votes, Jordan's third attempt at the gavel is not expected to end any better. Jordan had backed the temporary speaker plan as a way to allow more time to shore up support in his own reach for the gavel. What this majority has done is prove it’s not a normal majority.”What was clear was that Jordan’s path to become House speaker was almost certainly collapsing. With Republicans in majority control of the House, 221-212, it appears there is no Republican candidate who can win a clear majority, 217 votes, to become speaker.
