Is New York Prepared for a Bird Flu Pandemic?
  + stars: | 2024-06-25 | by ( Joseph Goldstein | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
Four years after a new coronavirus swept through New York in what was called a once-in-a-century event, public health officials are beginning to prepare for the possibility that a far worse pandemic is on its way. The bird flu virus, H5N1, is not spreading among people. But the city is already preparing as if it could. One New York City hospital system is taking steps to start testing its sewage for the virus, so that it will know if bird flu is silently circulating among patients and staff. But some epidemiologists worry that once again, the public health response in New York will be too sluggish in the early phases, should an epidemic break out in the city.

CNN —The former executive assistant of a tech CEO was found guilty Monday of murdering his boss – whom he then decapitated and dismembered – in 2020, according to a news release from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. A jury on Monday found Haspil guilty of one count of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree grand larceny, one count of second-degree burglary and other charges, according to the DA’s office statement. Haspil became Saleh’s assistant in May 2018, where he was tasked with a variety of responsibilities including handling Saleh’s finances – which is how he gained access to Saleh’s financial records, according to the DA’s office release. That fall, Haspil began stealing from Saleh’s companies using two separate schemes, the DA’s office stated. The next day, Haspil returned to the apartment “to dismember the body and clean up the crime scene,” according to the release.

The project, from veteran filmmakers Alexandra Shiva and Lindsey Megrue, also had help from a Hollywood outsider: Northwell Health, New York's largest healthcare network. Ramon Soto, CMO, Northwell Health. "Lenox Hill" and "Emergency: NYC" followed, drawing on the popular hospital procedural format. Northwell's own research showed people who watched "Emergency: NYC" were 17% more likely to consider using Northwell services compared to those who hadn't seen it. Soto said the company has stuck to talking about mental health and other healthcare issues while avoiding being prescriptive in its messaging.

But the LinkedIn co-founder is dumbfounded by the size of the social media fortune former President Donald Trump is sitting on. Trump’s conservative social media company, Truth Social owner Trump Media & Technology Group, is valued by Wall Street at a whopping $6 billion — even after a recent plunge in its share price. “That is wildly high,” Hoffman, who is now a director at Microsoft and a venture capital investor, told CNN. Based on Monday’s share price, Trump’s 114.75 million shares in Trump Media are valued at nearly $4 billion.

London CNN —At the beginning of the year, Federal Reserve officials projected they would cut interest rates three times this year. The labor-force participation rate has leveled off after a post-Covid boom, and the US immigration policy rate may soon become more restrictive, limiting potential new labor market participants. “Reducing our policy rate too soon or too quickly could result in a rebound in inflation, requiring further future policy rate increases to return inflation to 2% over the longer run.”Investors weren’t happy to hear it. That’s why not taking preemptive action when it’s not necessary is so important.”Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee has also been particularly hawkish in his views. He also said rate hikes are “certainly not off the table.”Like Bowman and Kashkari, New York Fed President John Williams said rate hikes aren’t part of his baseline outlook.

Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump gestures during a campaign event in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S., June 22, 2024. Former President Donald Trump could announce his vice presidential pick as early as this week, possibly ahead of Thursday's debate, according to four people familiar with the situation. That gives him a limited window in which to introduce his running mate to the public. Trump's official spokespeople have regularly tamped down speculation about the timing of an announcement and the identity of Trump's running mate, and they did so again Tuesday. He ignored a follow-up question about whether he has talked with Trump about the VP job this week.

In 2020, the Stanford Internet Observatory, where I was until recently the research director, helped lead a project that studied election rumors and disinformation. As part of that work, we frequently encountered conspiratorial thinking from Americans who had been told the 2020 presidential election was going to be stolen. First, an image or video, such as a photo of a suitcase near a polling place, was posted as evidence of wrongdoing. The poster would tweet the purported evidence, tagging partisan influencers or media accounts with large followings. Partisan media would follow.

Authors of a sweeping new review of research into social media and mental health say there’s still key information missing to know whether prevention programs and interventions will work. In the study, published Monday in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics, researchers reviewed nearly 150 studies on the relationship between social media and the mental health of adolescents. For Murthy, the urgency of the youth mental health crisis is dominant — and there’s enough evidence to act now. “There are certain benefits, but getting some benefits does not justify forcing kids to endure significant harm.”Still, social media is not the same as cigarettes. “To be clear, a warning label would not, on its own, make social media safe for young people,” he wrote.

Shares of Trump Media soared more than 20% on Monday morning, as the firm majority-owned by former President Donald Trump sought to bounce back from a weekslong plunge that cut the stock price nearly in half. Trump Media, which trades as DJT on the Nasdaq, was trading around $33 a share on much higher than average volume as of 10:50 a.m. Shares of Trump Media sunk even lower last week, after its registration of additional shares was declared effective by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Trump posts almost exclusively on Truth Social, the microblogging social media platform that is Trump Media's sole product to date. But Trump in early June joined the social media behemoth TikTok, whose traffic dwarfs that of Truth Social.

Hooters closes dozens of restaurants
  + stars: | 2024-06-24 | by ( Jordan Valinsky | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
New York CNN —Hooters is the latest chain to close dozens of locations across the United States, blaming tough economic challenges including rising food and labor costs. “Like many restaurants under pressure from current market conditions, Hooters has made the difficult decision to close a select number of underperforming stores,” a spokesperson told CNN. In that time prices ticked up 0.2% at limited service spots, which include fast casual and fast food joints. The increases, particularly in fast food prices, have caused customers to pull back on spending and complain online, eroding the sector’s reputation for affordability. It’s not just Hooters feeling the financial brunt from cash-conscious customers: Applebee’s, TGI Fridays, Boston Market, California Pizza Kitchen and bankrupt Red Lobster have all recently closed restaurants.

Among the most fraught questions about this election is the health of the aging candidates themselves. President Biden is 81 and former President Donald Trump is 78; the major presidential parties have never before put forth candidates who are as old. Both men have been seen as showing signs of cognitive decline, leading to calls for greater disclosure about the health of our presidential candidates. It is natural to assume that physicians might have a better understanding than other voters of how healthy either Mr. Trump or Mr. Biden is. But they are even more pressing today, as social media amplifies questions about the health and fitness of public officials.

Now Israel’s champions, many of whom have never been comfortable with Bowman, are striking back, capitalizing on a political environment transformed by Oct. 7. Bowman’s challenger is the Westchester County executive, George Latimer, who refuses to criticize Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, putting Latimer not just to Bowman’s right but also to the right of President Biden and Senator Chuck Schumer, the majority leader. I think Sanders was exaggerating, but the contest is probably the most important congressional primary this year. It’s setting a precedent for big money interference in local politics and tearing at the longtime progressive alliance between Black people and Jews. There is something deeply admirable about his refusal to subordinate his values to political expediency.

This is Street Wars, a weekly series on the battle for space on New York’s streets and sidewalks. Jimmy Cho could ride a wheelchair, but wheelchairs are slow. He could also ride a standup scooter, but he prefers to sit. Thus he combined the front half of an electric scooter (handlebars, front wheel, motor, battery pack) to an old wheelchair (padded seat, handrails, nothing special). But because it’s zippy, he can keep pace with traffic on busy Manhattan avenues.

Just days after the body of Fahim Saleh, a successful tech entrepreneur, was found dismembered in his luxury condomiumium in Manhattan in July 2020, his former personal assistant, Tyrese Haspil, made a series of unsettling web searches. “Fahim Saleh.” “Murder of tech C.E.O. in New York.” “Dismembered body.”The search queries were just some of the chilling details that emerged during Mr. Haspil’s murder trial this month in Manhattan Criminal Court. And on Monday jurors convicted him of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from Mr. Saleh — and then killing him and cutting up his body in an effort to conceal what he had done. Mr. Haspil, 25, of Brookyn, is expected to be sentenced on Sept. 10.
