NEW DELHI, Feb 28 (Reuters) - New Delhi city authorities have warned Uber (UBER.N) and its rival Ola for allegedly violating local transport rules by providing two-wheeler bike taxis, a senior government official told Reuters on Tuesday. As of Tuesday, bike taxis continue to be available for booking on Uber and Ola apps in New Delhi. Uber says in 2022, more than 1.9 million trips took place to and from metro rail stations in Delhi on Uber Moto, its bike taxi service. For drivers of bike taxis, the penalties could be as high as 10,000 rupees ($121) and a jail term of up to one year. The enforcement of rules for bike taxis by Delhi government follows similar moves by Maharashtra and Karnataka states.

Sugar mills in Maharashtra were operational until mid-June in 2021/22 as they were struggling to harvest a record crop. LOWER EXPORTSIn 2021/22 Maharashtra produced a record 13.7 million tonnes, higher than the initial estimate of 11.2 million tonnes, allowing New Delhi to export a record 11.2 million tonnes. As the sugar exports quota was nearly exhausted, the Indian Sugar Mills Association and other trade bodies were requesting the government to allow additional exports of up to 4 million tonnes. India mainly exports sugar to Indonesia, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Sudan, Somalia and the United Arab Emirates.

"If prices keep increasing, rural consumers will move towards smaller pack sizes since there's a strain on wallets," said Alok Shah, a consumer analyst at India's Ambit Capital. Shah said poorer rural consumers could move to cheaper locally-made products instead of those produced by Unilever. HUL, the biggest consumer company in India by sales, said last January that demand in rural India - where average incomes are lower than urban areas - had begun to slow as prices rose. Unilever did not respond to questions on how much of its revenues come from rural consumers. HUL Chief Executive Sanjiv Mehta said, however, the company had begun seeing signs of a pick up in rural sales as inflation eases and farm incomes rise again.

GM and the factory workers - who allege illegal termination after the company decided to exit - have been locked in legal battles since 2021. The latest filing signals an escalation in the dispute as workers accuse GM's India unit and its executives, including CEO Mary Barra, of failing to follow court orders. In its earlier court filings, it has said the industrial court acted beyond its power in ordering the compensation. The union disagreed, and said GM continues to "blatantly violate" the industrial court's order by not paying the workers a single cent. After that, GM ceased all operations and moved to close the plant in Maharashtra, but it has not received permission.
