Read previewMichael Hartnett, Bank of America's top global strategist, thinks a no-landing scenario is the most-likely outcome for the US economy in the months ahead. That means the labor market would remain strong, but inflation would also stay above the Federal Reserve's long-term goal of 2%. While that's fine for now, Hartnett warns it's a path that eventually leads to trouble for the economy and stocks. "We say rising no landing risks = rising hard landing risks," Hartnett said in an April 11 note. The fund's price dipped below its 200-day moving average in 2020 and 2022, when the economy slowed and stocks underperformed.

Since late October last year, the S&P 500 has risen as much as 27% on strong economic data and excitement about AI. Losses were steepest last week when Iran fired missiles at Israel, exacerbating regional and global tensions. But as more labor market and inflation data has come out, investors now believe a cut is off the table until at least July. The S&P 500 has now dipped below its 20-day moving average, like it did last summer when yields rose above 4.35%. "The VIX, SKEW and Put/Call Ratio all indicate that sophisticated investors are on edge and volatility could explode to 52-week highs in the weeks ahead," Essaye said.

I'll discuss a bearish options hedge on a member of the chip sector that appears to be breaking down. Below is a 6-month daily chart of the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) , which monitors the chip sector. Among the semiconductor stocks, Micron (MU) stands out as a notable example. However, since securities can remain overbought for extended periods, it's important to wait for the RSI to dip below 70 before considering a bearish trade setup. The Trade Setup: The trade structure I am using here is called a "bear put spread" also known as "put debit spread".

This week, ADBE flashed the dreaded "death cross" signal — a pattern that typically points to further downside — with the 50-day moving average crossing down through the 200-day moving average. Adobe created a classic double top pattern in January, when the stock retested the December 2023 high around $630 and failed to break above this resistance level. It's worth noting that the death cross observed this week happened only after the stock had established a clear downtrend of lower highs and lower lows. This support level, just below $500, aligns well with the September 2023 price low. Back in 2022, a similar death cross resulted in an additional 45% drop for Adobe before the eventual low was established.

We've seen a noticeable uptick in volume and interest in Estee Lauder (EL) , after struggling significantly for the last two years to formulate a turnaround. Has the global makeup giant finally bottomed and proven that its business is investable again? In my opinion, with its strong expected future growth and high margins, EL is quite undervalued and offers an attractive risk/reward for investors to add exposure now in your portfolio. Tuesday's market sell-off sticks out like a sore thumb amid this year's rally to all-time highs, leaving traders to wonder if it could be the start of a bigger downtrend. That marks a turn from the strong first quarter, during which nearly two out of every five trading days pushed the benchmark S & P 500 to a record close, according to Bespoke Investment Group. To profit from this possibility, here's an options trade that bets against the housing market. US10Y YTD mountain U.S. 10-year Treasury yield so far in 2024 I'm contemplating a bearish trade on Lowe's (LOW) within the consumer discretionary sector. DMI (Directional Movement Index): When the DI+ (green line) is above DI- (red line), the stock is in an uptrend. The trade structure I am using here is called a "bear put spread" also known as "put debit spread". The yen has been on a downtrend despite the BOJ's decision on March 19 to end eight years of negative interest rates. Japanese Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki said on Monday there were some speculative moves in the currency market that did not reflect economic fundamentals, repeating his warning against excessive yen declines. "We will watch currency market developments with a strong sense of urgency, and will respond appropriately against excessive moves without ruling out any options," Suzuki told parliament. Suzuki said various factors are driving currency moves such as the Bank of Japan's decision to end negative interest rates, Japan's current account balance, price moves, geopolitical risks, as well as market players' sentiment and speculative trades. "As for the yen's recent declines, we believe there are some speculative moves that do not reflect fundamentals when taking into account domestic and overseas economic as well as price developments," he said.

If you're looking for your bitcoin to go to the moon, the window of opportunity may be slowly closing, according to BlackRock. "Certainly, returns going forward will come down," he said at the Bitcoin Investor Day conference in New York City Friday. That demand was "massive and clear" in 2023, when BlackRock filed to launch its iShares Bitcoin Trust. "I don't think we've seen the end of cycles in bitcoin," Mitchnick said. "[With] bitcoin, when the price goes up, the probabilities of success and adoption in some senses, as digital gold, are also changing," he said.

Arm Holdings is a UK-based semiconductor and software design company that has been around for quite some time and been through multiple corporate events, changes of ownership and multiple large investors. The majority shareholder of Arm (ARM) is Japanese conglomerate Softbank, which bought the company in 2016 before taking it public again on the Nasdaq in 2023. The stock formed a base into March, held $120-area support and is now mounting another attack after breaking the gray dotted downtrend resistance/trigger level at $135. I do not yet hold the stock, but I am looking to add to our holdings at current levels and will require the stock to remain above that $135 breakout level now serving as support. The unemployment rate rose to 3.9% in February after holding at 3.7% for three straight months, the data showed. The euro got a lift this week as the dollar came under pressure after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell sounded more confident about cutting interest rates in coming months. Currencies typically weaken if central banks lower interest rates. Against the yen, the dollar was 0.68% lower at 147.05 yen, its weakest since Feb. 2. Firming hopes that interest rates in the U.S. and Europe will start to fall in June also helped prop up the risk-sensitive Australian and New Zealand dollars.

There are various ETFs that hold recent IPOs, including the Renaissance Capital Greenwich Funds' Renaissance IPO ETF (IPO) . The 200-day moving average is the most popular long-term moving average and one of the best long-term trend indicators. The IPO ETF bounced from the line last fall and has been trading above it through the first two months of 2024. Seeing IPO stay above the upward sloping 200-day moving average is the best-case scenario. Two IPO Holdings Investors should be aware the IPO ETF isn't very liquid, meaning that its average daily volume isn't robust.

It has been a tough year thus far for small-cap stocks, but Bank of America has some fresh ideas for finding value in the space. Despite a bounce this month, the Russell 2000 index of small-cap stocks has slipped a fraction this year while the large-cap S & P 500 has climbed almost 7%. Against that underperformance, Bank of America strategist Jill Carey Hall recently screened for small-cap value names with strong fundamentals. She scanned the Russell 2000 for profitable stocks that are in the top 20th percentile on one or more valuation metrics, including price-to-book, price-to-earnings and enterprise value-to-sales ratios. The stock placed within the top 20% of the Russell 2000 when looking at the enterprise value to sales ratio.

An ETF that's down 80% from its all-time high or one that is up 110% from its all-time low? Both of these outlandish percent moves describe the AdvisorShares Pure US Cannabis ETF (MSOS) , which is down 80% from its February '21 high and now up 110% from its October '23 low. The only discernable point here is the spike in early February'21, which lined up exactly with the ETF's all-time high. The ETF had flirted with piercing this line before – most recently this past fall - but each attempt failed before 2024. Any index, ETF or stock that's in a long-term uptrend is trading above an upward sloping 200-day moving average.

Jason Lee | APBEIJING — Chinese stocks will likely climb by at least 10% in coming days as authorities signal concerted support efforts, said Marko Papic, partner and chief strategist at Clocktower Group. Mainland Chinese stocks traded mostly higher Wednesday, following gains on Tuesday. A "10% to 15% rally in Chinese equities is likely in coming trading days," he said. Papic said he's been bearish on Chinese stocks for the past 12 months, and didn't rule out the possibility the latest rally "could be a dead cat bounce." Chinese stocks are still down for the year so far, following a 2023 marked by losses.

Of the mega-cap growth stocks, Apple (AAPL) has certainly been a bit of a technical outlier in recent months. That downtrend in Q2 began with a gap below the 50-day moving average in early August and continued with a number of failed attempts to regain that 50-day moving average on the way down. Chart suggests exhaustion Over the last three months, Apple has basically bounced back and forth between retests of the July high of around $198 and the 200-day moving average. This bearish momentum divergence suggests exhaustion of upside momentum and leaves me skeptical of further upside here.
