They comprise what's called a "Blue Zone," an area of the world where people tend to live exceptionally long lives. Longevity researcher Dr. Giovanni Mario Pes and his colleagues discovered that happy, productive centenarians were not outliers in this part of Sardinia. Here are some practices that may be linked to their exceptional longevity — and may help the rest of us live longer, healthier lives. Sardinians 'eat fresh, home-cooked meals'You won't find most elders in this Blue Zone chomping on a fast-food hamburger with one hand on a steering wheel. SINGAPORE — Global markets are severely overplaying an oil supply glut, said Jeff Currie, chief strategy officer of energy pathways at private equity giant Carlyle. China's crude oil imports in 2023 had notched a record high. China's oil demand has been declining on the back of a slump in industrial inputs, according the International Energy Agency. On the supply side, black oil production in the U.S., one of the world's top crude oil producers, has been "flat" this year, Currie said. Black oils include crude oil, fuel oil, furnace oil, asphalt and tar.

Cesc Maymo | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesLONDON — Amazon Web Services (AWS), the U.S. e-commerce giant's cloud division, announced plans to invest £8 billion ($10.45 billion) over the next five years to build and operate data centers in the U.K. as it ramps up its cloud computing efforts in the country. "So this will go toward helping our customers to really be able to harness cloud computing, because you need the data centers to be able to actually provide cloud computing for our customers." AWS, along with other cloud players, has been investing heavily in infrastructure, such as data centers and Nvidia chips, in order to train and run AI models. AWS competes with Microsoft and Google in the U.K. and its investment continues the company's focus on expansion in Europe. Massimo Di Vita | Mondadori Portfolio | Getty ImagesThe European Union needs up to 800 billion euros ($884 billion) in additional investment per year to meet its key competitiveness and climate targets, according to a report from economist and politician Mario Draghi. The bloc's goals of bolstering its geopolitical relevance, social equality and decarbonization are being threatened by weak economic growth and productivity compared with the U.S. and China, the report states. The EU is meanwhile suffering an "innovation deficit" which must be tackled through reforms to research and development funding and policy, the report states. To fast-track policymaking, the report proposes limiting the voting items that require support from an absolute majority of member states. Funding questionPublic and private investments are being hindered by the size of the EU budget, its lack of focus and its risk aversion, the Draghi report says.

Saudi Minister of Investment Khalid al-Falih pushed back against skepticism over the country's economic diversification plan, as Riyadh touts "green shoring" investment opportunities to woo foreign financing. The Saudi minister on Saturday said that, eight years into manifesting Vision 2030, the kingdom is now "more committed, more determined" to the program and has already implemented or is about to complete 87% of its targets. The number of foreign investment licenses issued in Saudi Arabia nearly doubled in 2023, the IMF noted, with government data pointing to a 5.6% annual increase in net flows of foreign direct investment in the first quarter. Concerns have nevertheless lingered over the potential uncertainty and unpredictability of the kingdom's legal framework and its dispute resolution system for foreign investment. Al-Falih insisted that Saudi Arabia boasts predictability, as well as domestic political and economic stability.

The European Union has successfully avoided the "terrible prophecies" that threatened its economy in recent years, but must still contend with Russia's war in Ukraine and a tenuous trade relationship with China, outgoing European Commissioner for Economy Paolo Gentiloni said Saturday. A former prime minister of Italy, Gentiloni has served as the European Commissioner for Economy under EC President Ursula von der Leyen since December 2019. Gentiloni will not be returning for a second term as commissioner following Von der Leyen's tumultuous re-election as president — but he has laid out the economic picture that awaits his imminent successor. "The economy is growing, slowly, but growing. And the risks of differences among the European Union, that was very high when the pandemic happened, are very limited," he noted.

The world’s most remarkable tennis courts

But to American photographer and journalist Nick Pachelli, a tennis court is the harmonious union of surface, sound, and spectators, complemented by the natural elements and the inherent intensity of tennis. “Tennis is our only sport where the canvas on which we play can change so dramatically,” Pachelli, a former top junior tennis player himself, told CNN, highlighting each court’s “unique persona,” as he describes in his new photobook, The Tennis Court. During more than 500 days of travel, Pachelli visited over a thousand courts (of the roughly 200 in the book), crisscrossing more than 250 cities and towns in his pursuit of spotlighting the world’s most aesthetic, esteemed, and even idiosyncratic tennis courts. Reached by a few hundred steps, the tennis court at Hotel Il San Pietro Di Positano in Italy is between the cliff face and the pebble beach. The Courts at Borrego Springs in California describe themselves as 'four tennis courts, a clubhouse and a pool in the middle of nowhere."

Sound and lightYet, the IUCN acknowledges that the Iberian lynx remains threatened. In the 1980s, roadkill played a key role in lynx mortality in the Doñana area (a prominent spot for the Iberian lynx) accounting for almost 17% of deaths. That may not sound like much, but Breitenmoser explains that given that lynx populations were critically endangered at the time, the impact was significant. Ortiz says that in a five-year timeframe, almost €4.5 million ($5 million) will be spent on improving habitats and nearly €2.9 million ($3.2 million) on boosting connectivity, including virtual fences. Innovation aside, for Ortiz the future of the Iberian lynx depends on co-operation.
