In September 2018, 50,568 migrants tried to cross the southern border between legal ports of entry. A year later, 52,546 immigrants tried to cross, and in September 2020, the number was 54,771. This September’s preliminary total of about 54,000 attempted illegal crossings also includes an unspecified number of apprehensions at the northern U.S. border. Northern crossings have long been a tiny fraction of southern border crossings, though they have risen in 2024. It is not yet known how many immigrants came into the U.S. in the same period legally through newly created pathways established by the Biden administration.

Foreign adversaries will try to shake Americans’ confidence in the legitimacy of election results in November by giving voice to false claims or spreading their own disinformation about ballot counting, U.S. intelligence officials said Tuesday. In its latest assessment of foreign threats to the election, intelligence officials said the main foreign powers seeking to shape the outcome of the vote — Russia, China and Iran — also were focusing on meddling in congressional and state races. China’s election influence efforts were focused on “tens” of races, with Beijing denigrating particular candidates with a variety of social media and other online activities, the intelligence official added. Officials also said foreign adversaries are getting more skilled at using Americans to spread their manufactured falsehoods. Intelligence officials reiterated that Russia’s disinformation campaign is directed at undermining Vice President Kamala Harris and her fellow Democrats as Moscow seeks to undercut Western support for Ukraine.

Luis Tiant, a Cuban-born right-hander who was one of baseball’s most entertaining and charismatic pitchers, and whose personal story was among the game’s most poignant, died on Tuesday. His death was announced by the Boston Red Sox, for whom he pitched in the 1970s. The team did not say where he died or cite the cause. El Tiante, as he was known on the sports pages — or Loo-ee! as stadiums full of fans would often chant while he was on the mound — won 229 games over 19 big-league seasons, playing for teams in six cities, notably Cleveland and Boston, where he led the Red Sox to a World Series and became one of the most beloved players in the team’s storied history.

Hurricane Milton is expected to continue to develop rapidly as it soaks up its natural fuel, warm water in the Gulf of Mexico. It could be pushing out sustained winds of 145 mph by them, according to its projections, making it a Category 4 hurricane. Rain, strong winds and possible storm surges were expected to begin Tuesday night along Florida’s west coast, according to NBC News meteorologists. Up to 8 inches of rain was forecast, with storm surges of 6 feet and more possible for coastal cities, they said. By late afternoon Saturday, Tropical Depression 14 had become Tropical Storm Milton, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Tropical Storm Milton rapidly intensified into a Category 1 hurricane Sunday with its path aimed at Florida, less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene made landfall in the state. The storm debuted as a hurricane Monday afternoon after producing sustained winds of 80 mph and continued to strengthen by drawing fuel from the Gulf of Mexico's sultry waters. Forecasters said Milton was likely to reach major hurricane status, denoting a Category 3, 4, or 5 storm Monday. It was pushing out maximum sustained winds estimated to be 80 mph, with some higher gusts, the hurricane center said, and moving east at 6 mph. Tropical Storm Milton formed in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico Saturday morning, just hours after it became a tropical depression, , according to the National Hurricane Center. This new storm formation comes less than 10 days after Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida, and is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane, bringing life-threatening conditions to the state's west coast next week. Maximum sustained winds from Tropical Storm Milton are estimated to be 40 miles per hour with higher gusts, the NHC said. Hurricane and storm surge watches will likely be required for certain regions of Florida on Sunday, many of which have just been hard-hit by Hurricane Helene. The National Weather Service placed the region in the potential path of Tropical Storm Milton, although it is still too early to tell how the storm will impact the county.

CNN —The Biden administration won’t extend legal permissions for certain migrants from Nicaragua, Cuba, Venezuela and Haiti provided through a temporary humanitarian program designed to curb illegal border crossings, requiring them to seek other legal means to remain in the United States, according to the Department of Homeland Security. The program required that these migrants have a sponsor in the US, undergo screening and vetting, and complete vaccinations. The program is still available to new applicants from the four countries, though the administration briefly paused it this summer over concerns about fraud. NEW YORK — President Joe Biden met with Vietnamese President To Lam for talks on Wednesday, aiming to deepen relations with the Southeast Asian country and manufacturing hub and counter its ties with China and Russia. Biden and Lam, the ruling Communist Party chief making his first visit to the U.S. as president, met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. On meeting Biden on Wednesday, Lam hailed what he called Biden’s historic contribution to elevating bilateral relations. The Vietnam News Agency reported Lam told Biden that Vietnam was on the brink of a new era of development, and that it was a friend and reliable partner. “Vietnam will continue to firmly implement its foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralism and diversification,” Lam told Biden, the state media agency reported.

I wanted to taste a descendant of those ancient peppers, Peru’s native ají amarillo. Now it was time to learn how this distillation of ají amarillo manifested in local dishes. I felt as if this might be the closest I’d yet come to really tasting ají amarillo, its frank optimism, its essence as a fruit. The ají amarillo sauce was frozen into a shimmery yellow dust that turned to leche de tigre on the plate. Hurricane Helene’s massive wind field was wide enough to stretch from Indianapolis to Washington, DC, and its huge size will result in higher storm surge and dangerous winds that stretch well inland. The storm is already lashing Florida as it continues to intensify and track north toward the Florida’s Big Bend. The hurricane unleashed its fury on parts of Mexico’s Yucátan Peninsula and Cuba Wednesday. Flooding rainfall plunged cars underwater in parts of Mexico’s state of Quintana Roo while powerful ocean waves pounded the coastline. Helene’s strong winds also knocked out power to more than 50,000 people in western Cuba’s province of Pinar del Río.

A hurricane watch and warnings of storm surges up to 15 feet high were issued Tuesday for almost all of Florida's western coastline as a potential tropical storm moves across the Caribbean Sea and towards the Gulf Coast. The hurricane watch extends from Indian Pass in north-west Florida near Panama City, down to Englewood, and includes Tampa Bay. Hurricane and tropical storm watches are now in effect for the entire western coast of the Sunshine State. A hurricane watch means that hurricane conditions are possible, and is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated onslaught of tropical-storm-force winds and conditions. Outside of the U.S., a hurricane watch is also in effect for parts of eastern Mexico from Cabo Catoche to Tulum and Pinar del Río in Cuba.

With little time to prepare, Tampa General Hospital began erecting a 10-foot-high flood barrier around the facility Monday because of the chance for storm surge and shifts in the storm’s track. A tropical storm watch was raised Monday afternoon for Florida’s Dry Tortugas and part of the Keys and Monday evening for Bonita Beach to Flamingo, where a storm surge watch is also in effect. Strong, potentially damaging winds and storm surge are likely near where the system ultimately comes ashore. Hurricane and tropical storm watches are already in effect for parts of Mexico and Cuba. The “storm surge, wind, and rainfall impacts will extend well away from the center, particularly to the east of the system.

A disturbance in the Caribbean Sea is expected to strengthen into a hurricane that will take aim at Florida midweek. A turn toward the northwest is expected Tuesday followed by an acceleration in speed toward the northeast on Wednesday and Thursday, the hurricane center said. A tropical storm is defined as having winds of 39 mph or higher, and a hurricane of 74 mph or higher, according to the National Weather Service. A hurricane watch has been issued for Cabo Catoche in Tulum and for Pinar del Río. A tropical storm warning is in effect in Rio Lagartos in Tulum and Cuba's Artemisa, Pinar del Río and the Isle of Youth, or Isla de la Juventud.
