“We have this very organic, very real, very palpable energy from people that want to support the ticket,” said Dan Kanninen, the Harris campaign’s battleground states director. Last week in Nevada, 1,000 of the 5,010 volunteer sign-ups were for the next day to join a series of weekly events the campaign holds on Sundays, a campaign official said. The campaign official said the burst of sign-ups made Sunday the biggest day yet for the weekly series. Harris’ campaign sees the moment of enthusiasm as one to build on, not squander. Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, D-Del., a national co-chair of the Harris campaign, also said the campaign has always had a plan to keep fighting until Election Day.

WASHINGTON — Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign is hiring Nasrina Bargzie to lead outreach to Muslim and Arab voters, according to a campaign official who first shared details of the plan with NBC News — a move focused on a key constituency that soured on President Joe Biden over his support of Israel. Bargzie worked in Harris’ White House office until July as a policy adviser on Muslim, Arab and Gaza-related issues, as well as reproductive rights, voting and democracy, the campaign official said. Bargzie will focus on talking to Muslim and Arab communities as voters wait to see whether Harris will lay out a different approach to the Middle East and Israel from Biden’s. The Black Muslim Leadership Council Fund, a national Muslim organization that had declared itself “uncommitted” on Biden’s re-election bid, announced this month it was endorsing Harris. Salima Suswell, the founder and chief executive of the Black Muslim Leadership Council Fund, praised Harris.

New York CNN —Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued General Motors Tuesday, alleging the carmaker illegally collected and sold drivers’ data to insurance companies without their consent or knowledge, according to a release from the AG’s office. The suit said those two companies then sold these scores to insurance companies. Insurance companies can use data to see how many times people exceeded a speed limit or obeyed other traffic laws. But the attorney general’s office claimed GM “deceived” its Texan customers by encouraging them to enroll in programs such as OnStar Smart Driver. But by agreeing to join these programs, customers also unknowingly agreed to the collection and sale of their data, the attorney general’s office said.

For weeks, the signs did not look good for Kamala Harris in Michigan. The leader of a well-to-do neighborhood association told me that the way Ms. Harris got nominated resembled “entrapment.” And, at a street fair, I chatted with Tamika Daniels, an activist who was working to register formerly incarcerated people to vote. Ms. Daniels expressed skepticism about Ms. Harris because the vice president had once been a prosecutor. There was no sign of such skepticism at the Harris rally near the Detroit airport last Wednesday, where roughly 15,000 excited people waited hours to see her. If the Harris campaign is unable to address this thorny issue in a way that feels like substance, then Democrats may not get the unity they’ll need to win in November.

Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz, the Minnesota governor, have quickly made the Affordable Care Act central to their campaign, raising the specter of another Republican repeal effort next year if former President Donald J. Trump wins the White House. “If Donald Trump gets the chance, he will end the Affordable Care Act and take us back to a time when insurance companies had the power to deny people with pre-existing conditions,” Ms. Harris said at a rally in Philadelphia last week as she introduced Mr. Walz as her running mate. “You remember what that was like?”The next day, Mr. Walz said at a rally in Detroit that Mr. Trump would continue trying to undermine the 2010 health law because “he doesn’t care.”

When President Biden campaigned in Michigan last month, Representative Elissa Slotkin, the Democrats’ nominee for the state’s open Senate seat, was nowhere to be found. But on Wednesday night, just weeks after that no-show, Ms. Slotkin announced her full-throated support for her party’s new presidential ticket at a Detroit rally. Tim Walz of Minnesota, Ms. Slotkin concluded her speech by delivering her final punch at the Republicans’ vice-presidential nominee, Senator JD Vance of Ohio. Ms. Slotkin is not alone in recognizing the new political landscape since Mr. Biden decided to end his re-election bid. The new energy and rapid coalescing of Democrats behind Ms. Harris and Mr. Walz have drastically changed the strategies of both Democrats and Republicans alike in down-ballot races.

Former President Donald J. Trump has taken his new obsession with the large crowds that Vice President Kamala Harris is drawing at her rallies to new heights, falsely declaring in a series of social media posts on Sunday that she had used artificial intelligence to create images and videos of fake crowds. The crowds at Ms. Harris’s events, including one in Detroit outside an airplane hangar, were witnessed by thousands of people and news outlets, including The New York Times, and the number of attendees claimed by her campaign is in line with what was visible on the ground. Mr. Trump falsely wrote on his social media site, Truth Social, that “there was nobody at the plane, and she ‘A.I.’d’ it.”A spokesman for the Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment. Mr. Trump has struggled to find his political footing in the weeks since President Biden decided to step aside and Ms. Harris replaced him atop the Democratic ticket: Mr. Trump questioned Ms. Harris’s racial identity at a conference for Black journalists, he later attacked Brian Kemp, the popular Republican governor in the key swing state of Georgia, and he has seen new polling that puts him behind Ms. Harris in several key states. The Harris campaign has begun to mock Mr. Trump for his frustration over her crowds, one of which, it said, topped 15,000 people at an event in the Phoenix area on Friday.

A man arrested in May after he was accused of fatally punching a 67-year-old driver in a road rage incident has now been charged in the murder of a beloved Detroit neurosurgeon found dead in his home last year. Desmond Burks, 34, was charged this week with first-degree murder, felony murder, larceny and other crimes in the April 2023 shooting of Dr. Devon Hoover. The murder rocked the community, and many people including former patients, family members and friends expressed their shock and grief. A Facebook page titled “Justice for Dr. Devon Hoover” was inundated with memories of the doctor. When authorities charged Burks in Hoover’s death, he had already been in jail on a second-degree murder charge in the death of Reda Saleh.

What comes next could hinge on who gets to oversee labor relations after the election. The National Labor Relations Board — which polices unfair labor practices and mediates worker-management disputes — has become an aggressive union booster under Biden. While the agency’s policies typically shift depending on who’s in the White House, the change has been pronounced, labor experts and former NLRB staffers say. Before joining the law firm in 2022, White worked for a decade at a regional NLRB field office under the Obama, Trump and Biden administrations. Last year, the NLRB overturned a 50-year precedent, requiring employers to recognize a union if most workers sign authorization cards for one.

DETROIT — The case against a man accused of killing of a Detroit synagogue leader collapsed Friday as a judge dismissed a remaining murder charge, three weeks after a jury cleared him of a similar but separate charge. Prosecutors acknowledged that the pending murder charge probably had to be dismissed, but it still was a blow in the highly publicized case. But it couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict on a separate charge of felony murder, which in Michigan is murder committed during another crime. The judge ruled out a second trial Friday, based on a 2009 U.S. Supreme Court decision involving partial jury verdicts. "I couldn't ... disagree more strongly," Harris told reporters in Arizona, referring to the Republican presidential nominee's comments. "The Fed is an independent entity, and as president, I would never interfere in the decisions that the Fed makes." With just 87 days until the election, the vice president also told reporters that she is preparing to unveil an official economic policy platform in the coming days. Harris' comments drew a stark contrast between her and Trump, who said this week that the president should "have at least [a] say" in Fed policy.

DETROIT — Automaker Stellantis plans to indefinitely lay off up to 2,450 U.S. factory workers later this year as it discontinues production of an older version of its Ram 1500 pickup truck in Michigan. It is produced alongside the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant, located near Detroit. The current Ram 1500, which was recently updated for the 2025 model year, is produced at a nearby plant. “With the introduction of the new Ram 1500, production of the Ram 1500 Classic at the Warren [Michigan] Truck Assembly Plant will come to an end later this year,” the company said in an emailed statement. The discontinuation of the Ram 1500 “Classic” vehicle is not unexpected, but the company has not announced a vehicle to replace the truck.

Green Party nominee Jill Stein has been recruiting Palestinian Americans to be her vice presidential running mate as the left-wing presidential candidate looks to exploit the community’s frustrations with Democrats' support for Israel during its war in Gaza.
