Once a relatively rare move for public officials, threatening a libel suit is fast becoming a go-to tool for some who hope to influence public narratives, if not right wrongs. The odds that any elected official or candidate emerges victorious in a defamation suit are exceedingly low. Trump has a longstanding pattern of threatening libel actions that he either does not bring or does not continue. Others, including recent Trump campaign lawsuits against the Times and CNN, have been filed but dismissed by judges in state and federal courts. Trump knows that this is about the court of public opinion more than it is about the court of law.
Actor Constance Wu opened up about her suicide attempt in a tearful conversation on Jada Pinkett Smith’s show “Red Table Talk,” divulging what led to the incident. Wu said she felt like she couldn’t speak up about the harassment. Nadia Kim, a professor of sociology and of Asian and Asian American studies at Loyola Marymount University, said on the panel that the lack of Asian American representation makes it harder. “Because there are so few Asian American stars, there is incredible pressure put on these actors, like Constance Wu, to be perfect,” she said. If you or someone you know is in crisis, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255, text HOME to 741741 or visit SpeakingOfSuicide.com/resources for additional resources.
Apple filed two patents in Singapore early in 2020, relating to drones and their control systems. Their filing out of the US and delayed publication suggests Apple may be trying to keep them quiet. The giant had previously filed two other patent applications, indicating some effort had been made to keep the project quiet. It can delay the date that a patent application is made public, and it can submit the application in another country. Both of these patents were originally filed in Singapore, according to Patently Apple.
