delivery kits include instructions on reducing the risk of infection for pregnant women who may have to deliver their own babies in a crisis. And as their deliveries approach, many of the pregnant women “don’t know where they’re going to be in the next minute or the next day,” Mr. Allen said. The group said in a statement that women in Gaza have been losing their pregnancies from the stress and shock of the war. Itimad Abu Ward, a midwife and nurse who works as a public health officer for the W.H.O., was among those forced to flee northern Gaza. She said trying to care for pregnant women during the chaotic journey south was near impossible.

HUSAVIK, Iceland (AP) — Iceland’s prime minister and women across the volcanic island nation went on strike Tuesday to push for an end to unequal pay and gender-based violence. Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdóttir said that she would stay home as part of the women's strike — “kvennaverkfal” in Icelandic — and expected other women in her Cabinet would do the same. Iceland's trade unions, the main organizers of the strike, called on women and nonbinary people to refuse both paid and unpaid work, including household chores, for the day. “Foreign women are more vulnerable,” said Alice Clarke, a cloth designer from Canada who has lived in Iceland for 30 years. Acting Equality Minister Irene Montero said Tuesday that the 2018 strike was inspired by Iceland’s 1975 walkout and expressed full support for the latest protest.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man has been found guilty of murdering his wife after a dispute over whether they should appear together on a home-renovation television show. David Tronnes was found guilty of first-degree murder Wednesday for the 2018 death of Shanti Cooper-Tronnes, who prosecutors said was beaten and strangled to death in their Orlando house. Tronnes was sentenced to life in prison immediately after jurors returned the guilty verdict following almost five hours of deliberations. According to prosecutors, Tronnes had spent thousands of dollars on home renovations in hopes of appearing on the A&E reality show “Zombie House Flipping," which is filmed in Orlando. Tronnes claimed he found his wife in the bathtub after spending the day cleaning and walking his dogs.

Rite Aid filed for voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Sunday following slumping sales and a series of lawsuits. Rite Aid, which has over 47,000 employees, has struggled in recent years to compete against larger peers like CVS and Walgreens Boots Alliance, as well as Amazon. Rite Aid has faced growing competition from direct-to-consumer pharmacy startups as well as medication deliveries from the likes of Amazon and Uber. Rite Aid also experienced supply chain challenges after changing supplier for many of its perishable consumer goods and shrink "continued to be a significant headwind," Burr said. Representatives for Rite Aid did not immediately respond for Insider's request for further comment beyond sending statements about Stein's appointment and its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.

CNN —One person has died and eight people have been hospitalized after an outbreak of botulism in a restaurant in the French city of Bordeaux, according to a statement from France’s public health body on Wednesday. It is thought that the diners ate sardines in a home-made oil preserve, which was contaminated with botulism bacteria. They all dined at the Tchin Tchin wine bar from September 4 to September 10, Public Health France said. France’s public health agency has warned anyone who visited the restaurant and has shown any symptoms of botulism to immediately seek medical help. CNN has reached out to the Bordeaux prosecutor and Tchin Tchin wine bar for comment.

The Best Electric Razors for Women for a Smooth Finish

Buyers are increasingly going electric—some because electric shavers lead to far less landfill waste than disposable versions you’d replace daily or weekly. The back of the leg calls for pivoting heads, too, says Dr. Sarkar. “Many electric shavers have Lithium-ion batteries,” notes Dr. Sarkar—so carry-on would be your only option. Epilators, which do remove hair this way, sometimes get misclassified as electric shavers. So if you’re looking for something that will literally uproot your hair, electric shavers aren’t right for the job—but epilators are.

Here are some easy — and inexpensive or no-cost — ways to reduce your carbon footprint today, according to efficiency and environmental experts. As such, the average household saves about $225 in energy costs per year by switching to LED lighting, the Energy Department said. Cut food wasteErlon Silva - Tri Digital | Moment | Getty ImagesThe average American wastes more than 400 pounds of food a year. A washing machine spends 90% of its energy to heat water, for example, the Consumer Federation of America said. Even putting something like a brick in your toilet tank will displace — and therefore save — water.

Russia has lost more than 2,200 main battle tanks since invading Ukraine in February last year. Russian storage depots are deep, but they don't have an unlimited supply of armor to throw into a new fight. In fact, Russia is rebuilding tanks rather than building them, and their capacity to do so may be reaching its limit. Russia has vast stockpiles of old tanks, from T-90s barely 20 years old to rusting T-62s from the 1960s. More importantly, Russia's supply of old tanks for rebuilding is showing signs of running down.

While live-in landlords are far from a novel concept, the pandemic-era fever around passive income and real-estate investing has sparked a rise in the popularity of house hacking. While Turner's initial strategy emphasized small multifamily buildings, some house hackers applied the concept to single-family homes. In 2019, he published a book called "The House Hacking Strategy: How to Use Your Home to Achieve Financial Freedom." With the population in Japan shrinking and Japanese buyers vastly preferring new over used homes, older homes are often abandoned when owners die or younger generations refuse to inherit them. The Japanese government estimated in 2018 that there were nearly 8.5 million abandoned homes in the country. Jaya Thursfield and his wife, Chihiro, moved from London to Japan after buying an abandoned Japanese farmhouse in Ibaraki, a Japanese prefecture about an hour's drive northeast from Tokyo. With many Japanese buyers preferring newly built houses, some homes are demolished after only 20-30 years. And while houses in the US typically appreciate in value, houses in Japan tend to gradually depreciate in value over time.

July 26 (Reuters) - Canada's Imperial Oil (IMO.TO) spilled crude oil into a process-water lagoon at its Mahihkan plant in northern Alberta, contaminating a flock of geese, the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) said on Wednesday. The spill of around six barrels of oil, which took place on Monday, is the latest environmental lapse by the oil sands company. Earlier this year it emerged that toxic tailings water had been seeping for months from Imperial's Kearl mine, and a second separate leak occurred in February. Twelve Canada geese became smeared with oil after landing on the lagoon, the AER said in an incident report on its website. In the last week a dead frog and two dead minnows were found near the seepage site and were collected for additional testing, Imperial said.

The World Health Organization declared Thursday that the artificial sweetener aspartame is “possibly carcinogenic to humans,” adding it to the same risk category as breathing in engine exhaust, working in dry-cleaning and consuming certain pickled vegetables. suggests you’d have to chug quite a bit of diet soda to enter the danger zone. Its new guidance for safe consumption is 40 milligrams of aspartame per kilogram of body weight, meaning that a committed diet-cola fan weighing 150 pounds could drink as many as two dozen cans a day. Still, the news may give the jitters (caffeinated or not) to diet-drink die-hards. If you’re ready to swear off the stuff, or at least moderate your habit, here are 11 aspartame-free alternatives to reach for instead.

More than 13% of passengers on board the Viking Neptune this month fell ill with norovirus, the CDC said. The health agency has already logged 13 outbreaks of the contagious virus on cruise ships this year. The Viking Neptune transformed into a cross-continental petri dish as more than 100 passengers onboard the cruise ship fell ill with the highly contagious norovirus this month. Gastrointestinal illnesses have long been frequent guests aboard cruise ships, where cramped quarters allow germs to spread easily, and the highly contagious norovirus is the most notorious cruise ship culprit. In March, more than 300 people on board a Princess Cruise ship fell ill with the virus, and another outbreak hit 177 people traveling on a Celebrity Cruise ship earlier this month.
