New York CNN —FTX founder and former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried has made a career out of risky bets that, for a while, paid off. Typically, defense attorneys advise their clients not to testify because it leaves them vulnerable to grilling by the prosecution. But at this point, Bankman-Fried doesn’t have much of a choice, legal experts say. Before his world came undone last year, Bankman-Fried was a rising star, even outside the insular world of crypto. It nonetheless helped to propel his star power and secure a $32 billion valuation for FTX.

Still, curators say, he'd likely have never imagined that in 2023, he’d be the first artist of color to have a solo show at the 88-year-old Frick. What is more unusual is that a museum focusing on the 14th through 19th centuries would devote a show to a contemporary portraitist like Hendricks. The only two countries not from Latin America to be included in the 10 most dangerous for environmentalists were the Philippines and Indonesia, Global Witness said.

This was “Soul Train,” the music television series that served as Blackness’ binoculars. In the middle of the Black Power era and feeding from the civil rights movement, “Soul Train” provided a fresh opportunity for Black people to see and celebrate themselves. “We wouldn’t have a house party or at a club where we weren’t doing the ‘Soul Train’ line,” she said. “Those were the fits and the looks and the moves where I think ‘Soul Train’ probably had its biggest influence.”Still, Cochrane, a Gen X-er, says that her era of the “Soul Train” — and the “Soul Train” line — moved with the times. “But it was on ‘Soul Train’ that we got to see our favorite artist, hear our beloved songs, get our style trends and language.

Read Your Way Around the World is a series exploring the globe through books. I was born in Salvador, in the Brazilian state of Bahia, and lived in the general vicinity until I reached the age of 15. I already knew something of Amado, not from reading him but because he was an omnipresent figure in the cultural life of Salvador. Salvador was the first capital of Brazil, founded in 1549 as part of the Portuguese colonial project in the Americas. In the Salvador of yesteryear, one would find Europeans, mostly Portuguese and Dutch, as well as Indigenous peoples, especially the Tupinambá.
