In 1948, Jews realized their wildly improbable dream of a state, and Palestinians experienced the mass flight and expulsion called the Nakba, or catastrophe. It’s only in 1948 that the Arabs become Palestinians and the Jews become Israelis. Many Jews became lower-level officers during World War II, and they brought their new military expertise to the 1948 war. And underpinning that racism is what Wilkerson refers to as a caste system so effective at preserving the domination of White people over everyone else that the Nazis were inspired by it. Caste, Wilkerson says, is the system that creates subjugation. We watch Isabel exploring Germany’s poignant memorials to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust, discussing in one scene how successfully post-war Germany condemned its 12-year caste system to the past. Among Black Americans, attitudes to race are evolving. Every single one of us has skin in the game, for, as Wilkerson points out, the caste system diminishes us all, wherever we may sit in its fabricated hierarchy.

The Israeli war cabinet member and former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, as he attended the funeral of his son Gal Meir Eisenkot in December. General Eisenkot has also paid a devastating personal price in the war: His 25-year-old son, Master Sgt. In the televised interview, which was prerecorded, General Eisenkot said Mr. Netanyahu carries “sharp and clear” responsibility for the country’s failure to protect its citizens on Oct. 7. Early in the war, Israeli officials weighed whether to launch a pre-emptive strike against Hezbollah — risking a two-front war that deeply concerned U.S. and Israeli military planners. The Israeli public must head to the polls “within months,” General Eisenkot said.

U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein has been leading a diplomatic outreach to restore security at the Israel-Lebanon frontier as the wider region teeters dangerously towards a major escalation of the conflict ignited by the Gaza war. Israel has also said it wants to avoid war, but both sides say they are ready to fight if necessary. Branded a terrorist organisation by Washington, Hezbollah has not been directly involved in talks, three Lebanese officials and a European diplomat said. Hezbollah has dismissed both ideas as unrealistic, the Lebanese officials and the diplomat said. Iran's foreign minister on Wednesday said attacks against Israel and its interests by the "Axis of Resistance" will stop if the Gaza war ends.

An Israeli soccer player was briefly detained by the Turkish authorities and suspended by his club after he displayed a message of support for Israel during a game on Sunday. The player, Sagiv Jehezkel, a 28-year-old wing for the top-division club Antalyaspor, flashed the message after he scored the tying goal in a match. To celebrate, Mr. Jehezkel jogged to the corner of the field, where photographers were positioned, and pointed to a message on a band of tape on his left wrist. If the aid is postponed, "it gives the big risk that we can be in the same position to which we're located now," he said, addressing the audience in English. COMEDY BOOK: How Comedy Conquered Culture — and the Magic That Makes It Work, by Jesse David FoxOUTRAGEOUS: A History of Showbiz and the Culture Wars, by Kliph NesteroffDid you hear the one about cancel culture? But two new books share an exasperation with the common sentiment that there’s never been a worse time to express oneself than the present. Kliph Nesteroff’s fact-packed “Outrageous: A History of Showbiz and the Culture Wars” finds American entertainers in a perpetual state of despair over the censorious climate of their day — whatever day it happens to be. To Jesse David Fox, the author of “Comedy Book,” the risk of backlash is part of the point. It’s what makes it more exciting than watching a bunch of men sprinting with helmets on.”

Ukraine is already racing to catch up with Russia when it comes to electronic warfare. Electronic warfare, or EW, involves weapons or tactics using the electromagnetic spectrum. Pavlo Petrychenko, drone commander with Ukraine’s 59th Motorized Brigade, says destroying Russia's electronic warfare systems is crucial to Ukraine's war effort. Otherwise, there’s a real risk that electronic warfare systems can work against you, downing your own drones, Fedorov added. It’s a future where “electronic warfare capabilities, tactics are integrated into conventional force operations,” she added.

Ukrainian commandos say they captured a Russian radar they're now using to track Moscow's warships. AdvertisementUkrainian special forces say they've captured quite a few "trophies" during their daring amphibious raids of Russian oil platforms, according to a new report. One such prize is a sophisticated long-range radar that Ukraine is now using to track Russian warships, giving them a useful tool in the Black Sea fight. Now, Ukraine says it's repurposing it to track Russian activity, Dmytro Linko, the commander of Stugna, told The War Zone. The amphibious raids are just one example of Ukraine's demonstrated ability to cause chaos far from the front lines.

Known as a passionate and provocative theater advocate who pushed for boundary-breaking works and for classics to be adventurously modernized, Brustein founded both the Yale Repertory Theatre and the American Repertory Theatre at Harvard. He was dean of the Yale School of Drama from 1966-1979 and during that time founded the Yale Repertory Theatre. “They'll have an unresolved experience.”After a painful, highly publicized dismissal from Yale, Brustein in 1979 switched to Harvard, where he taught English and founded the American Repertory Theatre in 1980. At both Yale Rep and A.R.T., Brustein told The Boston Globe in 2012, he embraced popular theater with a nationalistic streak: “We were trying to liberate American theater from its British overseers. The light, absurd comedy, which gently mocks the lavishness of other musicals, premiered in 1994 at the American Repertory Theatre and was close to making it to Broadway.

Unlike some other Palestinian factions, Hamas refuses to engage with Israel and does not recognize its right to exist. Palestinian Hamas members in Gaza City ride an armored vehicle seized from Fatah, a rival Palestinian political party, during a celebration rally in June 2007. About 100 wives, mothers, children and relatives of Ukrainian soldiers attended a demonstration in the capital, Kyiv. Even so, U.S. officials say that Russian forces are experiencing morale problems as another winter campaign looms. The latest hot spot draining resources is Avdiivka, a city in the eastern Donetsk region that Russian forces partially occupy. The Washington-based think tank noted that Ukrainian military officials said that around 5,000 Russian soldiers have been killed and wounded, and 400 armored vehicles lost in the area since Oct. 10. Satellite images show the Russian military lost at least 109 military vehicles, mostly armored fighting vehicles and tanks, near Avdiivika between Oct. 10 and 20, the institute said.
