Ashkelon, Israel CNN —Souad Al-Alem was one of the roughly 10,000 people forced to flee the Palestinian town of al-Majdal. It was 1948, she was a young woman and Israel’s troops were approaching the community during the Arab-Israeli war in what is now part of the Israeli city of Ashkelon. Now in her 90s and living in Gaza, Al-Alem has been forced to run again. All of its houses are long gone, replaced with modern Israeli buildings that are now part of Ashkelon. Of the six sites of former villages visited by CNN earlier this week, none had any information about Palestinian villages on display.

Israeli airstrikes on Gaza have killed a dozen UN aid workers, a spokesperson told Insider. The dead, who were all Palestinians, included five teachers, a gynecologist, a psychologist, and support staff, she said. "I want people to know that there are civilians — really civilians — who are being killed in Gaza," Touma said. It runs a network of medical facilities in Gaza, as well as schools that are now serving as shelters for nearly 220,000 Palestinian civilians. Local authorities say 1,417 people have been killed in the Israeli response, with another 6,200 wounded.

"You can have strong bilateral relations with Israel and be a strong supporter of the agency," Lazzarini told Reuters. "Whatever rapprochement or ties (with Israel) should not have the slightest impact on your commitment and your solidarity with the Palestine refugees and your support to an agency like UNRWA. "We have normal access when it comes to delivering our services in Gaza and the West Bank, but we are very concerned about the increased violence impacting this community," he said. Last year saw the worst levels of violence in the West Bank in more than a decade after Israel launched a crackdown on militants in response to fatal Palestinian street attacks.
